Call for Proposals – Summer Scholarship Grants

Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and
Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants
Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Description and Eligibility
Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply. Faculty who receive a Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course during the summer.

Two $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project, including a summary of work already accomplished and a timetable and plan for completion. Explain how receipt of the Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion. Please attach a curriculum vitae along with any directly relevant supporting materials. Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2011 and a short final report by Feb. 1, 2012.

Submit applications as email attachments no later than March 14, 2011 to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu)in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April.

Speaking of Scholarship Series

The Speaking of Scholarship Series features the scholarship of Augsburg faculty and students, through 20-30 minute presentations followed by informal conversations about the issues raised by their work. Staff Development Series

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

Zyzzogeton Registration and Information

Please help us in locating students who have done research or creative activity of high quality. Our annual celebration of student scholarship and creative activity, Zyzzogeton (or "Z") sponsored by LSAMP, McNair & URGO*, is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14.

Poster Session: April 13, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Oral presentations, literary readings, music performances, art showing, etc. April 13-14, 2011

Students can participate in "Z" via:
-The poster session on Wednesday, April 13 (3:00-5:00). URGO/LSAMP/McNair pay for poster printing costs.
-An alternative format for presenting their work. For example, this could be a musical performance, a literary reading, art showing, or an oral presentation.

What you need to know:

Call for Proposals – Instructional & Course Design

Instructional and Course Design Grants
Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of CTL's Instructional and Course Design (ICD) Grant is to support the design or redesign of courses in undergraduate or graduate programs, and to enhance the instructional design capabilities of Augsburg faculty. The expectation is that the grant will make it possible for faculty to devote the time necessary (at least a full-month equivalent) to create a meaningful design or redesign of an Augsburg course.

Description and Eligibility
Six $4000 grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to projects which will impact a significant number of students or are central to the effectiveness of a program, and to faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years. Faculty who receive this grant are not permitted to teach more than one course during the summer.

Grant recipients are expected to complete readings related to designing significant learning experiences in face-to-face and online contexts, participate in a one-day orientation and training session and on the Moodle resource site, meet with a consultant at least twice over the summer, and share their syllabi at the end of the summer and their assessment and reflection on the course after it is implemented. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire will serve as ICD consultants for 2011-2012.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu), including: the course number and title, a profile of the students expected to take the course, a rationale for the course design/redesign and for the development of your design skills, project objectives, and a timetable and plan for completion. Grant recipients are expected to submit the syllabus for the new or revised course by September 1, 2011 and a short final report, including an assessment and reflection on the course implementation by May 15, 2012.

Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Call for Proposals – International Travel Grants

Applications Due March 30

Purpose
The purpose of travel grants is to support faculty involvement in professional associations and to support collaboration with our international programs and partners. The expectation is that faculty will share their scholarship activities, remain current on the scholarship work in their professions, and develop relationships with others in their profession and in the Augsburg international network.

Description and Eligibility
In addition to the standard professional travel grants, there are two competitive awards for international travel:
International professional travel – Two grants of up to $2000 are awarded to full-time faculty for international travel to present at a professional conference.
The Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant - Two grants of up to $2500 are awarded to faculty or staff for international travel to support teaching, scholarship, or service collaboration with Augsburg International Programs or Partner Institutions that facilitates internationalizing the Augsburg campus and curriculum.

Application Process
Submit proposals for international conference travel using the online Faculty and Staff Professional Travel application on the CTL website. Applications for international conference travel are due March 30, 2011 for travel in 2011-12 (June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012); these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Submit proposals for the Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant using the online Group and Individual Project form on the CTL website. Applications are due March 30, 2011 for travel during Summer 2011; these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Belle Reprieve Tickets on Sale Now

Tickets are on sale now for Augsburg Theatre department's production of Belle Reprieve written by Bette Bourne, Paul Shaw, Peggy Shaw, and Lois Weaver, directed by David Deblieck.
The show, created in collaboration by the members of two queer performance companies, Belle Reprieve is a cross-dressing, farcical romp that re-visions Tennessee Williams' characters from A Streetcar Named Desire: Mitch (a fairy disguised as a man), Stella (A woman disguised as a woman), Stanley (a butch lesbian) and Blanche (a man in a dress). Using the famous film version of the play as a launch pad and cabaret music as a theatrical mouthpiece, the play examines sexual politics and gender performance in American life and theatre!

March 8, 9, 10, and 11 at 7:00pm

Unique Youth Ministry Opportunity

Looking for a short-term summer youth ministry job opportunity?

We are seeking five current Augsburg students to serve as mentors for the Augsburg College Youth Theology Institute (ACYTI). http://www.augsburg.edu/acyti/

ACYTI brings together high school leaders for an intense week of friendship, classroom learning, worship, solitude, contemplation, discernment, and action on Augsburg's urban campus. Participants learn together, pray together, play together, explore the city together, and discern God's work in our world together.

Mentors need to be available for some training in April and be able to work the entire week of June 25-July 1. A position overview is available in the Campus Ministry Office, or by emailing fieldl@augsburg.edu

Augsburg Native American Film Series

Club Native is a candid and deeply moving look at the pain, confusion and frustration suffered by many First Nations people as they struggle for the most important right of all: the right to belong.

On the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake, located just outside the city of Montreal, Canada, there are two firm but unspoken rules drummed into every member of the community: Do not marry a white person and do not have a child with a white person. The potential consequences of ignoring these rules-loss of membership on the reserve, for yourself and your child-are clear, and for those who incur them, devastating. Break the rules, and you also risk being perceived as having betrayed the Mohawk Nation by diluting the "purity" of the bloodline.

In Club Native, filmmaker Tracey Deer uses Kahnawake, her hometown, as a lens to probe deeply into the history and contemporary reality of Aboriginal identity. Following the stories of four women, she reveals the exclusionary attitudes that divide the community and many others like it across Canada. Deer traces the roots of the problem, from the advent of the highly discriminatory Indian Act through the controversy of Bill C31, up to the present day, where membership on the reserve is determined by a council of Mohawk elders, whose rulings often appear inconsistent. And with her own home as a poignant case study, she raises a difficult question faced by people of many ethnicities across the world: What roles do bloodline and culture play in determining identity?
Tracey Deer, Director

Mohawk filmmaker Tracey Deer is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of Canada's finest chroniclers of modern Aboriginal life. She co-directed the feature-length documentary One More River (Rezolution Pictures) about the 2003 agreement between the Cree and Quebec. In 2004, she made Mohawk Girls (Rezolution Pictures/The National Film Board of Canada), a moving portrait of three teenage girls coming of age on her home reserve of Kahnawake, just outside of Montreal.

Tracey graduated in film studies at Dartmouth College in 2000 where she shot, directed and edited three short films before receiving the 25th Anniversary Film and Television Award for overall achievement in film studies. Her films have been broadcast and screened across Canada.

Seeking Justice Where We Live: Batalden Convo

On March 11 & 12 the campus and local community will engage in a series of "conversations for a new commons" on the theme of "Seeking Justice Where we Live" as part of the 2011 Batalden Symposium on Applied Ethics. The events on Friday March 12 will center on issues of civil rights and social justice, starting with a convocation from 10-11 with Luther Seminary's Chris Scharen and the Somali Justice Advocacy Center's Dahir Jibreel. The focus on Saturday, March 12 will be on economic sustainability and green jobs, with keynote speaker Hussein Samatar of the African Development Center. The full schedule of events is listed below. Faculty teaching during these times are encouraged to bring their class to the workshops and convocations.

Economic sustainability and our common work: Somali Justice Advocacy Center and African Development Center meeting with students for a discussion of research and internship opportunities with local "green jobs" including alternative energy, energy conservation, local "eco-tourism," etc.

Nominations are currently being accepted for the 12th annual Augsburg Leadership Awards taking place on Monday, April 11. Any student, staff, faculty, or community member may nominate a fellow student leader, student group, or student group advisor for these awards; self-nominations are also accepted. Nomination packets are due no later than 4:30pm on Friday, March 25.
