Teaching and Learning

Oct. 1 Deadline: Lilly Faculty Developmen tGrant

Interested in learning from your colleagues who teach abroad? Curious how to incorporate faith and vocation into your teaching? Please consider applying for the Lilly Faculty Development Grant offered through the Office of International Programs.

The purpose of the grant is to provide Augsburg faculty with an opportunity to participate in professional development opportunities at Center for Global Education sites that include reflection on faith and vocation in a global context. This can be done in the context of the CGE professional development seminar taking place summer 2009, by participating as a co-leader on an existing Augsburg Abroad faculty-led program to a CGE site, or by attending one of the open trips that CGE advertises.

All Augsburg faculty are eligible, but preference will be given to faculty who have not yet led a study abroad program to a CGE site, but are considering proposing a program. Preference will also be given to faculty in disciplines that are under-represented in study abroad (i.e. science, math).

The grant covers travel costs for three faculty members in the calendar year 2009, up to $2000 per person. The application is available in the Office of International Programs public file, under "Lilly Funding Applications." The deadline to apply is October 1, 2008.

Biology Colloquium -- Wednesday, September 17

Kevin Potts, adjunct professor of Biology and Consultant to the South China Tiger Advisory Office (SCTAO) of the Minnesota Zoo will give a talk entitled: "The Apes of the Mountains of the Moon: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation of Chimpanzees in Uganda"

Field primatology, the study of the behavior, ecology, and conservation of wild non-human primates, is historically rooted in several academic disciplines, including anthropology, biology, and psychology. This interdisciplinary foundation resulted in a vast array of field studies of numerous primate taxa, representing a correspondingly wide biogeographic spectrum. In this talk, he will discuss how this proliferation of research led to a growing appreciation of the extent to which behavior and ecology can vary both among and within primate species. He will also introduce some of his own research, which he conduct in Kibale National Park, Uganda, and which centers on identifying the environmental underpinnings of demographic and behavioral variability in chimpanzees. Finally, he will discuss the status of wild chimpanzee populations and the role of researchers in their long-term conservation.

This seminar will take place on Wednesday, September 17 at 7 p.m. in SCI 123. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Seminary and Divinity School Fair Sept. 25 at Gustavus

If you are interested in exploring a possible vocation as a pastor, lay ministry professional, religion professor, AIM, or deacon, then you will want to check out the Seminary & Divinity School Fair held on September 25 at Gustavus Adolphus College. Augsburg will be brining a contingent of students to visit with representatives from nearly 20 top-notch schools, participate in break-out sessions that explore the possibilities of a seminary or divinity school education, and talk with current students and recent alumni about their experiences.

We will depart Augsburg at 8 a.m. and return at about 5p.m. The day begins with chapel at Gustavus, followed by a welcome and introductory comments. A lunch, featuring Augsburg MIS professor and pastor, Lee Clarke will happen mid-day breakout sessions in the afternoon. All day long, representatives from seminaries and divinity schools will be on hand to answer questions about programs and vocational opportunities.

This day is an important way to explore possibilities with people who want to help you find your best fit for a school, a career, and a vocation. Students who are just "checking it out" are encouraged to attend as well.

The registration deadline is Friday. To register, email Ross Murray at murray@augsburg.edu.

Green Fact of the Day

What is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? It happens to be the planet's largest landfill...and it's floating in the North Pacific Ocean (to be exact roughly in an area between 135 to 155 degrees W and 35 to 42 degrees N). Thanks to swirling ocean currents, much of the world's trash has accumulated into this part of the Pacific Ocean. How much trash? According to HowStuffWorks.com, every square mile of ocean hosts 46,000 pieces of floating plastic and plastic constitutes 90 percent of all trash floating in the world's oceans.

Recovery Month Tidbits

Narcotics Anonymous sprang from the Alcoholics Anonymous Program of the late 1940s, with meetings first emerging in the Los Angeles area of California, USA, in the early Fifties. The NA program started as a small US movement that has grown into one of the world's oldest and largest organizations of its type.

For many years, NA grew very slowly, spreading from Los Angeles to other major North American cities and Australia in the early 1970s. In 1983, Narcotics Anonymous published its self-titled Basic Text book, which contributed to tremendous growth. Within a few years, groups had formed in Brazil, Colombia, Germany, India, the Irish Republic, Japan, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Today, Narcotics Anonymous is well established throughout much of the Americas, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Newly formed groups and NA communities are now scattered throughout the Indian subcontinent, Africa, East Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Narcotics Anonymous books and information pamphlets are currently available in 34 languages, with translations in process for 16 languages.

Tray-less Tuesday

Tray-less Tuesdays are here again. Just a reminder that in a joint effort with Augsburg, Augsburg Dining is removing the trays to help in the prevention of wasting food. In the coming weeks, Augsburg College will begin the compostable collection of food and compostable products. Starting on the 22nd, you'll see new trash bins and posters talking about what is compostable and what is not. As a community it is our responsibility to help the environment in any way that we can. Composting is one of the easiest ways to do that. So when you find out that you eyes were bigger than your stomach, find the compostable bins and let nature reuse the food.

Augsburg Rotaract -- Rotary for our Generation

Rotary is a worldwide organization of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary clubs, known as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. There are 33,000 Rotary clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Clubs are nonpolitical, nonreligious, and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. As signified by the motto Service Above Self, Rotary's main objective is service -- in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world.

Rotoract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18-30. Rotoract clubs are either community or university based, and they're sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary. As one of Rotary's most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 7000 clubs in about 163 countries and geographical areas, Rotoract has become a worldwide phenomenom.

Rotoracts work to address their communities physical and social needs while promoting international understanding and peace through a framework of friendship and service. Possibilities for rotoractors are endless, including Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, becoming Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholars or Group Study Exchange members, and many more.

We are trying to start an Augsburg Rotaract, which would be sponsored by the Minneapolis Rotary. If you are interested at all or would like to learn more about Rotary and the networking possibilities associate with Rotoract please contact:

Don't Bring Your Own Cups

Augsburg Dining Commons request that you use the cups in the commons that are provided for you. When you bring your own cup upstairs that are often larger than the ones that we provide in the commons, the cost to fill those up are two to three times as much as the ones provided for you. That begins to add up and eats away at the over all cost to provide Augsburg with great food and service. So please just use the cups that are provided for you. Thank you, Augsburg Dining management.

Staff $3.50 Lunch Legally $3.75

It seems that Sodexo was charging a staff lunch without filling the legal tax required by Minnesota State and federal tax laws. Because as staff, we are not tax exempt, we have to be charged the proper .0715 on all purchases, causing the $3.50 lunch to become $3.75 with tax. Once again, Augsburg dining would like to apologize for this confusion and would like to thank you for your business. You make us possible.

Winford, Haglund Named MIAC Athletes of the Week

Augsburg's Royce Winford, Brent Haglund named MIAC Athletes of the Week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/091508miac.html

MINNEAPOLIS (9/15/08) -- Augsburg College football player Royce Winford (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) and men's cross country runner Brent Haglund (JR, Fridley, Minn.) were named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week in their respective sports, it was announced on Monday.

In football, Winford earned MIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts on both sides of the ball in Augsburg's 30-24, two-overtime win over No. 20-ranked Wartburg (Iowa) on Saturday at Edor Nelson Field. Playing both wide receiver on offense and cornerback on defense, Winford caught eight passes for 87 yards, while also recording three tackles, an interception and a pass breakup on defense.

He caught two key touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime. On a 4th-down-and-goal play from the 2-yard line, Winford caught a touchdown pass with 4:02 left in the fourth quarter, then intercepted a pass on defense on Wartburg's ensuing drive. In the first overtime, Winford caught a 15-yard scoring pass. On the season, Winford has caught 18 passes for 195 yards (97.5 ypg) and four touchdowns. In his career, he now has 172 catches for 2,338 yards and 28 touchdowns, moving into a tie for second place in school history in career touchdowns and career receiving yardage, while standing in third place in career receptions.

In men's cross country, Haglund was named MIAC Co-Athlete of the Week, sharing the weekly honor with Bethel's Dan Greeno. At the Tufts University Jumbo Invitational on Saturday in Grafton, Mass., Haglund finished first ahead of 84 runners on the wet, hilly fields of the Tufts Veterinary School course on a hot and humid day in Grafton. Haglund's time of 26:42.76 established a course record on the new eight-kilometer course, as he beat out the second-place runner by 28 seconds in the Auggies' first 8,000-meter race of the season.

An NCAA Division III All-Central Region finisher last season (20th place), Haglund was the Auggies' top runner last season, setting a career-best 26:00 effort in last season's Central Regional. He also finished 39th in 27:04 at last year's MIAC championships.
