Explore Vocation and Christian Faith in El Salvador

Join Professor Bev Stratton in winter break to examine how Christian theology has been used to justify oppression, support social justice movements, and offer hope in Christian communities in El Salvador, while you also focus on the concept of vocation in the context of poverty and political injustice.

Course title: REL 480: Vocation and the Christian Faith: El Salvador

Travel Dates: January 6-16, 2011 (course meets before and after travel)

Cost: $2,759 for full-time Day students, $3,119 for WEC students

Fulfills: Augsburg Experience and Keystone

Practice your Spanish Today

Spring gives us all the urge to try something new, so how about joining us to practice your Spanish? The setting is very informal and you don't need to speak Spanish well to join us. All language levels are welcome - we promise there won't be any grammar lessons! We will meet this Thurs., 4/8, from 11:00 - 12:30 in the Augsburg Rm., 2nd fl Christensen Center. Drop in for 10 mins. or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Bring you lunch if you wish. Alternative Approaches to Strategic Planning

Augsburg's Center for Leadership Studies invites you to attend a workshop entitled "Alternative Approaches to Strategic Planning: Using an Approach That Fits" presented by Bryan Barry.

Date: Thursday, April 22
Time: 5:30 p.m. social time with refreshments; 6:00-7:00 p.m. presentation
Oren Gateway Center, Room 100

Selecting a strategic planning approach that fits the organization well—situation, style, and strategic choices—makes a great difference in the plan's effectiveness. In this presentation, Barry will:
• Describe the basic four approaches to strategic planning
• Highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each approach
• Offer tips on selecting a planning approach that will work well for your organization
• Offer suggestions for planning with alliances and networks of organizations

For 30 years, Bryan Barry has led consulting groups at Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, Honeywell, Leadership Foundations of America, and Barry Consulting that have assisted several hundred organizations and alliances in their strategic planning. Barry's "Strategic Planning Workbook for Nonprofit Organizations" is in its sixteenth printing. He holds a BBA from the University of Texas, an M Div from Luther Seminary, and an MA in industrial relations/organization behavior from the University of Minnesota.

Build Bridges, Not Fences

A night of sharing on Global and Local Partnerships for Social Justice.

Waite House youth and members of ALAS (Augsburg Latina/os ~ Augsburg Students) will be sharing the importance of social justice partnerships. Waite House students will be sharing about their March 2010 youth delegation to Guatemala.

The students will also be selling youth-designed t-shirts from their sister community in Guatemala.

All proceeds benefit "Build Bridges, Not Fences" youth-led initiatives.

Sverdrup Lecture Events, April 12-13

Dr. Mark Rea, director of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center and a professor in Architecture and Cognitive Sciences will present, "The surprisingly important role of light and dark on human health" On Monday, April 12, 7:30 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel. Tuesday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hoversten Chapel, he will present, "Sunrise and sunset: Why it will be hard to colonize other planets." Dr. Mark Rea teaches courses in leadership and in visual and circadian processes, conducts research in many areas including circadian photobiology, mesopic vision, psychological responses to light, lighting engineering and visual performance.

The General Leif J. Sverdrup Visiting Scientist program is made possible through the Sverdrup Lecture Endowment Fund and the Minnesota Space Grant Consortium. These events are free and open to the public. For more information concerning parking or the events, please call 612-330-1104.

Financial Aid Presentation for Augsburg for Adults

The financial deadline for Augsburg for Adults students is June 1, 2010. All WEC undergraduate students and graduate students only need to submit their FAFSA (www.fafsa.gov) by June 1, 2010. The Financial Aid Office is no longer accepting the Augsburg Aid Form and the Federal Taxes for students enrolled in the Augsburg for Adults program.

The Financial Aid Office will provide an informational session to learn more about the financial aid process and the new loan process for 2010-2011.
