Removal Of Window Air Conditioners

Biology Colloquium -- Wednesday, Sept. 17
Kevin Potts, adjunct professor of Biology and Consultant to the South China Tiger Advisory Office (SCTAO) of the Minnesota Zoo will give a talk entitled: "The Apes of the Mountains of the Moon: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation of Chimpanzees in Uganda"
Field primatology, the study of the behavior, ecology, and conservation of wild non-human primates, is historically rooted in several academic disciplines, including anthropology, biology, and psychology. This interdisciplinary foundation resulted in a vast array of field studies of numerous primate taxa, representing a correspondingly wide biogeographic spectrum. In this talk, he will discuss how this proliferation of research led to a growing appreciation of the extent to which behavior and ecology can vary both among and within primate species. He will also introduce some of his own research, which he conduct in Kibale National Park, Uganda, and which centers on identifying the environmental underpinnings of demographic and behavioral variability in chimpanzees. Finally, he will discuss the status of wild chimpanzee populations and the role of researchers in their long-term conservation.
This seminar will take place on Wednesday, September 17 at 7:00 p.m. in SCI 123. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Lilly Fac Dev Grant -- Apply by Oct. 1
Interested in learning from your colleagues who teach abroad? Curious how to incorporate faith and vocation into your teaching? Please consider applying for the Lilly Faculty Development Grant offered through the Office of International Programs.
The purpose of the grant is to provide Augsburg faculty with an opportunity to participate in professional development opportunities at Center for Global Education sites that include reflection on faith and vocation in a global context. This can be done in the context of the CGE professional development seminar taking place summer 2009, by participating as a co-leader on an existing Augsburg Abroad faculty-led program to a CGE site, or by attending one of the open trips that CGE advertises.
All Augsburg faculty are eligible, but preference will be given to faculty who have not yet led a study abroad program to a CGE site, but are considering proposing a program. Preference will also be given to faculty in disciplines that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. science, math).
The grant covers travel costs for three faculty members in the calendar year 2009, up to $2000 per person. The application is available in the Office of International Programs public file, under “Lilly Funding Applications.” The deadline to apply is October 1, 2008.
Charter Schools -- What Do They Mean for Augsburg?
Have you heard of Charter Schools but are not sure what they are? Did you know that Augsburg College sponsors several charter schools? What does that mean? How could Augsburg students become more involved with helping with the success of the students in these school? Come on by to find out the answer to all of these questions on September 17 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the East commons of Christensen Center. This is a bring-your-own-lunch event. Representatives and students from the schools we sponsor will be there as well to answer any specific questions you might have about any particular school. There is a great deal of misinformation regarding charter schools so this is an opportunity to get it straight. Cheers!
Drummers and Bassists Needed -- MUE129 Rock and Improv
The Rock & Improvisation ensemble (MUE 129). Is still accepting students of all experience levels. Currently we are in need of drummers and bassists - Horn players and Vocalists would be great too! That way we can break into smaller ensembles.
After our first meeting yesterday we have begun sorting out a repertoire list, so far it includes works by: Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, The Beatles, Metallica, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Queen, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Robert Plant & Allison Kraus, Led Zeppelin, Coheed and Cambria, Phish, and some originals.
The Workshop meetings are currently held on Wednesdays between 1:20-2:20 p.m. and 2:30-3:30 p.m. in Room M16 of the Music Building. Contact Christian McGuire mcguire@augsburg.edu if interested.

Under the direction of a seasoned Twin Cities professional bassist & Musicologist, MUE 129 is a contemporary Band Workshop which provides students with a unique opportunity to develop their own creative musical voice within a collaborative environment. Students attend one workshop per week in which they play and discuss issues regarding performance practice in live and studio settings, improvisational and stylistic techniques, make transcriptions, write compositions etc. Then during the week, the students break off into smaller ensembles to practice repertoire with approved access to an ensemble practice room. The repertoire is varied and include a wide range of contemporary musical styles, Rock, Folk, Jazz, Country, Latin, African, Trance, Jam-band, Motown/Stax style horn bands, Indian, Fusion, Dixieland, Arabic Maqamat, and many more!
Students will be expected to master about 45 minutes (i.e. 1 set) worth of music each semester and will culminate in a recorded live concert at the end of the semester.

Writing Lab Opens Monday, Sept. 15
The Augsburg College Writing Lab will open for fall semester/trimester on Monday, Sept. 15. The Lab is located on the main level of Lindell Library, just left of the circulation desk. No appointments are taken; just appear with your assignment in hand!
Fall hours:
Monday: 6:30 - 9 pm
Tuesday: 3-5:30 pm and 7:30 - 10 pm
Wednesday: 3-5:30 pm and 6:30 - 9 pm
Thursday: 3-5:30 pm and 7:30 - 10 pm
Friday: 4:30 - 7 pm
Sunday: 5:30 - 8 pm

Student Academic Year Research Funding
Applications for student/faculty research funding during the 08-09 academic school year are available from the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) by contacting Dixie Shafer. Grants of up to $1,000 for research within this academic year will be awarded. Applicants are encouraged to submit proposals NOW, even if applying for spring funding.
Applications are accepted and awards are made on a rolling basis; therefore it is to the applicants' advantage to apply EARLY in the academic year. The URGO Advisory Committee, comprised of faculty members and the URGO Director, will begin reviewing proposals and making funding decisions as early as the week of Monday, September 15th, so items should be turned in by THIS Friday to be considered as soon as possible.

Since the first mass production of the Fender Precision Bass in 1951, the Electric Bass is arguably the single most important contribution to the development of popular music in the mid-late 20th century. Without its invention, Rock and other popular forms never would have evolved the way they did in the 1960s. Today the electric bass is used in a wealth of traditions around the world and benefits from a growing repertoire by classical composers.

Student Conference Travel Funding

ABO/MBA Twins Game Event, Sept. 23 (Twins vs. W. Sox)
The Augsburg Business Organization invites you to our first MBA / ABO social networking event of this year on Tuesday, September 23rd. ABO is an Augsburg student organization which is dedicated to making connections with students and the Twin Cities business community. We'll meet at 6:00 p.m. and then head down to the game via light rail for a 7:10 game against the Chicago White Sox. (Note: If you wish, you can also arrange to pick up your tickets ahead of time and / or meet us at the dome.) This is a great chance to socialize with your fellow Augsburg Business students; both MBA and undergraduates along with faculty and staff. Note: this event is open all Augsburg students, faculty and staff!
The cost for this ABO sponsored event is $5 for Augsburg students, faculty and staff which includes a lower-level left field ticket which normally has a $20 face value. No Card, No Eat
It is vital for you to bring your card when you come to eat. Whether you are using flex dollars or board, it is for your safety that you use your card. Others around you can hear your number and then use up all of your points. We have requested that all cashiers ask for a card in order to best serve you. So when the cashier asks for your card, remember that it is in your best interest and safety.

Don't Bring Your Own Cups
Augsburg Dining request that you use the cups that are provided for you. When you bring your own cups that are often larger than the ones that we provide, the cost to fill those up are two to three times as much as the ones provided for you. That begins to add up and eats away at the over all cost to provide Augsburg with great food and service. So please just use the cups that are provided for you. Thank you, Augsburg Dining management.
Weight Watchers Works at Augsburg
Looking for a supportive weight loss group and the convenience of the group being right at work? Look no further. Join Weight Watchers at Work at Augsburg at an Open House on Tuesday, September 16 from 2 - 3:00 p.m. in Lindell Library 301. Weight Watchers will begin a 17 week series on Tuesday September 23rd.
Weight Watchers is also introducing its Lose for Good campaign. Now through October 18th for every pound of weight lost by Weight Watchers members a donation of the equivalent of a pound of food (up to a million dollars) will be donated to two organizations: Action Against Hunger and Share our Strength. So you will not only be doing something good for yourself but helping others in need, too.
Cost for the 17 weeks is $186 which is a discounted rate for at-work groups. You can pay in three installments or one lump sum and by cash, check or credit card.

Fall Day Registration Deadlines
Faculty, we are approaching 10th day for Fall Day which means Tuesday, Sept. 16, is the last day for students to drop without notation or add a course with your signature. I encourage you to check your class lists for accuracy now. Remember the official class is on AugNet Records and Registration, not Moodle. I am sure a gentle reminder from you to a student who is not registered correctly to process a drop-add prior to the COB Tuesday will be greatly appreciated and possibly prevent a difficult registration issue from developing for them. Do You Need Flex Dollars?
Do you need to purchase Flex Dollars to add to your Student Card?
If so, Flex Points can only be purchased Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Commons Cafeteria. Please make sure you bring your Student ID card for verification. If you haven't received an ID from Enrollment Services, please do so immediately or bring another form of Identification with you.
Purchases of Flex Points may take up to 24 hours to reflect changes. Flex Points can be used at Commons Cafeteria, Cooper's Coffee Shop, Nabo: A Neighborhood Cafe, and Murphy's Grille.

Staff $3.50 Lunch Is Legally $3.75
It seems that Sodexo was charging a staff lunch without filling the legal tax required by Minnesota State and federal tax laws. Because as staff, we are not tax exempt, we have to be charged the proper .0715 on all purchases, causing the $3.50 lunch to become $3.75 with tax. Once again, Augsburg dining would like to apologize for this confusion and would like to thank you for your business. You make us possible.
Credit Refund Dates for the Fall
Credit refund checks for our Augsburg for Adult program and our Graduate programs will become available for pick up on September 19th. For our Day program, credit refund checks will be available on September 26th. Checks will be available for pick up after 1pm at the Enrollment Center. Please view your student account online through Records and Registration the day of to see if a credit refund check has been issued before coming to the Enrollment Center. Thank you!
Last Chance -- Scholarship Meeting for TRiO Students
Last change for students to attend and apply for the TRiO/SSS scholarship!!!! There is one last scholarship meeting being held Monday, September 15 from 8am-9am. The meeting will be in the basement of Christensen Center in the Century Room. To qualify for the scholarship students must be full-time, accepted into TRIO/SSS, and receive a Pell grant. THE SCHOLARSHIP MEETING IS REQUIRED INORDER THE QULAIFY AND GET THE SCHOLARSHIP NOT EXCPETIONS!!!
