Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - January 20
Biology Faculty candidate Dr. Matthew Beckman will present: "The dance of the water flea: Imaging Daphnia movement and cloning putative genes involved in the development and function of the motor program"
Daphnids exhibit a rich motor behavioral repertoire which is important for food acquisition and avoidance of predation. To date there have been no studies of the pharmacology, genetics or development of the Daphnia nervous system. We are building tools to study Daphnia movement and we are in the process of mining the genome of Daphnia pulex for putative genes involved in the development and control of the dopaminergic nervous system. Preliminary studies in which we have manipulated the neurochemistry of Daphnia indicate a role for dopamine in motor control. This work aims to further develop imaging tools, and to clone and characterize the genes involved in the development and function of dopamine neurons in Daphnia.
When: Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 4:15 5:15 p.m.
Where: Science Hall 123
(Please note that there will be two additional faculty candidate seminars. These will be held January 27 and February 3.)
