Tutors Needed

We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.

We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Please e-mail Elena Eveslage at eveslage@augsburg.edu if interested in tutoring.

Submitting Academic Alerts

The academic alert system is up and running for Winter WEC and Spring day terms. Now is a great time to send an alert for those students who have not attended your class. This gives us an opportunity to contact students and process withdrawal paperwork as needed.

Instructors are encouraged to send an academic alert to a student when academic concerns are identified. Issues might include, but are not limited to: lack of attendance, unprepared for class, poor performance on tests and assignments, and/or lack of participation. Alerts aren't meant to replace face to face interaction with students. The alert message can however be used in addition to speaking directly with the student and/or when you have been unable to reach them via phone or e-mail.

The alert message is generated from the Augnet Records and Registration class roster. When logged into Augnet, click on Records and Registration. From Records and Registration, go into the appropriate class roster. You'll see a "Prepare Alert" link next to each student's name. Click on the link to access the alert message system. You can also access the alert system through Augnet Administrative Tasks. The alert is automatically sent directly to the student and copied to their faculty advisor and academic support offices.

Please contact Academic Advising with questions about the alert process.

Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - THURSDAY

Biology Faculty candidate Dr. Phil Jensen will present: "Activin Signaling Links Diet and Metabolism during Drosophila Development"

How can animals adjust metabolism to diet? The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster increases its size over one hundred-fold during a five-day period of development, and this transformation occurs even when animals are grown on a variety of food sources. The fly, therefore, is an excellent model system for studying the balance of cellular metabolism and growth. This seminar will highlight a novel molecular signaling event that links two evolutionarily conserved signaling pathways – Activin signaling and insulin signaling – to integrate diet and metabolism during development of the fruit fly.

When: Thursday, January 27, 2011 from 4:15 – 5:15 p.m.
Where: Science Hall 123

(Please note that there will be one additional faculty candidate seminar on Thursday, February 3.)

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:

Academic Alerts

Have you received an email message in your Augsburg email account with the subject line "AA" followed by your name? Have you wondered what that's all about? "AA" stands for Academic Alert. This is a system that some instructors use to identify areas of academic concern specific to your work in their class. Instructors will likely speak with you individually to acknowledge your strengths and areas for improvement. In addition, an instructor may use the academic alert system to supplement individual conversations and address areas of concern. This gives you feedback on where you're at in a class and suggestions for improvement.

Please don't ignore academic alerts. The earlier concerns are addressed, the more likely it is that you'll be able to successfully complete a class. Instructors, faculty advisors, and staff advisors are here to help and support you in achieving your educational goals and to guide you in addressing the alert.

Here are some steps for you to take if you receive an alert: 1) Talk with the instructor about areas of concern and develop an action plan for improvement, 2) Explore resources such as tutoring, study sessions, and academic skills coaching, 3) seek guidance from your faculty advisor, and 4) Talk with the instructor and academic support offices about grade change and withdrawal options.

If you have questions about the academic alert process, please contact Academic Advising, first floor Sverdrup Hall.

Thru Another's Lens - Wednesday, Feb. 2

The Department of Residence Life is continuing its safe dialogue series for community members on issues of human diversity. The overarching goals of this series are to help people understand each other across difference as well as inspire all to take action for positive social change.

The kick off to this series occurred on Wednesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100. This first session looked to develop a common conceptual understanding of oppression dynamics, broadly, allowing the series to take single-issue focus for the rest of the academic year. Now, each session will focus on a particular social identity category while also considering how various oppression dynamics intersect (e.g., class, disability/nondisability, ethnicity, gender, race, religious & spiritual identity, sexual orientation). It is not required to have attended this session on Wednesday, November 3 to attend this or future sessions.

This third session in the series will take place on Wednesday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100 and will focus on race, racism, and ways to take action against racism in everyday life.

So, if you want to join a discussion where you will leave with some tangible takeaways that you can apply, then come join us!

If you have any questions, please contact Will O'Berry at oberry@augsburg.edu.

Free sunglasses as well as dessert will be provided for attendees!

Budgets and Budgeting in a Tough Economy - 1/31

CAO welcomes ALL student leaders to Budgets and Budgeting in a Tough Student Org Economy, the first Spring semester installment to the campus's Student Leadership Series. The goal of this series is to strengthen the awareness, leadership, management, and organizational skills of student leaders around a myriad of different topics.

This will discuss strategies for budgeting, including but not limited to how to lay out clear, organized budgets, what goes into creating a budget, how to project future spending, as well as how to work with a more limited budget. This session will be especially helpful to student organizations which either (1) are already commissioned and will need to submit an annual budget request to Day Student Government or (2) are applying for commissioned status for the first time.

Ann Garvey, Vice President for Student Affairs, will facilitate this workshop on Monday, January 31 at 5:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100.

Please remember, commissioned student organizations are required to send at least one representative to no less than two workshops per semester. Chartered student organizations are required to send at least one representative to no less than one workshop per semester.

Additionally, these workshops are for all student leaders on campus. So if you are not part of a formal organization, feel free to attend.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Still Doing It - Jan. 26 at the WRC

Please join us Wednesday, January 26, in 207 Sverdrup from 12:30-1:30 for the first Brown Bag Lunch and Feminist Film of the Spring Semester. We will be showing STILL DOING IT: THE INTIMATE LIVES OF WOMEN OVER 60, a film that explores the lives of "nine extraordinary women, age 67-87, [who] express with startling honesty and humor how they feel about themselves, sex and love in later life." The filmmakers write: "Our intention is to reverse the widespread stereotypes about growing older and inspire all women to keep doing it - it being whatever turns them on - from following intellectual, political and artistic passions to finding romance and having great sex."

All are welcome!

Spring Brown Bag Lunches and Feminist Film Series 2011:

Lunches (207 Sverdrup):

Tuesday, Feb 15, 12-1: Sarah Griesse will talk with faculty and staff about the procedure for handling student reports of sexual assault.

Wed, March 23, 12:30-1:30 - An experiential session of mindfulness-based stress reduction with founder of Heartwood Mindfulness Practice Center, Judith Lies. Lies has been an instructor of mindfulness-based stress reduction in medical, mental health, professional, educational, religious, and corporate settings for 17 years. She completed the professional training with Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1993 and currently studies with Thich Nhat Hanh and his monks and nuns in France and the U.S.

Thurs, April 7, 12-1 (note date change) - John Zobitz will discuss Julie Des Jardin's book, _The Madame Curie Complex: The Hidden History of Women in Science_. (Des Jardin is a former Augsburg faculty member, now a historian at Baruch College, City University of New York.) The book "seeks to recover a neglected history of women who found entrée into science and engineering, exploring the barriers and choices they encountered, and the impact they made – or failed to make."

Films (Student Lounge, 4:30-6:30, unless otherwise noted):

February 18th: HIP HOP: BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES
By self-proclaimed "hip-hop head" Byron Hurt, this is a "riveting documentary that tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today's hip-hop culture." The film "provides thoughtful insight from intelligent, divergent voices including rap artists, industry executives, rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop generation. The film includes interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D and Jadakiss and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons; along with commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Kevin Powell and Sarah Jones and interviews with young women at Spelman College, a historically black school and one of the nation's leading liberal arts institutions."

February 25th: SAY MY NAME
"Sisters, mothers, businesswomen, role models, music artists—in an industry dominated by men and noted for misogyny, the unstoppable female lyricists of SAY MY NAME speak candidly about class, race, and gender in pursuing their passions as female MCs. From hip hop's birthplace in the Bronx to the ladies of grime on London's eastside, emerging artists to world renowned stars like MC Lyte, Monie Love, Roxanne Shanté, Estelle, Erykah Badu and many more, these are women turning adversity into art."

March 2, Sateren, 7-10pm (this is not part of the Feminist Film Series): Augsburg's Native American Film Series brings us "Tracey Deer presents: CLUB NATIVE".
Hosted by professor and documentary filmmaker Jennifer Machiorlatti, this documentary "raises critical questions about belonging and indigenity, the heartbreak of 'marrying out' of the Mohawk Nation, and the unjust patriarchal laws that disenfranchise Native women. It is a candid and engrossing work about the pain, confusion, and frustration suffered by many First Nations women, but also a testament to the triumph of love and the resilience of the human spirit."

April 8: TEA & JUSTICE
"chronicles the experiences of three women who joined the New York Police Department during the 1980s—the first Asian women to become members of a force that was largely white and predominantly male."
