February 16: Mardi Gras Madrigals, Huzzah!

The Goliard Society of Medievalists invites you to celebrate Mardi Gras in medieval style. It's Mardi Gras Madrigals! Huzzah!

Mardi Gras Madrigals features jugglers and musicians, storytellers and poets, and a full medieval feast -- eaten without utensils, of course. Madrigal choirs from Saint Francis and Minnetonka high schools will sing, as well as the newly formed Augsburg Madrigal Singers. Beautiful music, good food and company, and plenty of silliness and merriment. Huzzah!

Mardi Gras Madrigals takes place next Tuesday, February 16th, in Hoversten Chapel. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $20, but are free for Augsburg students with a valid ID. (Space is limited and students still need to make a reservation.)

To purchase tickets or reserve your place, go to http://www.augsburg.edu/mardigras.

Iron Chef Winner Speaks, Shares Menu

I want to encourage all of you to participate in the 2nd Annual Iron Chef competition next year. Never having even heard of the reality TV show on which this was based, I still had a lot of fun planning our menu, making the meal and watching the judges at work.

The challenge was to make a meal in 60 minutes or less using a secret ingredient in the protein, the vegetable and the starch. We had half an hour to plan our strategy and could only use the ingredients, spices and cookware provided. Right before we started cooking, Jamison Cross, A’viands Retail Manager, brought out the secret ingredient, jicama.

Jicama is a crispy, sweet, edible root that resembles a turnip in physical appearance. It has a unique flavor that lends itself well to salads, salsas, and vegetable platters. I had never used jicama in a hot dish, but had eaten it raw. My team used it in our menu as follows:
--Pan-seared chicken breast with Italian herbs, lemon, garlic and black pepper, garnished with parsley, diced jicama and a lemon wedge.
--Red potatoes mashed with garlic, salt, butter and heavy cream. Julienned carrots and jicama, sautéed in butter, rested on top.
--Stuffed mushroom caps containing sautéed red and green pepper, jicama and garam masala. Covered with fresh parmesan cheese.

To our esteemed judges Executive Chef Brian Stansberry, day student body Vice President Ben Krause-Gagne, A'viands' Vice President, Rick Sorel, and Ann Garvey, Augsburg Vice President of Student Affairs—thank you. Jamison Cross, deserves a very honorable mention for planning, coordinating and hosting the competition. Not to mention getting the power back on after an outage! We couldn't have done any of it without A'viands staff who prepped, set up, assisted, and cleaned up. Thank you. I want to thank our worthy competitors and the audience, who came to witness our culinary foibles and cheered us on during the competition.

I'll be back next year to defend the title. So rev up the wok/oven/grill and study your cookbooks. If you don’t cook and are not even a wannabe chef, just come and watch the teams make a meal from scratch. See you next year! (In the meantime, check out the show on foodnetwork.com)

"Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" TODAY in WRC

It's Feminist Film Friday! Join us from 3:30-5:30 in the WRC (SVE 207) to watch "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes": "Sparking dialogue on hip-hop and its declarations on gender, HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes provides thoughtful insight from intelligent, divergent voices including rap artists, industry executives, rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop generation. The film includes interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D and Jadakiss and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons; along with commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Kevin Powell and Sarah Jones and interviews with young women at Spelman College, a historically black school and one of the nation's leading liberal arts institutions.

The film also explores such pressing issues as women and violence in rap music, representations of manhood in hip-hop culture, what today's rap lyrics reveal to their listeners and homoeroticism in hip-hop. A "loving critique" from a self-proclaimed "hip-hop head," HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes discloses the complex intersection of culture, commerce and gender through on-the-street interviews with aspiring rappers and fans at hip-hop events throughout the country."

Everyone is welcome! Free beverages are provided. So please join us...relax, watch, and discuss. Hope to see you there!
