Documenting Time Off for the Holiday

Dr. Paul Pribbenow has graciously proclaimed July 2, 2010, as an additional paid holiday. This applies to all non-union benefits eligible employees, both exempt and non-exempt. This is in addition to the July 5, 2010 scheduled holiday for Independence Day.

To indicate these days off and to be ensured payment for the day, please indicate the number of hours to be paid, prorated for those working less than 1.0 FTE, with the code PH (President’s Holiday) on July 2nd and with the code H (July 4th Holiday) on July 5th. This is to be done on timesheets or absence reports, depending on which the employee is required to complete.

If a supervisor feels it is necessary for an employee to work on July 2nd, please make arrangements with the employee to take another day off the next week and mark it as PH in the same manner noted above.

Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

Have a safe and happy long Fourth of July weekend!!

National Endowment for the Humanities opportunity

"The NEH Enduring Questions grant program supports the development of a new course that will foster intellectual community through the study of an enduring question. This course will encourage undergraduates and teachers to grapple with a fundamental question addressed by the humanities, and to join together in a deep and sustained program of reading in order to encounter influential thinkers over the centuries and into the present day. What is an enduring question? The following list is neither prescriptive nor exhaustive but serves to illustrate. What is the good life? What is good government? Is there such a thing as a just war? What is friendship? What is beauty? What is the relationship between humans and the natural world? What is evil? Are there universals in human nature? What are the origins of the universe? Enduring questions are questions to which no discipline, field, or professions can lay an exclusive claim. In many cases they predate the formation of the academic disciplines themselves. Enduring questions can be tackled by reflective individuals regardless of their chosen vocations, areas of expertise, or personal backgrounds. They are questions that have more than one plausible or compelling answer. They have long held interest for young people, and they allow for a special, intense dialogue across generations. The Enduring Questions grant program will help promote such dialogue in today’s undergraduate environment." Proposals due Sept. 15. Please contact me at forbes@augsburg.edu if you are interested.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Congratulate Bill Wittenbreer on his Article

Please congratulate Bill Wittenbreer on his contribution to a new book on Minnesota's history -- _The State We're In_, edited by Annette Atkins and Debbie Miller, just published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press.

The nineteen essays in this collection were gleaned from a conference on the occasion of Minnesota's 150th anniversary. Essays cover such topics as baseball at Native American boarding schools, nineteenth-century predictions for Minnesota’s future (Bill's essay),Native American tourist goods, the Kensington rune stone, and a memoir of growing up in Marshall. Bringing together some of the most recent and best thinking about Minnesota’s past and its people, The State We’re In demonstrates the history of this place, in all its rich complexity, before and after statehood.

Contributors include Melodie Andrews, Annette Atkins, Marge Barrett, Matt Callahan, Emily Ganzel, Linda LeGarde Grover, Louis Jenkins, David J. Laliberte, James Madison, J. Thomas Murphy, Nora Murphy, Traci M. Nathans-Kelly, Paula Nelson, Patrick Nunnally, Linda Schloff, Gregory Schroeder, Hamp Smith, Barbara W. Sommer, Tangi Villerbu, Howard J. Vogel, Steven Werle, Bill Wittenbreer, and Michael Zalar.
