Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Winter/Snow Parking for Cars and Bicycles

When a significant amount of snow falls, the city of Minneapolis declares a Snow Emergency to remove accumulating snow from the full width of city streets. If you are parked on a city street and do not follow the snow emergency rules, your vehicle will be ticketed and towed by the city.

If you park on city streets, please visit the city of Minneapolis snow emergency web site. Here you will find the snow emergency parking rules along with an interactive map showing where you can park and when. The snow emergency parking page is:
http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/snow/snow-emergency.asp

It is NOT Augsburg's responsibility to notify you of snow emergencies on city streets. If the city tows your car, it will cost you several hundred dollars to get it back. If you park on city streets, I STRONGLY recommend that you subscribe to e-mail/SMS and phone notification of snow emergencies. The following links will take you directly to those services:

To receive an e-mail of SMS message when a snow emergency is declared:
http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/snow/esubscribe.asp

To receive an automated phone call when a snow emergency is declared:
http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/snow/phone-alert.asp

If you have an Augsburg parking permit and are properly parked in one of our lots, our maintenance crews will do their best to plow around your car. If we need you to move your vehicle, we can look you up by your license plate if it is registered in parking services. If need be, you can check out a shovel with your student or employee ID card at the DPS desk in the Urness/Mortenson lobby.

Day (temporary) parking passes for Augsburg lots are available for $5 through Augnet's Parking Services. Passes are limited.

BICYCLES:
Bicycles must be parked and locked in approved bicycle racks on campus. Bicycles parked along fences or other unapproved areas may be damaged during snow plowing or may be removed by Public Safety to allow for plowing.

Those who do not plan to ride during the winter months are encouraged to store their bicycles at their parent's homes if possible. Thanksgiving break is a good time to load it up and take it home.

There are a limited number of bicycle lockers available for rental for a small fee. For more information, e-mail borcharj@augsburg.edu.

Teaching and Technology Tapas

The IT Liaisons for Computing (LFCs) have been working to redesign our traditional technology training efforts. We were interested in developing ways to introduce new technologies that can be integrated into the effective teaching and learning practice of busy faculty and staff. Our answer was tapas.

Tapas are small plates of delicious food which can be eaten as appetizers or combined to form a meal shared with friends. Similarly, our Teaching and Technology Tapas are tasty bite-sized technology tips which will be presented by several IT staff in 3 to 5 minute segments. You can drop by for just a few topics or stay to experience an entire workshop. Please join us for:

"Teaching and Technology Tapas: Web Browser Tools and Tips"
Thursday, November 18 from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Christensen Center Cedar Room

About the Workshop
Navigating and utilizing information on the Internet has become a ubiquitous task in our daily work, yet learning how to best leverage tools of a web browser can often be overlooked. Our Browser Tapas menu will offer a wide assortment of tools and tasty tips to help you leverage your browser in powerful ways.

The presentation will be informal so please feel free to come and go as your schedule allows - we've designed the program with this in mind! Content is appropriate for users with all levels of computing experience.

We look forward to seeing you!

Powerful Conversations on NSSE

Tuesday, November 23, 12:00-1:15, Century Room (Note Room Change)

Augsburg College uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to learn more about how our students perceive their college experience. Student engagement is strongly related to both student success and retention. This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions.

The remaining sessions are scheduled as follows:
November 23, 2010, Century Room - Level of Academic Challenge (Amy Gort)
December 16, 2010, OGC 111 - Active and Collaborative Learning (Velma Lashbrook)

Light refreshments will be served.
Please rsvp to hedstrom@augsburg.edu

General Announcements

Dogsburg College Working Group

Please join us for the second meeting of the Dogsburg College Working Group. We want to continue our discussion of strategies to change the rules at Augsburg so that dogs will be allowed on campus. Anyone interested in helping, or just hearing what's going on, should attend. Any change in policy needs to address the health and safety concerns of the entire community. It's possible to have a pet-friendly policy that addresses those concerns, but any discussion of a change in policy needs to include opposing views. Whatever your thoughts about dogs on campus, please join us.

Those who have collected signatures on our petitions are asked to return these. If you'd like to sign the petition, or collect signatures, please come to the meeting.

Next Monday, November 22, 2010 at 5:00 p.m., in the Christensen Center Fishbowl. For more info, join our facebook page: Dogsburg College.

Hoodies for Hope

Saint Joseph's provides emergency shelter for children from the ages of 5 to 17. These children often arrive with only the clothes on their backs. You can help to keep these children warm this winter by donating your old Hoodies that you have laying around.

They are also in need of basic toiletries - simple things like toothpaste and a toothbrush can mean the world of difference to a child whose world has been turned upside down.

So show your Auggie pride and help those in our community who need it the most by donating a gently used hoodie or some basic toiletries at either of the events below. For your generous donation, we will be providing cookies and coffee while they last.

Saturday November 20th from 11 am - 1pm in Christensen Center.

this subject and attempting to bridge the gaps that presently exist
between them.
