Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Sanity Management Training

SANITY MANAGEMENT: Understanding and dealing with causes of stress in the workplace

This workshop will help participants understand the stages of stress and why it is a problem. In addition, participants will learn the four most serious causes affecting sanity in the workplace, including the common causes of job aggravation and adaptive and maladaptive behaviors. We will review "sanity life savers" which will help control stress at home and work and overcome frustration, conflict and pressure barriers.

At the completion of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of the causes of stress and ways to better cope and increase their emotional IQ. This training will be taught on-site here at Augsburg by an Instructor from TruSight, formerly Employers Association.

Two Sessions Available. Open to all Augsburg employees. The same session will be presented twice, please register for only ONE session.

Staff Development Series begins February 15

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

The first session will focus on discovering and developing your strengths. In preparation, you will need to pick up a copy of Strengths Based Leadership from Sarah Hedstrom in the CTL area, and complete an online inventory. Please bring your results to the session.

The Augsburg College Writing Lab has added additional hours this trimester/semester. Remember to use this resource now, relatively early in the term, while there is still time to work carefully on papers and revisions. The lab is located on the street level of Lindell Library, just to the left of the circulation desk. Nominate a colleague for a Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Award!

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.

Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:
• Nomination Form
• At least TWO letters of recommendation

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.

Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

This will be the fourth year for the Augsburg Community Garden. The garden is composed of nearly 100 small plots that are managed by students, staff, faculty, neighbors, and community organizations like the People's Clinic, Brian Coyle, Trinity, and East African Womens' Center to name a few. There is a limited number of plots and we expect them to go fast this year, so if you're interested, please let us know right away. Phi Alpha Theta Intl. History Honor Society

Join the Phi Alpha Theta International History Honor Society (Alpha Mu Lambda Chapter)!

Established in 1921 at the University of Arkansas, Phi Alpha Theta's stated mission is to "promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. It seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways." Over 9,000 undergraduates around the country join the society each year.

Initiates need to have completed at least four history courses (they need not be history majors), hold a GPA of 3.1 or better in history, and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall. After paying a small, one-time initiation fee, students become lifetime members of the society.

Be a Residential Peer Mentor for TRiO/SSS Students

Do you want to have fun and make a difference for new first-year students this summer? Augsburg TRiO/Student Support Services (TRiO/SSS) is now accepting applications for the position of Summer Bridge 2011 Residential Peer Mentor (RPM).

TRiO/SSS Summer Bridge selects 25 first-year TRiO students to get a head start on their Augsburg education. During this five-week residential program, students take two college courses for credit, and attend academic support seminars, workshops, and other activities to help provide for a smooth transition to Augsburg in the fall. Summer Bridge participants also participate in TRiO/SSS for the rest of their enrollment at Augsburg.

Augsburg TRiO/SSS started in 2001 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg College. TRiO/SSS annually provides individual and group services to 160 students so that they develop the skills and motivation necessary to achieve a bachelor's degree.

RPMs will support the efforts of the TRiO/SSS program to provide a quality summer residential and academic experience for program participants that meet the goals established in the TRiO/SSS federal grant. The role in the residence hall is to facilitate and introduce incoming TRiO/SSS students to a healthy living experience. The RPM is not a 24-hour police officer, but a 24-hour role model–authoritative without being authoritarian.

There are four openings (2 male, 2 female) for this live-in position. This position may be considered an internship for transcript notation or academic credit. The RPM position is full-time, with variable hours from July 10 - August 11, 2011, and with additional training dates in May or June, and July.

Live in the Oren Gateway Center

The Oren Gateway Center is Augsburg's newest residential facility and is a substance free environment. In order to live in this space for the 2011-2012 academic year, students must obtain an application by e-mailing Cyndy Rowe, Housing Specialist for the Department of Residence Life, at rowe@augsburg.edu. Summer Course Information

Grad students/Day/WEC/Rochester undergrad students: registration for summer school terms will begin on Monday, 18 April for all classes. These courses are now visible online through AugNet Records and Registration for planning purposes as you register for Spring WEC

PA and MBA students: your summer courses are located in Summer Session III on AugNet Records and Registration.

Please remember that the maximum credit load in Summer Sessions I & II is 2.0 credits. Students registered in Spring WEC and Summer Session I will be allowed a maximum of 2.0 credits between the programs. However, students with a Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, may increase the crossover load to 3.0 credits. Students exceeding these limits will be removed from the overload courses.

These same conditions apply to SS I and II and Summer Online I and II courses. Summer online courses are located in Summer Session I and Summer Session II in AugNet Records and Registration and have a section letter of "L" for Minneapolis students and "RL" for Rochester students.

Please note there is an administrative drop fee of $100 if you register for a course and then drop it latter.

Fleece Donations Wanted for Homeless Families

Please help support Augsburg's Special Education Department, along with students involved with Public Achievement at Fridley Middle School, by donating fleece fabric material that will be used to create blankets by the students. Monetary donations are also welcome to go towards the purchase of fleece material from fabric shops. The blankets will then be donated to homeless families in the area. Donations can be dropped off in Sverdrup Hall's lower level Education Department office suite until February 26, 2011. Thanks!

Handling Student Reports of Sexual Assault

Do you know what to do if a student reports that s/he has been sexually assaulted? Come to the WRC Brown Bag Lunch on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at noon to find out. John Pack and Ann Garvey will go over the reporting procedure and discuss what resources are available for students who have been sexually assaulted.

Active Minds Meeting this Wed -- Note New Location

Active Minds is an award-winning, national student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy group. Students who participate in Active Minds work to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses by promoting open, enlightened discussion, increasing student awareness of mental health issues, and providing information and resources. Active Minds has 300+ chapters on college campuses nationwide.

Students are invited to come to an interest meeting sponsored by the Center for Counseling & Health Promotion to learn how to start a chapter on our campus. Prize Winning Author WD Wetherell on Campus Feb. 22-26

W.D. Wetherell will visit Augsburg during the last week in February as the ACTC Visiting Writer. He will visit classes and meet with writers in Augsburg's creative writing program.

He will give a public reading on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Augsburg College Barnes and Noble bookstore, with refreshments and book signing after the reading. The event is open to the public.

W. D. Wetherell lives in the hills of rural New Hampshire. He is the author of 19 books, including novels Chekhov's Sister and A Century of November, currently being developed into a film. His most recent short fiction collection is Hills Like White Hills. He has won three O'Henry Awards, the Drue Heinz Literature Prize, two NEA fellowships, the National Magazine Award for Fiction, and the Strauss Living Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Wetherell's essays appear in The New York Times. He often writes about fly-fishing. His newest non-fiction book is On Admiration: Heroes, Heroines, Role Models and Mentors.

Open Forum: Conversation about Telling Our Story

Augsburg College is in the final rounds of interviewing for the open Media Relations Director position. We had an amazing response to the job posting and the opportunity to talk with many very qualified candidates to get to this point.

We now are inviting the two final candidates back to campus to participate in an open forum discussion about telling our story. The format is intended to be a conversation, rather than a presentation or interview, and will kick off with the candidate sharing some thoughts about telling an institutional story in today's world of real-time news and social media. The remainder of the time, then, will be dedicated to an open conversation about the topic.

Two sessions are scheduled this week:
Tuesday, Feb. 15, 10 to 11 a.m., OGC 100
Thursday, Feb. 17, 2 to 3 p.m., The Augsburg Room

Haff has more than 20 years experience working with people who are homeless and decades of involvement in various arts activities. She worked at St. Stephen's Shelter and the Wesley Meals Program for several years and also founded Glenda Ministry. Her goal is to serve and support the whole person who is homeless by spending the time necessary to develop a person friendship with him or her.

Through the on line registration you may sign up for bus transportation from Minneapolis and Rochester to Luther College, admission to all sessions, meals, and lodging.
The bus will load at Augsburg (Minneapolis)1:45 pm and at Augsburg (Rochester) at 3:30 pm on Friday and return at approximately 6 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturday. Day students will be housed with Luther College students in residence halls. WEC and grad students have the option of staying with Luther students in a residence hall or staying in a motel at their own expense. Faculty and staff will stay in a motel at their own expense. WRC Brown Bag: Reporting Sexual Assault

Do you know what to do if a student reports that s/he has been sexually assaulted? Come to the WRC Brown Bag Lunch on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at noon to find out. John Pack and Ann Garvey will go over the reporting procedure and discuss what resources are available for students who have been sexually assaulted.

Faculty, staff, and students of all genders are welcome! The WRC is located in 207 Sverdrup.

Feminist Films for Feb: Hip Hop Documentaries

The Feminist Film Series presents HIP HOP: BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES on Friday, February 18, from 4:30-6:30 in the Student Lounge in Christensen:

By self-proclaimed "hip-hop head" Byron Hurt, this is a "riveting documentary that tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today's hip-hop culture." The film "provides thoughtful insight from intelligent, divergent voices including rap artists, industry executives, rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop generation. The film includes interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D and Jadakiss and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons; along with commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Kevin Powell and Sarah Jones and interviews with young women at Spelman College, a historically black school and one of the nation's leading liberal arts institutions."

Movers Needed for a 2-3 Day Weekend Job

Local professor seeks two to four people to help with moving process. Movers will be expected to help pack the household and load moving truck during a two-day period, and unpack the truck and arrange the boxes at a storage facility on the third day.
