Sabo Scholars Application Deadline: Feb 24

SABO SCHOLARS/SCHOLARSHIPS are available for 5 students who will be Juniors next year and demonstrate an interest and commitment to engagement in the political process, public policy issues and careers in public service. Each Sabo Scholar receives a $2000 scholarship [divided equally between the 2 semesters].

Expectations of Sabo Scholars include collaborating with Representative Martin Sabo, Sabo Professor Garry Hesser, and Senior Faculty Fellows to identify and create opportunities for Augsburg students to engage more fully in public policy issues, the political process and exploring career in public service. In addition, the Sabo Scholars help to shape the present endeavors and future direction of the Sabo Center. The Scholars meet monthly with Representative Sabo, Sabo Professor Hesser, Faculty Fellows & local alums and persons engaged in public service, policy related work and political process. The deadline for application is February 24.

Fleece Donations Wanted for Homeless Families

Please help support Augsburg's Special Education Department, along with students ar Fridley Middle School who are involved with Public Achievement, by donating fleece fabric material that will be used to create tie blankets. Monetary donations are also welcome to go towards the purchase of fleece material from fabric stores. The blankets will be made by the students and then donated to homeless families in the area. Now until February 26, 2011 donations can be dropped off in Sverdup Hall's lower level education department office suite. Thanks!

Staff Time Reporting for Campus Closure on Monday

We have received a number of calls and emails regarding the campus closing on Monday and how staff members should reflect that time on their time sheets or absence reports.

In keeping with the Campus Closing Policy:

Staff members who were NOT required to report to work on Monday due to the campus closing will be paid the regular number of hours they would have been scheduled to work that day. Employees should use the pay code "Weather" for Monday 2/21.

Staff members who were listed under essential services and WERE required to report to work on Monday will receive time and one-half pay for the hours worked. Employees should use the pay code "Emergency Shift" and enter the total hours worked under the amount column for Monday 2/21. The code will adjust for the premium pay.

Walk-in Blood Donors Needed TODAY

Due to the snowstorm this past weekend as well as an outbreak of flu there is a desperate need for particularly O and O+ blood donors. Memorial Blood Center is on campus today in the East Commons and has several openings available for walk-in donors (especially between 10:30 and 12 noon.

Please feel free to stop in at East Commons and bring a photo ID. If you plan to donate eat a good breakfast and lunch and drink a lot of water.

If you have any questions or want a specific time feel free to call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707 or come on over to the East Commons.

Rescheduled Send off for Carrie Carroll

Club Native is a candid and deeply moving look at the pain, confusion and frustration suffered by many First Nations people as they struggle for the most important right of all: the right to belong.

On the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake, located just outside the city of Montreal, Canada, there are two firm but unspoken rules drummed into every member of the community: Do not marry a white person and do not have a child with a white person. The potential consequences of ignoring these rules-loss of membership on the reserve, for yourself and your child-are clear, and for those who incur them, devastating. Break the rules, and you also risk being perceived as having betrayed the Mohawk Nation by diluting the "purity" of the bloodline.

In Club Native, filmmaker Tracey Deer uses Kahnawake, her hometown, as a lens to probe deeply into the history and contemporary reality of Aboriginal identity. Following the stories of four women, she reveals the exclusionary attitudes that divide the community and many others like it across Canada. Deer traces the roots of the problem, from the advent of the highly discriminatory Indian Act through the controversy of Bill C31, up to the present day, where membership on the reserve is determined by a council of Mohawk elders, whose rulings often appear inconsistent. And with her own home as a poignant case study, she raises a difficult question faced by people of many ethnicities across the world: What roles do bloodline and culture play in determining identity?
Tracey Deer, Director

Mohawk filmmaker Tracey Deer is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of Canada's finest chroniclers of modern Aboriginal life. She co-directed the feature-length documentary One More River (Rezolution Pictures) about the 2003 agreement between the Cree and Quebec. In 2004, she made Mohawk Girls (Rezolution Pictures/The National Film Board of Canada), a moving portrait of three teenage girls coming of age on her home reserve of Kahnawake, just outside of Montreal.

Tracey graduated in film studies at Dartmouth College in 2000 where she shot, directed and edited three short films before receiving the 25th Anniversary Film and Television Award for overall achievement in film studies. Her films have been broadcast and screened across Canada.

Chrislock Lecture, Marshall Room, 7 p.m. TONIGHT

Please join the Augsburg History Club in welcoming this year's Carl H. Chrislock Memorial History lecturer, Mary Lethert Wingerd at 7PM in the Marshall Room.

Titled "Minnesota's Forgotten History: How it was Hidden and Why it Matters," her presentation will explore new interpretations of Minnesota's earliest history, putting Native peoples and questions of race at the center of her analysis.

Author of the Minnesota Book Award-nominated NORTH COUNTRY: THE MAKING OF MINNESOTA (U. of Minnesota Press, 2010) and CLAIMING THE CITY: POLITICS, FAITH, AND THE POWER OF PLACE IN ST. PAUL (Cornell Univ. Press, 2001), Mary Lethert Wingerd is associate professor of history and director of the public history program at St. Cloud State University.

The Chrislock Memorial History Lecture, sponsored by the Augsburg History Club, honors the memory of Carl H. Chrislock, former professor of history at Augsburg College.

Day students will be housed with Luther College students in residence halls. WEC and grad students have the option of staying with Luther students in a residence hall or staying in a motel at their own expense. Faculty and staff will stay in a motel at their own expense. MIAC Men's Hockey Playoff Times Set

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has set the start times for the conference's men's hockey playoffs, with Augsburg's playoff run set to begin this Friday afternoon at Gustavus.

The Auggies will travel to the Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn., to take on Gustavus in the conference's first-round "play-in" game on Friday (2/25) at 4 p.m. Also on Friday in St. Peter, the Auggie women's hockey team will face Gustavus in the first game of their weekend series at 7 p.m.

The winner of Friday's game will face top-seed Hamline in the semifinals on Saturday (2/26) at 2 p.m. at the Warner Coliseum on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. Saturday's other semifinal will pit No. 3-seed Concordia-Moorhead at No. 2-seed St. Thomas at the St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., at 7 p.m.

The semifinal winners will meet on Wednesday, March 2 in the championship game at the site of the highest remaining seed, with the winner earning the MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III national playoffs.

All Augsburg games in the men's hockey playoffs will be webcast live on Augsburg's athletic website, through the GameCentral portal, with Tom Witschen on the call.

This is the third straight year, and fourth time in the last five years, that Augsburg has reached the MIAC men's hockey playoffs. Augsburg finished the regular season 14-8-3 overall, 8-6-2 in MIAC play. The Auggies will enter the playoffs on a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1), including six straight victories.

Last season, Augsburg and Gustavus met in the playoff semifinals in a game that ended up being the longest in NCAA Division III history -- and what is now the third-longest in all divisions in NCAA men's hockey history. Gustavus ended up winning 6-5 in four overtimes (138:38 of game action), and Augsburg goalie Justin Lochner set an NCAA all-divisions record with 98 saves.

Augsburg played two multi-overtime games in last season's MIAC playoffs, with a two-overtime 3-2 win over St. Olaf in the playoff opener -- the fourth-longest game in Division III men's hockey history. In a span of 28-and-a-half hours, Augsburg played the equivalent of nearly four complete 60-minute regulation games.

Johnson to Receive National Award

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College men's hockey assistant coach Bruce Johnson '68 will be honored for his lifetime contributions to the growth of amateur hockey with the American Hockey Coaches Association's John "Snooks" Kelley Founders Award in April.

A 1968 Augsburg alumnus and a 2007 inductee into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame, Johnson will receive the award at the AHCA Convention in Naples, Fla., on April 30. Johnson has served as an assistant coach for the Auggies since 2006.

Presented since 1981, the AHCA's John "Snooks" Kelley Founders Award "honors those people in the coaching profession who have contributed to the overall growth and development of the sport of ice hockey in the United States," according to the AHCA's website.

Johnson has been involved in hockey, either as a coach or administrator, for more than 40 years, including 32 seasons (1970-2002) as head coach at Robbinsdale Armstrong High School. Johnson won 401 games with the Falcons and earned both conference and section coach of the year honors twice.

As a player, Johnson played one season at Division I Minnesota-Duluth, then transferred to Augsburg, where he played for legendary coach Ed Saugestad '59. After working for a year at Richfield High School, he moved to Robbinsdale High School in 1969, and the following year, moved to Robbinsdale Armstrong High School, where he was named head coach of the hockey team.

In 2000-01, Johnson was named the John Mariucci Minnesota State Class AA Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association, and he received the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association's George Haun Award in 2003 and Dave Peterson Award in 2004. Johnson was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007. He also served as an assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame in 1977-78.

Johnson was named athletic/activities director at Armstrong in 1995 and served in that position until 2003. He was named Region 6AA Athletic Director of the Year in 2003. He served as president of the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Association from 1993-95, and has worked as the organization's executive director from 1999-2006. Johnson has served as a coach and administrator at numerous levels of hockey for the Armstrong Youth Hockey Association, Minnesota Hockey (MAHA), and USA Hockey.

Johnson received his bachelor's degree in social studies (physical education minor) from Augsburg in 1968, and his master's degree from St. Thomas in 1976. He has pursued graduate course work at Minnesota, Indiana and St. Thomas, and received his special education certification from St. Thomas in 1986. Johnson's three children -- Leah, Thomas and Aaron -- all attended Augsburg, and Aaron earned All-American honors twice as a member of the Augsburg men's hockey team.

Johnson is the second Auggie to be honored with an AHCA lifetime achievement award in the past decade. In 2002, Ed Saugestad '59 received the AHCA's John MacIness Award, honoring his coaching career and contributions to the growth of amateur hockey.
