Designing and Assessing Written Assignments

February 14, 7:30-9:00 am, OGC 100

The fourth session of our Foundational Series on Student Learning addresses how to construct and assess written assignments designed to demonstrate the achievement of learning outcomes. Writing is one of the four skill requirements for graduation at Augsburg, and writing assignments are embedded across the curriculum. Constructing meaningful written assignments in a way that challenges students and enables them to be successful isn't easy. Assessing written work fairly and providing useful feedback to help students improve can also be difficult. You will explore how to structure assignments and how to assess them in a way that facilitates improvement. To get the most out of this workshop, bring the instructions and assessment tool you intend to use for a future written assignment.

Facilitator: Kathy Swanson, English.

Powerful Conversations on NSSE

Tuesday, November 23, 12:00-1:15, Century Room (Note Room Change)

Augsburg College uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to learn more about how our students perceive their college experience. Student engagement is strongly related to both student success and retention. This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions.

The remaining sessions are scheduled as follows:
November 23, 2010, Century Room - Level of Academic Challenge (Amy Gort)
December 16, 2010, OGC 111 - Active and Collaborative Learning (Velma Lashbrook)
February 17, 2011, OGC 100 - Student-Faculty Interaction (Lori Peterson)
March 24, 2011, OGC 100 - Enriching Educational Experiences (Lori Brandt Hale)
April 21, 2011, OGC 100 - Supportive Campus Environment (Ann Garvey)

Light refreshments will be served.

Turkeypalooza 2010

Faculty, Staff, and Students,

Campus Kitchens is running 'Turkeypalooza,' a 6 year old Augsburg tradition of working to provide over 600 Thanksgiving dinners during November. We're reaching out to faculty, staff, and students to help us gather enough ingredients to make this happen. We're looking for turkeys, stuffing, potatoes, green bean casserole (green beans, cream of mushroom soup, fried onions), and pumpkin pie (pumpkins, canned or fresh, crust mix), and cash to purchase what we can't gather. Could you help organize your office or department to gather ingredients? If you could, please let us know what item you would like to focus on, and how much of it would be realistic for you to collect. We'll be collecting all the donations on Friday, November 12th and Monday, November 15th. Also, we are looking for volunteers to help with cooking or serving the dinners. Please let me know, and thanks for helping make this happen!

This will continue our commitment to help in recovery work in the Gulf Coast and offer up an amazing opportunity for the participants to focus on service, vocation, and interfaith collaboration in a memorable way. We hope you will consider participating this year!

If you may be interested in participating, please come to one of the three informational sessions. At the session we will have more details/history of Alternative Spring Break, this year's site, and the registration process.

The informational sessions will be held in Foss 175 for the following times:
Wed., Nov. 17, 8:15-9:00PM
Thurs, Nov. 18, 3:00-3:45PM

Auggies Open NCAA Men's Soccer Playoffs Saturday

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/11/7/msoc110710.aspx?path=msoc

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College will face the College of St. Scholastica in the opening round of the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament in Whitewater, Wis., this Saturday, the NCAA announced on Monday.

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff champions, Augsburg (15-4-1 overall) will face St. Scholastica (17-3-2 overall), regular-season and playoff champions of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Fiskum Field on Saturday at approximately 7:30 p.m. (30 minutes after conclusion of the 5 p.m. game). In the other game at Whitewater at 5 p.m., the host Warhawks (12-2-3 overall) will take on MIAC regular-season champion Macalester (14-4-1 overall). The winners of Saturday's games will meet on Sunday at 6 p.m. in Whitewater.

Augsburg is making its second-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament, the first coming in 2008 under head coach Greg Holker. That season, the Auggies advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" round of the tournament.

The Auggies have won seven games in a row entering the national tournament, including a 1-0 win over Carleton in the MIAC semifinals last Tuesday and a 3-2, overtime win over Concordia-Moorhead in the MIAC finals on Friday at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.

Augsburg's 15-4-1 record ties the most wins for an Auggie squad in program history, tying the 1975 MIAC champion squad, which went 15-2-1. Augsburg has recorded double-digit win campaigns in four of the last five years under Holker, who is 63-38-15 in seven seasons at Augsburg.

St. Scholastica is making its first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament, as the UMAC gained an automatic qualifying spot for the national tournament for the first time this season. Augsburg is 7-8-1 all-time against St. Scholastica, and are 6-0-1 in the last seven meetings with the Saints, dating to the 2003 season.
