Fac Dev Grant Funds -- Apply by Oct. 1

Interested in learning from your colleagues who teach abroad? Curious about how to incorporate faith and vocation into your teaching? Please consider applying for the Lilly Faculty Development Grant offered through the Office of International Programs!

The purpose of the grant is to give Augsburg faculty professional development opportunities at Center for Global Education sites, participating in study abroad programs that include reflection on faith and vocation in a global context. This can be done in the context of the CGE professional development seminar taking place summer 2009, by participating as a co-leader on an existing Augsburg Abroad faculty-led program to a CGE site, or by attending one of the open trips that CGE advertises.

All Augsburg faculty are eligible, but preference will be given to faculty who have not yet led a study abroad program to a CGE site, but are considering proposing a program. Preference will also be given to faculty in disciplines that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. science, math).

The grant covers travel costs for three faculty members in the calendar year 2009, up to $2000 per person. The application is available in the Office of International Programs public file, under “Lilly Funding Applications.” The deadline to apply is October 1, 2008.

Recovery Month Tidbits

The Serenity Prayer is the common name for an originally untitled prayer, most commonly attributed to the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, but many theories of other authors have been identified. The prayer has been adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous and other twelve-step programs.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things that I cannot be change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Composting Is More than a Pile of Garbage

On September 22, Augsburg Dining, in a joint effort with Augsburg College, will begin composting upstairs in the commons. All of the food that is left over from our customers will be placed into special containers located adjacent to the trash receptacles. There will be posters up to help in the instruction of what is to go where. Over time, this effort will expand to the other retail food locations and then campus wide. The Augsburg community will be happy to know that the end product of this composting will return the the Augsburg community garden. So please look before you throw away that half eaten sandwich and see if it can't further our environmental awareness and give back to us all.

Winford Named to D3Football.com Team of the Week

Augsburg's Royce Winford named to D3Football.com Team of the Week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/091708winford.html

MINNEAPOLIS (9/17/08) -- Augsburg College wide receiver Royce Winford (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) was named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week for his efforts on both sides of the ball in Augsburg's 30-24, two-overtime win over No. 20-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) on Saturday at Edor Nelson Field, it was announced on Wednesday. It marks Winford's second award of the week, after being named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Playing both wide receiver on offense and cornerback on defense, Winford caught eight passes for 87 yards, while also recording three tackles, an interception and a pass breakup on defense. He caught two key touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime. On a 4th-down-and-goal play from the 2-yard line, Winford caught a touchdown pass with 4:02 left in the fourth quarter, then intercepted a pass on defense on Wartburg's ensuing drive. In the first overtime, Winford caught a 15-yard scoring pass.

On the season, Winford has caught 18 passes for 195 yards (97.5 ypg) and four touchdowns. In his career, he now has 172 catches for 2,338 yards and 28 touchdowns, moving into a tie for second place in school history in career touchdowns and career receiving yardage, while standing in third place in career receptions.

This week's award marks the third time that Winford has been named to the national Team of the Week by D3Football.com, a national web site that covers NCAA Division III football. He was named twice last season -- on Oct. 24, after catching an Augsburg and MIAC record 20 passes in a win over Carleton; and on Oct. 31, after a 17-catch, 206-yard performance in a win over Gustavus.

Augsburg is now 2-0 on the season, marking the first time Augsburg has started 2-0 since the 1999 campaign. Augsburg is idle this weekend, and returns to action with its Homecoming game against St. Olaf on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.
