Teaching and Learning

Powerful Conversations on NSSE

Augsburg College uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to learn more about how our students perceive their college experience. Student engagement is strongly related to both student success and retention. This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions.

The remaining sessions are scheduled as follows:
December 16, 2010, OGC 111 – Active and Collaborative Learning (Velma Lashbrook)
February 17, 2011, OGC 100 – Student-Faculty Interaction (Lori Peterson)

Helping Hungry Students

This last year I've hearing more about students who are homeless or hungry or both, and people have approached the Campus Kitchen Project wondering if there's a way for us to help. Two things I'd like to do:

1) Bring together students and others who are connected to students who are really struggling in this way, and think and plan strategically around how to connect them to the services, both on campus and out in the community, that they need.

2) If people need a complimentary meal, anyone can always help us deliver a meal as we often dine with the people we serve. The following shifts are ones where a meal comes with the work:

Delivery, Tuesdays, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. - at Peace House homeless shelter*
Delivery, Tuesdays, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. - at the Brian Coyle Community Center
Delivery, Thursdays, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. - at Peace House homeless shelter*
Cook/Deliver, 2nd, 4th Fridays - 5 - 8 p.m. - Senior dinner at Ebenezer

Our other shifts can always use help, but don't include a meal for those working:

Cooking, Wednesdays, 7 - 9 p.m. - at Augsburg College
Delivery, Thursdays, 3 - 5:30 p.m. - to seniors who live independently
Cook/Deliver, Sundays, 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. - to Secure Waiting homeless shelter

*Peace House on Franklin Ave just east of 35W is one of the most special places I know in the city. Anyone can go there for a free meal Monday through Friday 11:20-12:30 (need to show up on time, as there's always a community conversation before lunch)

Auggie Men's Soccer Earns Academic Award

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/11/22/msoc112210.aspx?path=msoc

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the fifth straight year, the Augsburg College men's soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's Team Academic Award, with a team grade-point average of 3.23 this season.

A total of 195 men's soccer teams in all NCAA and NAIA divisions posted team GPAs of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale to earn NSCAA Team Academic Award honors. There were a total of 632 programs in college soccer (195 men, 437 women) to earn NSCAA Team Academic Award honors with team GPAs of 3.00 or higher.

It is the fifth straight year that Augsburg's men's soccer team has earned the NSCAA academic honor, after recording a 3.42 team GPA in 2009, 3.29 team GPA in 2008, a 3.20 team GPA in 2007 and a 3.08 team GPA in 2006. Augsburg is one of six Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools to receive the NSCAA academic honor.

Under seventh-year head coach Greg Holker, Augsburg finished the 2010 season with one of the best records in school history, finishing with a school-record 16 victories (16-5-1) and the MIAC's postseason playoff championship. Augsburg qualified for the NCAA Division III national playoffs for the second time in the last three years, and finished with a double-digit win record for the fourth time in the last five years.
