Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs Information

There will be two upcoming information sessions about the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs that may be of interest to Augsburg students. These sessions cover our graduate programs in Public Policy (MPP) and Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) and will be held on the following dates:

Monday, October 6, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Wednesday, November 5, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Tuesday, November 18, 2008 from 12:00 to 1:30 PM
Tuesday, December 2, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM

Biology Colloquium TONIGHT

Kevin Potts, adjunct professor of Biology and Consultant to the South China Tiger Advisory Office (SCTAO) of the Minnesota Zoo will give a talk entitled: "The Apes of the Mountains of the Moon: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation of Chimpanzees in Uganda"

Field primatology, the study of the behavior, ecology, and conservation of wild non-human primates, is historically rooted in several academic disciplines, including anthropology, biology, and psychology. This interdisciplinary foundation resulted in a vast array of field studies of numerous primate taxa, representing a correspondingly wide biogeographic spectrum. In this talk, he will discuss how this proliferation of research led to a growing appreciation of the extent to which behavior and ecology can vary both among and within primate species. He will also introduce some of his own research, which he conduct in Kibale National Park, Uganda, and which centers on identifying the environmental underpinnings of demographic and behavioral variability in chimpanzees. Finally, he will discuss the status of wild chimpanzee populations and the role of researchers in their long-term conservation.

This seminar will take place on Wednesday, September 17 at 7 p.m. in SCI 123. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

The University of Minnesota will be having their annual Graduate and Professional School Day on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. The event will be held in Coffman Union, Great Hall, and is FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!

Graduate and Professional School Day is a great way to connect with a large number of graduate schools without leaving campus! About 100 graduate/professional programs and 900 students participate. Take advantage of this opportunity to explore grad school options.

HOW TO PREPARE
Follow these tips to make the most of this event:

Look at the list of participating schools (see below) and check out their Web sites to identify programs that interest you. Prioritize your list of schools to make effective use of your time at the event. Dress appropriately: first impressions count! Business casual is the recommended attire. Bring questions for the schools (e.g., What are your course offerings?) and be prepared to answer questions (e.g., Why do you want to attend graduate school?). Bring a pen, and if you share your contact info, be sure to write legibly! Grad school recruiters sometimes mention they can't follow up with students because they can't read their writing. Consider bringing your own mailing labels to affix to forms.

Computational Physics Seminar Series

Are you interested in how computers are used to solve challenging problems of biophysics and materials science? Thursday nights we will discuss these issues and have hands on demonstrations of computational tools and techniques. Contact Ben Stottrup (stottrup@augsburg.edu) if you are interested.

Ten People Needed for Weight Watchers

Our weight watchers at work group has some great successes over the past year and we want to continue that success and enable others to share in weight loss success but we need at least 10 more interested staff, faculty or students to continue the group on campus.

The new 17 week session is scheduled to start on Sept. 23. The cost is $186 and can be paid in a lump sum, on a credit card or cash or in three installments of $62 each.

We must have payment by this Friday if you plan to join the new session. Recovery Month Tidbits

"NA is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. We … meet regularly to help each other stay clean. ... We are not interested in what or how much you used ... but only in what you want to do about your problem and how we can help."

Membership is open to all drug addicts, regardless of the particular drug or combination of drugs used. When adapting AA’s First Step, the word “addiction” was substituted for “alcohol,” thus removing drug-specific language and reflecting the “disease concept” of addiction.

Narcotics Anonymous provides a recovery process and support network inextricably linked together. One of the keys to NA’s success is the therapeutic value of addicts working with other addicts. Members share their successes and challenges in overcoming active addiction and living drug-free productive lives through the application of the principles contained within the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of NA. These principles are the core of the Narcotics Anonymous recovery program. Principles incorporated within the steps include:
• admitting there is a problem;
• seeking help;
• engaging in a thorough self-examination;
• confidential self-disclosure;
• making amends for harm done; and
• helping other drug addicts who want to recover.

Central to the Narcotics Anonymous program is its emphasis on practicing spiritual principles. Narcotics Anonymous itself is non-religious, and each member is encouraged to cultivate an individual understanding—religious or not—of this “spiritual awakening.”

NA has only one mission: to provide an environment in which addicts can help one another stop using drugs and find a new way to live.

Snackin' with the Senate

Hungry in between classes? Need to voice your thoughts? Join WEC Senate for Snackin' with the Senate, Saturday September 20!

From 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Christensen Center, the WEC Senators will be offering treats and an opportunity to share your opinion about campus issues. This week, WEC Senate will be joined by a representative from A'viands, our food service provider, and Sarah Griesse, the Dean of Students.

Snackin' with the Senate will be offered once a month as an outreach to all adult students who are interested in getting involved and sharing their thoughts about their time at Augsburg.

What's Your First Word of the Day?

Make your first words meaningful and share your thoughts with fellow students, faculty, and staff.

Campus Ministry and Augsburg for Adults invites you to share in the First Word Community Gathering every class Saturday in the Foss Atrium. We have two times: 7:30-7:50 AM (for students who have 8:00 classes or want to secure a parking spot) and 8:00-8:20 AM (for students with 8:30 classes and who still want to secure a parking spot).

Throughout the academic year, we will be focusing on the four bases of an Augsburg community faith practice: Identifying Yourself as an 'Auggie', Making a Commitment to Gather, Making a Commitment to Involvement in the Broader Community, and Making a Commitment to Global Citizenship and Environmental Stewardship. Each session will be lead by a guest speaker.

For our first session this Saturday, September 20, Jessica Fox-Wilson will be speaking on "Growing Your Garden."

The First Word Community Gathering will be a non-denominational, informal setting where all are welcome to share muffins, coffee, good conversation, and music.

That's Not Garbage; Recycle!

If you have not noticed yet, all of the cups, plates, plastic wear, napkins, straws, and to-go containers being used at Coopers Coffee Shop, Nabo, and Murphy's are biodegradable, compostable, or recyclable. So when you are done, make sure you move past the trash and help make Augsburg a little greener by recycling. Oh, and keep an eye out for our composting venture with Augsburg starting on the Sept. 22. Hey, who said, "It's not easy being green?"

Credit Refund Dates

Credit refund checks for our Augsburg for Adult program and our Graduate programs will become available for pick up on September 19. For our Day program, credit refund checks will be available on September 26. Checks will be available for pick up after 1pm at the Enrollment Center. Please view your student account online through Records and Registration the day of to see if a credit refund check has been issued before coming to the Enrollment Center. Thank you

Spanish Conversation this Thurs.

You are invited to attend a Spanish conversation group that will meet every Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the Augsburg room, on the 2nd floor of the Christensen Center. Drop in for 10 mins. or for the whole 90 mins. - whatever works for you! Whether you're fluent in Spanish or just starting a beginning class, this will be a good practice experience. Do You Need Flex Dollars?

Do you need to purchase Flex Dollars to add to your Student Card?

If so, Flex Points can only be purchased Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Commons Cafeteria. Please make sure you bring your Student ID card for verification. If you haven't received an ID from Enrollment Services, please do so immediately or bring another form of Identification with you.

Purchases of Flex Points may take up to 24 hours to reflect changes. Flex Points can be used at Commons Cafeteria, Cooper's Coffee Shop, Nabo: A Neighborhood Cafe, and Murphy's Grille.

John Zobitz, Mathematics, Presents at NDSU

Dr. John Zobitz, Assistant Professor of Mathematics presented "Process-based ecosystem modeling using satellite and tower-based biophysical measurements" as one of the two invited keynote speakers at the 2nd Annual Undergraduate Research Poster Session at North Dakota State University on Thursday, Sept. 11.
