Disability Awareness Month News

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

Center for Learning and Adaptive Student Services (CLASS)

The Center for Learning and Adaptive Student Services (CLASS) illustrates its commitment to students by providing services and accommodations to individuals with learning, attentional, psychiatric or other cognitive disabilities. The foundation of CLASS is deeply rooted in the promotion of student independence and the personal realization of one’s full potential.
In CLASS you’ll find individualized services provided by highly-skilled professionals, along with a range of individualized accommodations, including current assistive technology. As an Augsburg student, you’ll be part of a small yet diverse college community located in the heart of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. You will also be part of a community that is aware and accepting of students with disabilities; CLASS serves an average of between 120 and 170 students each year.

CLASS Mission Statement
To assist academically qualified students with disabilities to reach their individual potential, to promote their independence, and to ensure their access to the educational experience at Augsburg College.

CLASS Staff
The CLASS staff includes a Director, Disability Specialists, an Accommodations Specialist, and an Administrative Assistant, all experienced in serving students with disabilities. The Accommodations Specialist provides students with testing accommodations, note-taking services, taped textbooks and supervises the computer lab. CLASS also employs many student workers, some of whom receive CLASS support.

CLASS Services
Accommodations may include:
Scanned exams
Extended time exams
Readers for exams
Scribes for exams
Note takers in class
Recorded, scanned or electronic textbooks
Access to adaptive technology (such as speech recognition software and scanner/screen readers)

Disability Specialists provide:
Determination of appropriate accommodations
Individual support
Instruction in learning strategies and compensatory techniques
Help with time management and organizational skills
Academic advising.

Community Organizing with Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry and the Lilly Grant are teaming up to sponsor some workshops on faith-based community organizing. Our first session is next Thursday, October 30, at 6:30 p.m.in the East Commons. We will be learning from Lyle Griner, National Director of Peer Ministry, about inviting and welcoming.

Many of us spend time working in organizations across the campus that are dear to our heart, but sometimes we have a hard time getting the message across to others. This time will be spent learning how to approach folks, invite them into programs or activities, and make folks feel welcome.

All are welcome to attend. These will help your organizations greatly!

2008 Presidential Holiday Procedure

As you know, President Pribbenow announced five paid Presidential Holidays for staff in addition to the three official paid holidays (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day). The Presidential Holidays must be taken between December 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009. The following explains the guidelines and procedures for staff requesting and reporting the additional holidays.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

How can I request the President Holidays?
•See your supervisor. Your supervisor is coordinating the support needs of your area with your divisional vice president. Your supervisor must pre-authorize and pre-schedule your request accordingly so that our campus remains open and accessible.

When can I take these days?
•Between December 1, 2008 and January 31, 2009
•Days must be used in whole day increments
•Preferential consideration will be given for December 26, 29-30-31 and January 2
•Time not used will expire and there is no accrual for this time, nor is overtime earned in a week when a Presidential Holiday is used

How do I report the Presidential Holidays used?
. Be sure to report the days used on your time sheet or absence report as “PH” for “Presidential Holiday”
•Submit your supervisor for final approval
•If you work less than full-time, your paid time will be pro-rated based on your FTE (just like treatment of other holidays)

Questions?
•Please contact your supervisor or Human Resources at x1058

Host an International Student for a Thanksgiving Meal

It's that time of year. I'm looking for Augsburg faculty/staff who would be interested in hosting an international student (or several!) for a Thanksgiving meal.

If you would like to host, just send me a note and I'll set things up. Helpful information to have in advance would be - 1) the number of students you would like to invite, 2) approximate time of the meal and, 3) if you are able to provide transportation to your home and back to campus.

Best regards, Jim Trelstad-Porter

Keeping Track of Auggies

Richard Webb is Leaving Augsburg

Richard Webb has accepted a position with South Washington County Public Schools as a Diversity Educator. His last day will be Friday, Oct. 31.

He has laid a foundation for the work that will continue in the Admissions Office.
Please join us on Friday, Oct, 31 from 2:30-4 p.m. in the Marshall Room to say farewell to Richard. We will be sharing our favorite stories of Richard at 3 p.m.
