Study Environmental Politics in Central America

Join Professor Joe Underhill next spring semester in a course like no other! For two weeks over winter break, analyze environmental challenges, opportunities and interrelationships as you visit eco-tourism sites, sustainable farming cooperatives and meet with local government officials, activists and business leaders in both Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Then spend the rest of spring semester synthesizing what you learned, and applying it to our context here in Minneapolis.

Course title: ENV 310: Environmental Politics Field Seminar OR POL 461: Topics in International Politics

Travel Dates: Dec. 30, 2010-Jan. 15, 2011 (course meets before travel and lasts all spring semester)

Cost: $2,739 for full-time Day students, $3,099 for WEC students

Fulfills: Augsburg Experience and Upper division requirement/elective for ES, POL and IR

Alternative Energy Options: Wed. April 7 at 3:45 p.m.

The Sabo Center invites you to the Sabo Symposium on Alternative Energy Options, to take place on Wednesday, April 7, from 3:40–6 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel and Foss Center. You will learn about options in nuclear energy, biodiesel fuels, and wind energies. The symposium is co-sponsored by the academic departments in natural science and math (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, and environmental studies), along with the Chemistry Club and Sabo Scholars. Martin Sabo will serve as moderator. The panelists will host breakout sessions after the panel to further discuss their work and careers [5:00-6:00].

The panelists are:

• Cynthia Jones '81, a senior technical adviser for nuclear security at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
• Clayton McNeff '91, CEO of ZirChrom Separations and co-inventor of the Mcgyan Process
• Rolf Miller, technical consulting services manager of WindLogics

John R. Academy of American Poets Prize

The Augsburg English Department is pleased to announce Brianna Olson-Carr the winner of The John R. Mitchell Academy of American Poets Prize for 2009-10. Honorable Mention is awarded to Drew DeGennaro and Elise Estrada. The prize was judged this year by Philip Bryant, author of several collections of poetry and Professor of English at Gustavus Adolphus College. The winner receives $100 and a certificate from the Academy of American Poets. This poetry prize is given in honor of the late John Mitchell, poet and longtime professor of English at Augsburg College.

Yoga Reminders

There will be no student yoga session tonight (Wednesday 4/7). The evening yoga session will resume next week on Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:45 - 8:45 p.m. in the Marshall Room.

Also, the Thursday noon yoga session tomorrow will be in the Century Room (lower level of Christensen Center) from 12 - 1 pm instead of the Marshall Room.

Practice your Spanish this Thursday

Spring gives us all the urge to try something new, so how about joining us to practice your Spanish? The setting is very informal and you don't need to speak Spanish well to join us. All language levels are welcome - we promise there won't be any grammar lessons! We will meet this Thurs., 4/8, from 11:00 - 12:30 in the Augsburg Rm., 2nd fl Christensen Center. To allow for larger documents and higher quality prints, the Murphy Square editorial board has set up a g-mail account.

Sverdrup Lecture Events, April 12 - 13

Dr. Mark Rea, director of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center and a professor in Architecture and Cognitive Sciences will present, "The surprisingly important role of light and dark on human health" On Monday, April 12, 7:30 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel. Tuesday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hoversten Chapel, he will present, "Sunrise and sunset: Why it will be hard to colonize other planets." Dr. Mark Rea teaches courses in leadership and in visual and circadian processes, conducts research in many areas including circadian photobiology, mesopic vision, psychological responses to light, lighting engineering and visual performance.

The General Leif J. Sverdrup Visiting Scientist program is made possible through the Sverdrup Lecture Endowment Fund and the Minnesota Space Grant Consortium. These events are free and open to the public. For more information concerning parking or the events, please call 612-330-1104.

This Thursday the Augsburg English Department will host Career Night, and event meant to broaden students' knowledge of possible career pursuits after graduation. The event, targeted primarily toward English majors and minors, will feature several guest speakers who work in various fields that may be of interest to students pursuing a degree in English. Begins at 5 pm in the Music Hall- room 23. Free snacks and refreshments. Come and learn what's available after graduation! The event will last approximately one hour. Don't miss it!

Resume Reviews and Practice Interviews with Employer

The Strommen Career and Internship Center is hosting a "Resume Reviews & Practice Interviews with Employers" event on campus for all Augsburg students on Wednesday, April 14th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Christensen Center.

Students will have an opportunity to have employers from businesses, sciences, and non-profits review their resumes and/or conduct a short practice interview session. Students will receive valuable feedback from employers to help prepare them for their job/internship search. No appointment necessary! Students can stop by and stay as long as they like.
