Native American Film Series - 2011-2012 Season

Put it on your calendars!!!!!

Where Condor Meets Eagle: Indigenous Bolivian and Native American Film Festival and Cultural Exchange is a three-night film festival celebrating Indigenous film, collaborations across national boundaries, and visual storytelling. Come see world class films from Bolivia, Canada, and Minnesota and meet some of the filmmakers, engage in conversation, and enjoy three great evenings for free. Filmmakers from Bolivia will be present, all films in Spanish will be translated, and lovers of film are welcome.

Fulbright Information Session

Each year, approximately 1,500 Americans traveling more than 130 countries receive support from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Program participants pursue graduate or professional study, advanced research or English teaching in elementary and secondary schools or universities.

Come to this information session to learn more about the program and its application process as well as hear from former Augsburg students who have received Fulbright program fellowships.

Apply to be an Interfaith Scholar

The Interfaith Scholars are a group of students who are interested in exploring the religious diversity of the Augsburg student body, the wider Twin Cities community, and the United States through inter-religious dialogue and action. These students earn 1.0 upper division credit in the Religion Department (REL 407/408), and receive a $1,000 scholarship.

This group meets twice monthly for an academic seminar and for interfaith service learning projects. We invite religious believers from a variety of traditions as well as the non-religious to apply in order to converse respectfully with others about what one believes, why it matters and how it propels us to service in the world.

Who is eligible?
- Current students who have completed Religion 100, have an interest in interfaith dialogue, and would be able to participate the entire 2012-2013 academic year.

Spanish Conversation this Thursday

Are you looking for a place to practice your Spanish? We've got just the thing for you - Spanish conversation group! All language levels are welcome to join us for laughs and interesting conversation as we practice speaking in a relaxed and friendly setting. We meet every Thursday from 11:00-1:00 in the Riverside Room, 2nd fl. of the Christensen Center. Signs will be posted. Drop in at any time and stay for as long as you like. Scholastic Connections Applications Due March 1

ATTENTION UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF COLOR:
Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color who serves as mentor for the Scholar.

Six "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2012-13.

Eligibility criteria:
• Current Augsburg student or advanced standing transfer student
• Demonstrated financial need
• Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
• Demonstrated community involvement (on or off campus)
• GPA of 2.5 or higher

Application Process:
• Applicants must complete the following:
• Scholastic Connections Application (due 3/1)
• One letter of recommendation from someone other than a family member (due 3/1)
• A completed financial aid file (due 3/1 in the Enrollment Center)
• An application interview with Cindy Peterson (completion deadline 3/15)


APPLICATION DEADLINE IS 3/1.

The 2012 Called to Lead Workshop

Called to Lead, 2012: An Invitation for You

If you are wondering where you are going in your professional and personal life and feel that you could be doing something more significant, we invite you to explore "Called to Lead," a four week intensive experience for Augsburg graduate students, alumni, staff, and friends of the college. Together we shall explore the challenges of leadership, the nature of servant leadership, the centered life, the myth of a balanced life, seeing things whole, and development of your own strategic game plan.
Spend four spring mornings (April 17, April 24, May 1, and May 8) with us (7:30 am-9:00 am) before work and emerge energized and renewed for new challenges in your life.

Facilitators include Professors Tom Morgan, Jack Fortin, and Norma Noonan. The workshop is co-sponsored by the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning and the Augsburg Center for Leadership Studies.

Photo Exhibit Features Ethiopian Women

Enjoy the photography of Oromo women from Ethiopia, presented by Tsehai Wodajo, Augsburg graduate and founder of Resources of the Enrichment of African Lives (REAL). The event is co-sponsored by the Women's Resource Center.

"I'm eager for more people to learn about the challenges faced by Ethiopian women, and to be inspired by how these women pass along hope and perseverance to the next generation," said Ms. Wodajo.

Wodajo, who also is a senior social worker for Hennepin County, will share her personal story, and speak about her work. Her story also is intended to help promote education of girls in Ethiopia. She will be joined by other presenters who will talk about the history and culture of the Oromo people with a focus on the role of women in shaping their culture. Other presenters include Peri Klemm, associate professor of art history from California State University at Northridge, and Martha Kuwee Kumsa, associate professor of social work from Wilfred Laurier University.

The exhibit is open from 1-4 PM, February 25-26th in Foss Center; the cultural presentations will occur from 2-3 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium on both days.

Going Away Party for Eric Addington

Tonight from 7 to 9 pm there will be a FREE COOKING CLASS in the Christensen Center Cafeteria! Come and learn how to make a new dish, take some dinner home, and have a good time! The food will be used to feed folks in the Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood (more specifically at the Brian Coyle Center).

Micheale Tesema Awarded 2012 MnTRIO Scholarship

Micheale Tesema '14 has been selected to receive one of three competitive scholarships sponsored by Minnesota TRIO, the state professional organization of TRIO staff. The Paul and Sheila Wellstone Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of the late senator and his wife by supporting a deserving college student who maintains a high GPA, demonstrates the ability to set and achieve goals, and who actively participates in and uses TRIO support. Twenty-seven TRIO programs nominated their top students to receive this scholarship, and Micheale was selected for his essay reflecting his academic acumen and resiliency, combined with a stellar nomination letter from his TRIO Advisor, Melody Martagon-Geiger. Micheale will speak about his educational journey and accept his award at the 2012 Minnesota TRIO Day Student Leadership Conference, held at Lake Superior College in Duluth this Saturday, February 25.

Auggies Host Playoff Game TONIGHT

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Augsburg College men's basketball team has received the No. 4 seed in the MIAC playoffs and will be hosting St. John's University in a quarterfinal game TONIGHT (Wednesday 2/22) at 7:30 p.m. at Si Melby Hall.

The Auggies finished the regular season with a 16-9 overall (13-7 MIAC) record and will be taking on the Johnnies (15-10 overall, 11-9 MIAC). The Auggies swept St. John's during the regular season, winning 60-45 (11/30) and 65-49 (1/18).

Because it is a MIAC postseason event, ALL individuals must pay for admission, including Augsburg students, faculty and staff. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for students (all children under 18 and college students with ID). There will be no pre-sale of tickets for the game. Doors will open and tickets will be available at 6 p.m. tonight.

The first 300 Augsburg students will be admitted free to the game, courtesy of the Augsburg athletic department. The first 300 Augsburg students MUST show their Augsburg student ID at the door in order to gain free admission.

Augsburg head coach Aaron Griess and his team members are encouraging all Auggie fans to wear WHITE for an Auggie White-Out in the Si Melby Hall bleachers! Show your Auggie Pride and wear white tonight for the game!

Tonight's game will also be webcast live with live statistics on Augsburg's GameCentral portal.
