Celebrate Spring at the Silkesnas Preserve

Silkesnas (silk-es-nas) is a privately owned Nature Preserve near Spring Valley, Wisconsin (just one hour from Augsburg!). On April 26, 2009, from 1-5 p.m., Silkesnas will hold its annual Spring in the Valley event. Many activities are held out of doors, and walking on natural terrain of light difficulty is required. Visitors should plan to spend approximately two hours to take in all of the activities including viewing the natural beauty of the area and visiting with and learning from the various subject matter experts volunteering at the Preserve. Our programs appeal to those who believe in being part of the solution, those that are looking for opportunities to lead positive change.

This year's theme is "A Parade of Healthy Homes." Around the preserve, visitors will get the opportunity to see and hear about the homes of some of the wild animals in the area (bear, coyotes, birds). There will be opportunities for planting trees and prairie restoration, important in maintaining healthy habitat. In the Visitor Center, there will be presentations on human habitat. LEED certified green buildings will be presented by Mark Paschke from Frisbie Architects Inc., conducting indoor health assessments will be presented by Oram Miller- Certified Building Biology Environmental Inspector from Create Healthy Homes Inc., and sustainable landscape principles and practices will be presented by Randy Nyeggen of Environmental Landscape Inc. An authentic Native American teepee will be on site, with local area Boy Scout Troup 145 on hand to explain the history and technical aspects of this early human home. A local area vendor fair will be onsite, featuring items like honey, maple syrup, soaps, breads and more.

Spring in the Valley is produced and sponsored entirely by volunteers. The Silkesnas Preserve is located west of Spring Valley, WI on County Road CC; 1/3 mile south of the intersection of Highway 29 and county Road CC. Look for signs, and park on the roadside. See http://www.silkesnas.org for more details. At Silkesnas, "We leverage Wisconsin's landscape to nurture the landscape of the human heart."
