Request for AugCore Stories

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students,

Do you have a great AugCore story to tell??

For Example –

•Do you know a student (or are you a student) who took a class because it met a Liberal Arts Foundation (LAF) requirement, and then decided to major in that discipline?

•Do you know a student who studied abroad (short or long-term) and had a significant /transforming experience?

•What about Engaging Minneapolis, Search for Meaning or Effective Writing, HPE, or Keystone courses? What stories have emerged from these experiences?

•Faculty and Staff, what professional development opportunities has the AugCore presented you? Have you had new conversations or discussions with your departmental colleagues as you develop new courses or course components? Have you met colleagues from other departments through collaborative work related to AugCore - to develop Engaging Minneapolis courses? To discuss Keystones? To assess graduation skills?

Please send me a brief description of your story, anecdote, or experience.

hale@augsburg.edu

Thanks!

Biology Colloquium -- Wednesday, Sept. 17

Kevin Potts, adjunct professor of Biology and Consultant to the South China Tiger Advisory Office (SCTAO) of the Minnesota Zoo will give a talk entitled: "The Apes of the Mountains of the Moon: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation of Chimpanzees in Uganda"

Field primatology, the study of the behavior, ecology, and conservation of wild non-human primates, is historically rooted in several academic disciplines, including anthropology, biology, and psychology. This interdisciplinary foundation resulted in a vast array of field studies of numerous primate taxa, representing a correspondingly wide biogeographic spectrum. In this talk, he will discuss how this proliferation of research led to a growing appreciation of the extent to which behavior and ecology can vary both among and within primate species. He will also introduce some of his own research, which he conduct in Kibale National Park, Uganda, and which centers on identifying the environmental underpinnings of demographic and behavioral variability in chimpanzees. Finally, he will discuss the status of wild chimpanzee populations and the role of researchers in their long-term conservation.

This seminar will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in SCI 123. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Seminary School Fair Registration Deadline Friday

If you are interested in exploring a possible vocation as a pastor, lay ministry professional, religion professor, AIM, or deacon, then you will want to check out the Seminary & Divinity School Fair held on Sept. 25 at Gustavus Adolphus College. Augsburg will be brining a contingent of students to visit with representatives from nearly 20 top-notch schools, participate in break-out sessions that explore the possibilities of a seminary or divinity school education, and talk with current students and recent alumni about their experiences.

We will depart Augsburg at 8 a.m. and return at about 5 p.m. The day begins with chapel at Gustavus, followed by a welcome and introductory comments. A lunch, featuring Augsburg MIS professor and pastor, Lee Clarke will happen mid-day breakout sessions in the afternoon. All day long, representatives from seminaries and divinity schools will be on hand to answer questions about programs and vocational opportunities.

This day is an important way to explore possibilities with people who want to help you find your best fit for a school, a career, and a vocation. Students who are just “checking it out” are encouraged to attend as well.

The registration deadline if FRIDAY. Contact Ross Murray (murray@augsburg.edu) to sign up.

Staff $3.50 Lunch Is Legally $3.75

It seems that Sodexo was charging a staff lunch without filling the legal tax required by Minnesota State and federal tax laws. Because as staff, we are not tax exempt, we have to be charged the proper .0715 on all purchases, causing the $3.50 lunch to become $3.75 with tax. Once again, Augsburg dining would like to apologize for this confusion and would like to thank you for your business. You make us possible.

Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 - Oct. 15

Hispanic Heritage Month
Sept. 15 – Oct. 15

This year marks the 40th anniversary of what began as National Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was expanded in 1988 to encompass the independence days of several Latin American countries, which take place September 15, 16 and 18.

The Hispanic Heritage occasion was originally authorized by Congress in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week, which encompassed September 16 with Mexico’s Independence Day. In 1988 the designation was expanded to a month beginning every September 15, which marks the anniversary of independence of five Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Chile marks the anniversary of its independence on September 18.

This month of remembering is a time for the Hispanic community in the United States to celebrate its history, pride, identity and contributions. Its cultural diversity is reflected in the mix of its roots from individual Latin American countries, including Spain and the Caribbean. The main characteristic of Hispanics/Latinos is the shared native language, Spanish, which is the official language of 21 countries or spoken by over 332 million people in the world, and by more than 35 millions in North America. Although most Hispanics speak Spanish, each subgroup adapts the pronunciation and slang of its homeland according to circumstances. Likewise, they have inherited different religious traditions from foreign countries or from their homelands.

Terminology – What should I say?? Terms like Latino, Hispanic and Chicano are worth remembering. For example: Latino refers to American-traced heritage, such as from Latin America. Hispanic refers to heritage that can be traced back to Spain; according to recent report the majority U.S. residents prefer to be called Hispanic. Chicano refers to residents of the United States who are of Mexican descent, with many also tracing their heritage to Spain, Native American cultures and the Aztec civilization.

Hispanic Heritage Month marks a special opportunity to highlight the rich culture, history and the outstanding achievements of Hispanics in the United States. At Augsburg College student organizations like the Spanish Club, the Allied Latina/os Augsburg Students (ALAS) and the Office of H/L Student Services will announce accordingly performances by local musicians and flamenco dancers as well as speakers to cover politics, business, education or cultural related issues.

For more information write or call Emiliano Chagil at chagil@augsburg.edu or 612-330-1309. -¡Gracias and Viva America!

Recovery Month Tidbits

We are each gifted in a unique and important way. It is our privilege and adventure to discover our own special light. -- Mary Dunbar

All of us are gifted. Every person has a gift that can bring great joy and light to those who encounter it. Our task is to stand in the sun and create a climate that will develop and nurture our gift. Sometimes we are afraid to let ourselves believe we have anything special to offer or contribute to the world. We think of ourselves as plain and untalented, with no gifts or special potential. But if we believe we are limited, we act in a limited way. We take few risks and follow few paths that might develop our special talents and gifts. In recovery we are learning to love ourselves and trust ourselves in a whole new way. Now anything is possible. To fully believe in our talents, we need only step from the darkness into the sun. We will take this first step, trust enough, and start believing that; yes, we do have special gifts.

Today let me be aware of my deep and unfilled desires, dreams, and wishes, which is the first step on the way to accepting our gifts. - Body, Mind, and Spirit by Anonymous

Don't Bring Your Own Cups

Augsburg Dining request that you use the cups that are provided for you. When you bring your own cups that are often larger than the ones that we provide, the cost to fill those up are two to three times as much as the ones provided for you. That begins to add up and eats away at the over all cost to provide Augsburg with great food and service. So please just use the cups that are provided for you. Thank you, Augsburg Dining management.
