Garry will be reflecting on his recent sabbatical travels and immersion as an experiential learner with the CGE Namibian Semester students and Ethiopians and former students, along with travels in the Middle East as a learner with Exploratas/Elderhostel. "I find myself pondering the power people's stories/narratives and how much that adds to one's understanding of reality."

GMAT Prep: Register for our Summer Course

Thinking about a Master of Business Administration program after graduation? Most MBA programs require the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) for admission. The Augsburg MBA Program is partnering with the Princeton Review to provide GMAT preparation at a discounted rate.

The course will meet Wednesdays 6-9 p.m. for seven weeks (June 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30, and July 7 & 14). The cost is $549, which includes access to the Princeton Review's online student center, the Manual for the GMAT 8.3, and the GMAT Review 12th edition.

Zyzzogeton 2010 Starts Thursday

Summer GRE Prep Course: Register Now

Are you interested in going to graduate school? Most masters and doctoral programs require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You'll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

The course meets Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. for six weeks (May 25-June 29). The cost is only $40, which includes test prep materials; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review that cost over $1,000.

Augsburg staff, alums, as well as non-Augsburg students are welcome to register.

LSAT PREP: Register Online Now

LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) Prep will be offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity.

The course will meet Wednesdays May 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. The course instructor previously taught with the Princeton Review and has scored in the 99th percentile on the exam. The course cost is only $150, which includes test prep materials. (Most LSAT tutors charge $150/hour; this course will get you 12 hours of instruction for the same price).

Augsburg staff, alums, as well as non-Augsburg students are welcome to register.

International Travel Funding Date Extended

Additional International Travel Funding Available
Due April 23

Faculty presenting a paper at an international conference are eligible for additional travel funding through CTL. Two $400 awards are available to supplement the annual travel award of $1200 for which faculty presenting a paper are eligible. (Canada is considered international.) These supplemental awards are determined competitively by the Committee on Faculty Development. The funding year is June 1-May 31st.

Residence Life Announcement

Amanda Temple is departing from our Residence Life team in May after 4 years of dedication and community enhancement at Augsburg College. In Urness Hall, Mortensen Hall, Urness Hall Council, CAO Student Organizations, CCHP, the ELP program, or the Hula Hoop Club -- Amanda provides leadership, encouragement, and advocacy for all. Advising over 1280 residents and supervising over 48 student staff members - Amanda leads with compassion, understanding, and a developmental approach. She devotes energy, creativity, and support to many students, projects, and initiatives while at Augsburg College. We wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.

Attention 2010 Graduates

Positions are open for Teaching Assistants in the English Language Center at United International College(UIC) in China. UIC in Zhuhai (Southern China) is the only liberal arts college in China with courses in English. UIC is an exchange partner with Augsburg College. Those hired as TA's receive round trip air transportation, housing, and a stipend of approximately $700/month. Candidates may be from any academic discipline but must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, and excellent command of written and spoken English. Continuing Education Meeting

Last year, a work group including members of the Augsburg for Adults and the Education departments, in cooperation with several members of the faculty and staff, completed an AQIP Action Project on Continuing Education at Augsburg. At the end of last year, the project's steering committee drafted a report on our findings.
At this point in the year, the steering committee invites the campus community to a discussion regarding the report's findings and recommendations. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 20 at 12 PM in OGC 100.

April is "Volunteer Recognition Month"

During the month of April please thank your volunteers or any volunteer you see on campus for their time and talent they share with us. Volunteer week specifically is April 18th to the 22nd.

The 300 plus volunteers we have on record have donated 1833.05 hours from April 2009 to January 2010. I know we have more volunteers on campus that we are not aware of, please let us know who they are so we can recognize them for their good works. As the volunteer coordinator for programs on campus it is my responsibility to track and record their hours and where they volunteer. Please let me know of any volunteers you have in your program. Career Event TODAY

The Strommen Career and Internship Center is hosting a "Resume Reviews & Practice Interviews with Employers" event on campus for all Augsburg students on Wednesday, April 14th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Christensen Center.

Students will have an opportunity to have employers from businesses, sciences, and non-profits review their resumes and/or conduct a short practice interview session. Students will receive valuable feedback from employers to help prepare them for their job/internship search. No appointment necessary! Students can stop by and stay as long as they like.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Augsburg Writers Present

English Department faculty Cass Dalglish and Cary Waterman, along with senior Andrea Sanow and alumna Kayla Skarbakka, gave a presentation at the Annual Conference of the Association of Writers and Writing Programs in Denver last week. The title of their presentation was "Writing Is Not a Luxury: Establishing a Mentor/Partner Plan to Guarantee Writing Space for Teachers and Students."

Published Lectures on Science and Religion

In October Bruce Reichenbach gave three lectures on science and religion in Beijing at Tsinghua University, one of the top two universities in China. They have now been published by Blackwells as "Realism, Science and Models," "Religious Realism," and "Experience and the Unobservable," in Melville Stewart, ed., SCIENCE AND RELIGION IN DIALOGUE.

Auggie Awards Set for Monday

The Augsburg athletic department will come together to hold a formal awards gala to honor the achievement of Auggie student-athletes, with the third annual Auggie Awards ceremony, to be held at Si Melby Hall on Monday, April 19.

The Auggie Awards ceremony is a formal-attire event, open to student-athletes, Augsburg athletics staff and special guests. A pre-ceremony reception, complete with a "Maroon Carpet," will begin at 6 p.m. at Si Melby Hall, with the awards ceremony to follow at 7:30 p.m. The ceremony is styled after major awards ceremonies, such as the Oscars and ESPYs, complete with video highlights, music and more. A dessert reception will follow the awards.

There will be several special awards presented during the ceremony. Team awards will be the Men's and Women's Outstanding Teams of the Year, as well as the Men's and Women's Most Improved Teams of the Year and the Academic Team of the Year. Individual awards will include the Men's and Women's Rookies of the Year, the Men's and Women's Outstanding Athletes of the Year and the Men's and Women's Honor Athlete Awards (the highest honor given to senior student-athletes). Student-athletes with the highest grade-point average will also be honored, and recipients of the Joyce Pfaff and Ed Saugestad Academic Awards will be honored.

Award candidates were determined by Augsburg athletics staff, and a preliminary vote of Augsburg athletics staff narrowed the initial candidates to four finalists in each individual category. A second vote of the finalists was held by the Augsburg athletics staff, along with members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), to determine the winners in each category. SAAC members will be presenting the awards at the ceremony.
