Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Crime Alert: Burglary in Mortenson Hall

On Thursday, June 17, 2010, at approximately 4 AM, an individual entered a residence hall room that was not theirs and took several personal electronic items that did not belong to them. The residents had left their room unlocked while they were sleeping. The responsible party was identified and arrested later that morning.

If you have any information regarding this crime, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department or Augsburg's Department of Public Safety. You can reach DPS all day, every day by dialing 1717 from an on-campus phone or 612-330-1717 from an off-campus phone.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

- Keep your residence hall room locked when you are sleeping.

- Always lock your room or office whenever you leave, even if you will only be gone briefly. Most home burglaries take only 3 to 5 minutes, a residence hall or office burglary can take even less time.

- Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in drawer or cabinet. Better yet, take your valuables with you or leave them at home.

- Keep your car keys on your person at all times. If a crook can take your keys, they can take your car.

- Regularly back-up all data on your computer and encourage your friends and colleagues to do likewise. Students and employees should contact student computing or their LFC respectively with questions about backing up their data.

- Be aware of strangers who may be looking for valuables to return and steal later. Immediately report suspicious activity to Augsburg DPS.

- Don’t let non-residents follow you through the card controlled exterior doors of a residence hall. This practice is also known as "tailgating." If a stranger does follow you in, please call DPS at 1717 and let us know.

If you have questions or concerns regarding crime at Augsburg, please contact John Pack, Director of Public Safety at 612-330-1644 or pack@augsburg.edu.

Teaching and Learning

Internationalize your Department

The Fulbright Scholar-in Residence (S-I-R) Program enables U.S. colleges and universities to bring a visiting scholar from abroad to campus for a semester or academic year to lecture and to interact with the campus as a whole and the community in a variety of ways. Scholars can be requested by name or recruited for you by U.S. Embassies and Fulbright Commissions in 150 countries around the world in a host of subject fields. This is an excellent way to internationalize your campus, curriculum and community and preference in this program is given to small liberal arts colleges. To learn how to apply to host a Fulbright-Scholar-in- Residence and what makes a successful application, a special webinar is being offered for small liberal arts colleges. It will feature program administrators and small liberal arts college representatives who have been successful S-I-R hosts. Date and time: June 28, 2010, 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm EDT. Menand Reading Group

Several faculty and staff are planning to read and discuss the well-received book on higher education by scholar and essayist Louis Menand: The Marketplace of Ideas. All faculty and staff are invited to join us. Here's how:

Copies of Menand's The Marketplace of Ideas are available at the CTL desk. The book is short and should be easy to read over the summer. The stipulation: Taking a copy obligates you to attend at least two of four discussion sessions Doug Green will organize in the fall. For further information, contact Doug Green <green@augsburg.edu>. To get your copy, sign for it with Terry Martin at CTL <martin@augsburg.edu>.
