CTL Grant Application Due Dates

Faculty Summer Scholarship Grant Applications due March 15
Two Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants ($4000) and two Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants ($2000) are available to support faculty summer scholarship activities. Applications should be submitted electronically no later than March 15. For more information and to receive an application form, contact Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu.)

Instructional & Course Design Grant Proposals due March 15
Up to eight Instructional and Course Design Grants ($3000 each) are available to support faculty summer course design activities, using L. Dee Fink's Creating Significant Learning Experiences and D. Randy Garrison & Norman D. Vaughan's Blended Learning in Higher Education. The purpose of these grants is to support the development of instructional design skills, as well as their application to a specific course. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire serve as consultants for grant recipients. Applications are due no later than March 15. Blended Learning Series

Blended learning has come to mean everything from web-enhanced face-to-face learning to, but not including, courses that are fully online. Integrating online technologies can enhance and enrich learning; online tools also help differentiate instruction. A recent meta-analysis reported by the U.S. Department of Education found that blended learning produced higher performance on learning outcomes than either online or face-to-face learning.

The Blended Learning Series, co-sponsored by IT, is offered from 8:30-10:00 on Third Wednesdays in Lindell 202, and includes the following remaining spring workshop:

The Jessica Nathanson Scholarly Writing Retreat

The third annual Scholarly Writing Retreat will be held at Dunrovin Retreat Center near Marine on St. Croix from 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 29 to 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 31. Initiated by Jessica Nathanson, the retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Some come to plan an approach to a new project to be completed over the summer; others use it as an opportunity to finish articles they have been working on during the year. Those interested in participating should contact Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu). Registrants are accepted on a first come-first serve basis.

Creating an Inclusive Campus – Call for Proposals

This three-day annual conference will be held May 22-24 and is designed to feature key developments in fulfilling our commitment to intentional diversity and global learning at Augsburg College. It includes an opening session focused on one aspect of creating an engaged, inclusive learning community, and concurrent session tracks devoted to:

Engaging all students – These sessions explore student differences and what we can do to ensure that all students feel included and receive the support they need to be successful.
Embedding diversity and global learning in the curriculum – These sessions examine what departments are doing to address diversity and global learning in their courses and programs.
Developing our community – This track focuses on faculty, staff, and administrator skills and practices, and what we can do to ensure inclusiveness across the campus.

The third day consists of half-day workshops for faculty and staff to focus on setting departmental goals and action plans for creating inclusiveness. The conference is co-sponsored by CTL, the Office of International Programs, Human Resources, Student Affairs, and General Education.

We invite you to submit a proposal for a 90-minute session related to any of the 3 tracks. Please provide a title and list of presenters, along with a 150-200 word description of the session you would like to facilitate. Submit your proposal to Velma Lashbrook (lashbroo@augsburg.edu) by April 1.

Scholastic Connections Application Deadline 3/1

ATTENTION UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF COLOR:
Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color who serves as mentor for the Scholar.

Six "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2012-13.

Eligibility criteria:
• Current Augsburg student or advanced standing transfer student
• Demonstrated financial need
• Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
• Demonstrated community involvement (on or off campus)
• GPA of 2.5 or higher

Application Process:
• Applicants must complete the following:
• Scholastic Connections Application (due 3/1)
• One letter of recommendation from someone other than a family member (due 3/1)
• A completed financial aid file – a completed FAFSA (due 3/1 in the Enrollment Center)
• An application interview with Cindy Peterson (completion deadline 3/15) – instructions to follow receipt of application

TODAY ...Mindfully Eat AfroDeli food 6pm OGC 100

Calling all Students...Come experience a new way to eat--Mindful Eating...in honor of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week! This event will involve a free catered buffet from AfroDeli and be lead by local meditation student--Alex Haley. Alex has been studying meditation for almost 20 years! He will guide us through a mindful eating experience that first involves becoming aware of the moment and letting go of any distractions. Then we'll chew slowly, stop talking, and tune in to the wonders of AfroDeli...you don't want to miss this! Come by 6pm, and we'll promptly begin at 6:05 with basic explanation of mindful eating. Then for about 30 minutes, we'll experience 3 guided mindful eating exercises that will end before 7pm, so we'll have time for questions.

Co-sponsored by the Augsburg Mindfulness Club and the Center for Counseling & Health Promotion.

"Beauty Mark" Film and Discussion, Wednesday Night

Come join us tomorrow night to watch and discuss "Beauty Mark." Created by a former world class tri-athlete, this film explores our culture's beauty and body standards and the price men and women pay to try to reach them, by telling her own story and interviewing others—from inner-city teenagers to models to body-builders to champion athletes.

The film will be followed by a discussion and q & a with Carlin Anderson, PhD, LP. Dr. Anderson is the sports psychologist for the athletics department at the University of Minnesota, and has extensive eating disorders expertise as well.

3rd Annual Student Leadership Institute

Thanks to Campus Activities and Orientation hosted the 3rd Annual Student Leadership Institute on Saturday, February 25. 100 student-leaders attended the institute, including Orientation Leaders, AugSem Leaders, Student Organization representatives, as well as several interested students. Dr. Heather Hackman presented on Everyday Anti-Racism: Developing Awareness, Skills and Action in the Service of a Socially Just Society. The four hour training was very well-received with several students staying after to speak one-on-one with Dr. Hackman. While the evaluations are still being recorded, the overwhelming response has been extremely positive.

Auggie Math at Konhauser ProblemFest XX

On Saturday, February 25, 3 teams of Augsburg students traveled to Macalester College to participate in the 20th Konhauser Problemfest, a team mathematics competition of regional colleges. The 3 teams of 3 students each - the most ever that Augsburg has sent to the competition - vanquished challenging mathematical problems on the 3-hour, 10 question exam. The team participants were Carl Benson, Will Gubash, Joe Rossetter, Ryan Mulcahy, Megan Sutherland, Jasmine Zand, HeeChan Kang, Kaleb Saindon, and Austin Wagner.
