Seward Co-Op Grand Opening this Weekend

Seward Co-op will celebrate the grand opening of its new store on Sunday, April 26, from noon until 5 p.m. The event will take place in the co-op’s parking lot at 2823 E. Franklin Ave. The event will be in conjunction with Seward Co-op’s Eighth Annual Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) Fair, which will be held Saturday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Several local musicians, including the Brass Messengers, Chastity Brown, Beau Kinstler and Andrea Stern will perform:

12:00 to 1:30 - Beau Kinsler
1:30 to 3:00 - Chastity Brown
3:00 to 5:00 - The Brass Messengers

Harpist, Andrea Stern will perform in the front of the store throughout the Grand Opening.

Seward Co-op is also partnering with fellow Franklin Avenue business Articulture to offer creative activities for children involving art and food. An array of Seward-brand giveaways, food samples, cooking demonstrations and product information from many local producers will be featured. Many other Seward-area businesses will be offering special events and specials during the celebration.

During the event, we'll launch the Seward Co-op credit card in partnership with SPIRE Credit Union. The co-op will not directly profit from this credit card, but our endowment fund — the Seward Cooperative Community Fund (SCCF) — will receive a portion of the income that Spire collects.

Throughout the day, drawings will be held for attendees to receive garden rain barrels at a significantly reduced rate. This is made possible by a Mississippi Watershed Management Organization grant to Seward Redesign.

For co-op history buffs, tours of an exhibit of the history of co-ops, authored by local co-op enthusiast Marty Brown, will be offered, as well.

The Grand Opening event is free and open to everyone.

Celebrate Spring at the Silkesnas Preserve

Silkesnas (silk-es-nas) is a privately owned Nature Preserve near Spring Valley, Wisconsin (just one hour from Augsburg!). On April 26, 2009, from 1-5 p.m., Silkesnas will hold its annual Spring in the Valley event. Many activities are held out of doors, and walking on natural terrain of light difficulty is required. Visitors should plan to spend approximately two hours to take in all of the activities including viewing the natural beauty of the area and visiting with and learning from the various subject matter experts volunteering at the Preserve. Our programs appeal to those who believe in being part of the solution, those that are looking for opportunities to lead positive change.

This year's theme is "A Parade of Healthy Homes." Around the preserve, visitors will get the opportunity to see and hear about the homes of some of the wild animals in the area (bear, coyotes, birds). There will be opportunities for planting trees and prairie restoration, important in maintaining healthy habitat. In the Visitor Center, there will be presentations on human habitat. LEED certified green buildings will be presented by Mark Paschke from Frisbie Architects Inc., conducting indoor health assessments will be presented by Oram Miller- Certified Building Biology Environmental Inspector from Create Healthy Homes Inc., and sustainable landscape principles and practices will be presented by Randy Nyeggen of Environmental Landscape Inc. An authentic Native American teepee will be on site, with local area Boy Scout Troup 145 on hand to explain the history and technical aspects of this early human home. A local area vendor fair will be on site, featuring items like honey, maple syrup, soaps, breads and more.

Spring in the Valley is produced and sponsored entirely by volunteers. The Silkesnas Preserve is located west of Spring Valley, WI on County Road CC; 1/3 mile south of the intersection of Highway 29 and county Road CC. Look for signs, and park on the roadside. See http://www.silkesnas.org for more details. At Silkesnas, "We leverage Wisconsin's landscape to nurture the landscape of the human heart."

58% To My Goal

Please support me in solidarity with Jessica Nathanson, Kristin Anderson, and many other Auggies, as I walk in the Breast Cancer 3-Day. On the weekend of August 21-23, thousands of women and men will unite and walk 60 miles through the Twin Cities. The Breast Cancer 3-Day is a weekend of hope, as we honor lives lost, celebrate survivors, promote breast cancer research and help bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it.

The support that the Augsburg campus has shown thus far has been outstanding! Together, we have raised $1,325.01 and counting! I have a goal of $2,300 to reach before August! Would you consider donating $20 today?

Net proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefits Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs, as well as the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, which provides an endowment for breast cancer initiatives.

Please read my story and consider donating at: http://www.the3day.org/goto/emilyrandall
