Feminist Film Friday - Feb. 12

The Women's Resource Center would like to invite you to Feminist Film Friday on Feb. 12th from 3:30-5:30 in the WRC (SVE 207).

We will be watching "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes." "Sparking dialogue on hip-hop and its declarations on gender, HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes provides thoughtful insight from intelligent, divergent voices including rap artists, industry executives, rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop generation. The film includes interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D and Jadakiss and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons; along with commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Kevin Powell and Sarah Jones and interviews with young women at Spelman College, a historically black school and one of the nation's leading liberal arts institutions.

The film also explores such pressing issues as women and violence in rap music, representations of manhood in hip-hop culture, what today's rap lyrics reveal to their listeners and homoeroticism in hip-hop. A "loving critique" from a self-proclaimed "hip-hop head," HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes discloses the complex intersection of culture, commerce and gender through on-the-street interviews with aspiring rappers and fans at hip-hop events throughout the country."

Here are some additional details about the ensemble:

Founded in 1983 by Michael Levine, the Dallas Brass has become one of America's foremost musical ensembles. The Dallas Brass show, American Musical Journey, incorporates a full complement of brass and percussion for a musical travelogue through American history, from the time of George Washington to the present day. The program’s music has been selected from the masters – Copland, Bernstein, Gershwin, Berlin, Sousa; from bands like the Tijuana Brass and Chicago; and styles from Dixieland, swing, Broadway, folk, patriotic, pop, and even hip-hop!”

According to Mr. Levine, "a Dallas Brass concert is intended for the entire family. Our goal is to entertain and enrich by playing great music." The ensemble includes: Michael Levine (director, trombone), Daniel Rosenboom (trumpet), D.J. Barraclough and Charlie Porter (trumpet, alto horn), Mark Burroughs (tuba) and Jeff Handel (drums/percussion.)

In addition to their solo engagements, the Dallas Brass appears with symphony orchestras nationwide. Symphonic credits include the Cincinnati Pops conducted by Erich Kunzel, New York Pops conducted by Skitch Henderson, and the Philly Pops conducted by Peter Nero. The Dallas Brass has performed at Carnegie Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and has toured overseas to Europe and the Far East. They have shared the stage with the late Bob Hope, have performed for Presidents Gerald Ford and George H. W. Bush, have appeared on the CBS “Early Show,” and their music has been used numerous times on the television show, “The Young & The Restless.” The ensemble has released six recordings: Debut, Dallas Brass II, A Merry Christmas with Brass, Windborne, Nutcracker and American Musical Journey.

Auggies Earn NSCAA Academic Award

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/2/4/wsoc020410.aspx?path=wsoc

MINNEAPOLIS -- With a team grade-point average of 3.32, the Augsburg College women's soccer team earned a 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award, it was announced recently.

Both the Auggie women's soccer team (3.32 GPA) and Auggie men's soccer team (3.42 GPA) earned NSCAA Team Academic Awards, as one of 102 schools nationwide -- and one of five Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools -- to have both its men's and women's program earn the honor.

A total of 583 soccer teams (145 men, 338 women) posted a team grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2008-09 academic year.

It's the first time that Augsburg's women's soccer program, coached by Mike Navarre, has earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award.

Augsburg's women's soccer team was a success in the classroom in 2009. Six Auggies -- Gaby Hamerlinck, Whitney Holman, Lacey Hoover, Emily Sell, Becky Solheim and Lisa Weniger -- earned Academic All-MIAC honors, and Holman earned earned both NSCAA Scholar All-Region and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors for the second straight season.

Augsburg finished 6-7-5 overall, 3-6-2 in MIAC play in 2009 under 11th-season head coach Navarre.
