Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - January 20

Biology Faculty candidate Dr. Matthew Beckman will present: "The dance of the water flea: Imaging Daphnia movement and cloning putative genes involved in the development and function of the motor program"

Daphnids exhibit a rich motor behavioral repertoire which is important for food acquisition and avoidance of predation. To date there have been no studies of the pharmacology, genetics or development of the Daphnia nervous system. We are building tools to study Daphnia movement and we are in the process of mining the genome of Daphnia pulex for putative genes involved in the development and control of the dopaminergic nervous system. Preliminary studies in which we have manipulated the neurochemistry of Daphnia indicate a role for dopamine in motor control. This work aims to further develop imaging tools, and to clone and characterize the genes involved in the development and function of dopamine neurons in Daphnia.

When: Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 4:15 – 5:15 p.m.
Where: Science Hall 123

(Please note that there will be two additional faculty candidate seminars. These will be held January 27 and February 3.)

Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Nominations

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Recognition/Outstanding Staff Award!

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.

Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:
• Nomination Form
• At least TWO letters of recommendation

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.

Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

Copies of the nomination form are available at:
web.augsburg.edu/staffsenate/nomination.doc

Nominators and nominees should plan to be present at the Staff Appreciation gathering on Thursday, March 10 at 2:30 p.m. in East Commons, Christensen Center where the Outstanding Staff Award recipients will be announced. We will also honor those who celebrated their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, and 30th anniversaries in 2010.

Please return all nomination forms and letters of recommendation to Kevin Cheatham at CB 47 or SCI 152 by Friday, February 18 at 4 p.m. Thanks.

Mathematics Colloquium this Wednesday

First Mathematics Colloquium, Wednesday, January 19

The first colloquium is scheduled for THIS WEDNESDAY, January 19 in OREN 113 from 3:40 to 4:40 pm. We will show a NOVA Special called "INFINITE SECRETS: THE GENIUS OF ARCHIMEDES.

Description: "In 1991, a small Medieval prayer book was sold at auction. Miraculously, some original writings of Archimedes, the brilliant Greek mathematician, were discovered hidden beneath the religious text. Through scholarly detective work with the help of modern technology, this book now reveals Archimedes' stunningly original concepts, ideas, and theories—revelations that, if known sooner, might have reshaped the world.

Many historic figures have been hailed as ahead of their time. Few—if any—are said to be centuries ahead of their time. The Einstein of his era, Archimedes had a sophisticated understanding of mathematics, and designed marvelous war machines for his native Syracuse to use against the invading Romans. Many of Archimedes' works disappeared during the Middle Ages, but some survived to help inspire the scientific revolution in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. One document that seemed irretrievably lost was his final treatise The Method, which reputedly explained how he achieved his brilliant results—secrets he revealed nowhere else. Now, over 2200 years later, the discovery of The Method has experts and scientists dreaming of what might have been if Renaissance thinkers and other great minds had known of his ideas and been able to build on them.

NOVA explores Archimedes' rare writings, as well as the book's mysterious beginnings, tumultuous history and amazing discovery. As the ancient text comes back from the dead, it unlocks its revolutionary contents—the infinite secrets of one of history's greatest thinkers."

The program runs 60 minutes, so please be there before 3:40 to be able to enjoy the refreshments before the showing begins (promptly at 3:40). — K Kaminsky
