Powerful Conversations on NSSE
Student-Faculty Interaction
This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions. The remaining sessions are scheduled as follows:

Speaking of Scholarship Series

The Speaking of Scholarship Series features the scholarship of Augsburg faculty and students, through 20-30 minute presentations followed by informal conversations about the issues raised by their work. Scholarly Writing Retreat
Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011
The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.
Comments from last year's attendees:
"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."
The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Applications Due March 14
Purpose
The purpose of the Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.
Description and Eligibility
Two $4,000 Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply. Faculty who receive a Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course during the summer.
Two $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.
Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project, including a summary of work already accomplished and a timetable and plan for completion. Explain how receipt of the Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion. Please attach a curriculum vitae along with any directly relevant supporting materials. Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2011 and a short final report by Feb. 1, 2012.
Submit applications as email attachments no later than March 14, 2011 to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu)in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April.

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths
This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

Call for Proposals – Instructional & Course Design
Instructional and Course Design Grants
Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14
Purpose
The purpose of CTL’s Instructional and Course Design (ICD) Grant is to support the design or redesign of courses in undergraduate or graduate programs, and to enhance the instructional design capabilities of Augsburg faculty. The expectation is that the grant will make it possible for faculty to devote the time necessary (at least a full-month equivalent) to create a meaningful design or redesign of an Augsburg course.
Description and Eligibility
Six $4000 grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to projects which will impact a significant number of students or are central to the effectiveness of a program, and to faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years. Faculty who receive this grant are not permitted to teach more than one course during the summer.
Grant recipients are expected to complete readings related to designing significant learning experiences in face-to-face and online contexts, participate in a one-day orientation and training session and on the Moodle resource site, meet with a consultant at least twice over the summer, and share their syllabi at the end of the summer and their assessment and reflection on the course after it is implemented. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire will serve as ICD consultants for 2011-2012.
Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu), including: the course number and title, a profile of the students expected to take the course, a rationale for the course design/redesign and for the development of your design skills, project objectives, and a timetable and plan for completion. Grant recipients are expected to submit the syllabus for the new or revised course by September 1, 2011 and a short final report, including an assessment and reflection on the course implementation by May 15, 2012.
Call for Proposals – International Travel Grants
Applications Due March 30
Purpose
The purpose of travel grants is to support faculty involvement in professional associations and to support collaboration with our international programs and partners. The expectation is that faculty will share their scholarship activities, remain current on the scholarship work in their professions, and develop relationships with others in their profession and in the Augsburg international network.
Description and Eligibility
In addition to the standard professional travel grants, there are two competitive awards for international travel:
International professional travel – Two grants of up to $2000 are awarded to full-time faculty for international travel to present at a professional conference.
The Dean’s Internationalization Summer Travel Grant - Two grants of up to $2500 are awarded to faculty or staff for international travel to support teaching, scholarship, or service collaboration with Augsburg International Programs or Partner Institutions that facilitates internationalizing the Augsburg campus and curriculum.
Application Process
Submit proposals for international conference travel using the online Faculty and Staff Professional Travel application on the CTL website. Applications for international conference travel are due March 30, 2011 for travel in 2011-12 (June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012); these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Math Colloquium this Wednesday—Nancy Steblay
Announcing a colloquium be Professor Nancy Steblay of the Department of Psychology.
Professor Steblay will present a colloquium talk on Wednesday, February 23 in OGC 113, 3:40-4:40 p.m. The title of the talk is "From lab to the field: Eyewitness memory research." Here is the abstract for the talk.
"Most broadly, my research is about human memory and decision-making. My work applies psychological methods and knowledge to understand decision processes that are central to law and the legal system.
My primary line of research addresses eyewitness memory, specifically witness identification decisions stemming from police lineups. It has become glaringly apparent that real witnesses may point to someone in a lineup, and say "that's him" with great confidence - and yet be dead wrong. The goal of the research is to understand the reasons for eyewitness error and to figure out revisions to eyewitness evidence collection procedures (police lineups) that can reduce the likelihood of error. My research includes both laboratory and field experiments."

Oral presentations, literary readings, music performances, art showing, etc. April 13-14, 2011
Students can participate in "Z" via:
-The poster session on Wednesday, April 13 (3:00-5:00). URGO/LSAMP/McNair pay for poster printing costs.
-An alternative format for presenting their work. For example, this could be a musical performance, a literary reading, art showing, or an oral presentation.

Through the on line registration you may sign up for bus transportation from Minneapolis and Rochester to Luther College, admission to all sessions, meals, and lodging.
The bus will load at Augsburg (Minneapolis)1:45 pm and at Augsburg (Rochester) at 3:30 pm on Friday and return at approximately 6 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturday. Day students will be housed with Luther College students in residence halls. WEC and grad students have the option of staying with Luther students in a residence hall or staying in a motel at their own expense. Faculty and staff will stay in a motel at their own expense. Make Bowls for Augsburg's Empty Bowls Event
Augsburg is holding its first Empty Bowls event this fall, and we need you to help make bowls for the event! The Augsburg community will make 250 bowls in the ceramics studio (located in Old Main) and donate them for the event. At the event, community members will come and buy the bowls, fill them up with soup made by Campus Kitchens, and sit down and eat with their neighbors. The money made from selling the bowls will be donated to the Brian Coyle Food Shelf.
The first studio session will be Saturday, February 26th from 12-3.
If you know how to use a pottery wheel and are interested in helping out, please contact Nora Helf at nora.helf@gmail.com. We'd like to have an estimate of how many people plan on attending this session so we can know if we have enough wheels available.
America the Beautiful - A Documentary
Join CCHP staff and Jessica Nathanson as well as a representative from the Emily Program on Wednesday 2/23/11 in the Women's Resource Center from 12:30 - 2:30 pm for a brown bag lunch and conversation and viewing of the documentary "America the Beautiful".
The documentary is about the media's obsession with body image and the need for perfection in advertising. If you cannot attend the entire time, feel free to come as long as you are able to join us.
