Lunch with Garry Hesser

"Expanding the Sociological Imagination: Looking With Both Eyes"
Thursday, April 15, 11:30-1 in the Minneapolis Room.

Garry will be reflecting on his recent sabbatical travels and immersion as an experiential learner with the CGE Namibian Semester students and Ethiopians and former students, along with travels in the Middle East as a learner with Exploratas/Elderhostel. "I find myself pondering the power people's stories/narratives and how much that adds to one’s understanding of reality."

Summer LSAT Prep: Register Now

Pre-Law Students:

LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) Prep will be offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity.

The course will meet Wednesdays May 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. The course instructor previously taught with the Princeton Review and has scored in the 99th percentile on the exam. The course cost is only $150, which includes test prep materials. (Most LSAT tutors charge $150/hour; this course will get you 12 hours of instruction for the same price).

Augsburg staff, alums, as well as non-Augsburg students are welcome to register.

Register for On-Campus, Summer GRE Prep

Are you interested in going to graduate school? Most masters and doctoral programs require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You'll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

The course meets Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. for six weeks (May 25-June 29). The cost is only $40, which includes test prep materials; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review that cost over $1,000.

Augsburg staff, alums, as well as non-Augsburg students are welcome to register.

International Travel Funding Date Extended

Additional International Travel Funding Available
Due April 23

Faculty presenting a paper at an international conference are eligible for additional travel funding through CTL. Two $400 awards are available to supplement the annual travel award of $1200 for which faculty presenting a paper are eligible. (Canada is considered international.) These supplemental awards are determined competitively by the Committee on Faculty Development. The funding year is June 1-May 31st.

It's time again for the Richard J. Thoni award nominations!
Faculty and staff are asked to nominate a graduating Weekend College senior for the Richard J. Thoni Award by April 16th, 2010. This award honors a graduating senior student from the Weekend College programs (Twin Cities or Rochester campus) whose actions, commitments, and future aspirations most profoundly demonstrate a commitment to Augsburg's motto of "Education for Service."

Memorial Hall Network Upgrade, Saturday, April 24

IT will upgrade the networking equipment in Memorial Hall on Saturday, April 24th, beginning at 7:00am and lasting until Noon. During this time, no network access, including wireless, will be available in Memorial Hall. No other buildings will be affected.

If you have questions or concerns about the networking upgrade, please contact your LFC.

We are excited to announce the 2nd Annual Diversity and Global Learning Conference. Last year over 90 members of Augsburg College's faculty and staff attended keynote presentations, breakout sessions, and a pre-conference workshop. Please take this opportunity to let the Augsburg community know about (or experience first-hand) the exciting work related to diversity and global learning you and your colleagues are doing.

Preliminary Conference Goals:
Goal: President Paul Pribbenow and Chief Diversity Officer Andrea Turner will articulate Augsburg's vision and direction related to Augsburg's commitment to intentional diversity in its life and work.

Goal: The conference will help faculty and staff assess and improve our intercultural competence to facilitate our work.

Resume Reviews and Practice Interviews w/ Employers

The Strommen Career and Internship Center is hosting a "Resume Reviews & Practice Interviews with Employers" event on campus for all Augsburg students on Wednesday, April 14th from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Christensen Center.

Students will have an opportunity to have employers from businesses, sciences, and non-profits review their resumes and/or conduct a short practice interview session. Students will receive valuable feedback from employers to help prepare them for their job/internship search. No appointment necessary! Students can stop by and stay as long as they like.

Non-Profit Job Fair - Tuesday

Non-Profit Job Fair - Sponsored by the MN Private Colleges Career Consortium. This collaborative event will provide the opportunity to explore careers with a focus on social justice - with particular focus on jobs in the nonprofit sector. There will be speakers, workshops, and panels to attend throughout the day offering information about working for change. U of M, Coffman Union, Great Hall. Tuesday, April 13th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. FREE and open to all.

Sverdrup Lecture Events, April 12-13

Dr. Mark Rea, director of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center and a professor in Architecture and Cognitive Sciences will present, "The surprisingly important role of light and dark on human health" On Monday, April 12, 7:30 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel. Tuesday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hoversten Chapel, he will present, "Sunrise and sunset: Why it will be hard to colonize other planets." Dr. Mark Rea teaches courses in leadership and in visual and circadian processes, conducts research in many areas including circadian photobiology, mesopic vision, psychological responses to light, lighting engineering and visual performance.

The General Leif J. Sverdrup Visiting Scientist program is made possible through the Sverdrup Lecture Endowment Fund and the Minnesota Space Grant Consortium. These events are free and open to the public. For more information concerning parking or the events, please call 612-330-1104.

Agre Challenge 2010: Bridge Building

We've launched sandbags and saved babies, and now it's time to build bridges! This year's Agre Challenge is to build the sturdiest bridge over a three foot span using limited materials.

An Evening with Author Eric Dregni, April 26

Eric Dregni, author of "In Cod We Trust: Living the Norwegian Dream," will show us Norway through the eyes of a first-time Minnesota visitor. The book is a memoir of the year he and his wife spent living in Trondheim and traveling throughout Norway through a Fulbright Fellowship. Dregni will show photos of Norway and will read selections from the book, which Arvonne Fraser describes as "part travelogue, part examination of how the immigrant experience affects generations on both sides of the Atlantic."

Dregni is an assistant professor of English and journalism at Concordia University in St. Paul and dean of the Italian Concordia Language Village. He is a freelance journalist and the author of several books. His latest, "Never Trust a Thin Cook and Other Lessons from Italy’s Culinary Capital" is a collection of essays written while he worked in Italy for five years as a travel journalist.
