Human Resource Department Changes

Over the summer, we have been evaluating the ever changing expectations around the services provided by Human Resources to the college community. The recent staff departures in the department have given us the opportunity to re-evaluate the role HR plays on campus. We have always had a top notch staff of HR professionals to assist with the day to day requirements needed in any organization. Today’s ever changing environment requires that we not only provide the tactical functions present in most HR functions but also the need to develop a strategic focus to help the college compete in an ever more competitive environment.

Our review of HR best practices has indicated that national trends in HR are focusing more on strategic elements like organization assessment, talent management and succession planning. To best meet these ever more challenging requirements of HR, we will be modifying how the department provides these services to the college. We will be moving to a generalist model of HR delivery with an Assistant Vice President to lead the department who will report to the Vice President for Finance and Administration. This follows the approach present in most of the other divisions with an assistant vice president present in a strategic function of the division. Much like the successful model used in Information Technology with the LFCs, HR will have generalists that will be assigned and work directly with departments on campus. The goal of the generalists is to become viewed as vital partners to assist departments in achieving their goals.

There will be three generalists assigned principal relationships with each department on campus. Sandra Hokanson will serve as the senior generalist. Sandra has been with the college for slightly more than a year and has proven her ability on many fronts. Her skill set is a perfect match for the demands of working directly with departments to ensure that the staff are best positioned to be successful. Saykham Panemalaythong will also serve as a generalist. Saykham has most recently served as the staffing specialist in Human Resources. Upon filling of the assistant vice president position, we will also begin a search for a third generalist. It should be noted that HR had four full-time positions before this realignment and will continue to have four full-time positions after.

Until the Assistant Vice President for Human Resources position is filled, Sandra and Saykham will continue in their current roles. We will begin a search next week to locate an Assistant Vice President for Human Resources. This position will work on implementing the strategic components of HR into the college. If you have referrals for this position, please forward them to Kevin Myren.

Sad News from CGE Nicaragua

Ron Rivera, the husband of Kathy McBride (co-director of the CGE in Nicaragua), died suddenly on Wednesday in Managua, Nicaragua, from complications of cerebral malaria that he contracted on a recent trip to Nigeria. Ron was the director of Potters for Peace, an international NGO. In 2004 he gave a campus lecture and demonstration on his work developing cottage industries to produce ceramic water filters in impoverished communities. Contributions to the Ron Rivera Memorial Fund may be sent to the Center for Global Education, campus box 307. The Fund will be used to further the work on water filters to which Ron has given so much of his life.

Diversity Strategic Plan Update -- Wednesday, Sept. 10

Augsburg College launched the diversity strategic planning process in February, 2007. Many individuals and departments were involved in the process, including participation in surveys. From the variety of inputs, we're proposing specific areas to focus on for the next year. Campus community members are invited to the presentation and conversation about this on Wednesday, September 10, 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Johnson Conference room, OGC 100.

If you are unable to attend, please note we will have other campus community meetings and will provide updates to the community via our web site.

No Card, No Eat

t is vital for you to bring your card when you come to eat. Whether you are using flex dollars or board, it is for your safety that you use your card. Others around you can hear your number and then use up all of your points. We have requested that all cashiers ask for a card in order to best serve you. So when the cashier asks for your card, remember that it is in your best interest and safety.

Wanted -- Women Who Are Interested in Playing Golf

Have you ever played golf or though about playing golf? The Augsburg Women's Golf Team is looking for women interested in playing on the team (or even joining the team to learn how to play). Golf experience is preferred but not necessary if committed to learning how to play. For those who have played before, you could start competing right away. Or, if you would prefer, you can also just practice with the team to improve your game (in order to eventually compete).

Average scoring averages from last season ranged from 91 to 122. For more information, check out our web site at http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/wgolf/. If you would like to participate or if you would like more information, please contact Coach Patrick at PatrickL@augsburg.edu as soon as possible.

Head coach, Laura Patrick, is an LPGA Teaching Professional who has been nominated for "Midwest Section Teacher of the Year" by the LPGA and "Best teacher in the State of Minnesota" by Golf Digest. She is a teacher and a coach in every aspect of the game and dedicates her career to creating an environment that is comfortable and welcoming to everyone. She also enjoys working with all levels of golfers, including those who have never played before. As Augsburg's Coach, she has helped the scoring averages of her players drop as much as 10 strokes in one season. During her three years as coach, two of her players have earned Most Improved Player of the Year honors from the Minnesota Women's Collegiate Golf Association (2007, 2008).

There is no cost for joining the team. All athletes at Augsburg must have an athletic physical and proof of insurance on file with the trainer prior to starting practice. You must also be a full-time student in order to participate.

Panasonic Stereo For Sale

I have a Panasonic shelf-system stereo (with working speakers) for sale. Not sure how old it is, but don't have room for it in my dorm room. I'd like to get $75 for it, or BO. Current stereos like this one are going for around $130 in the stores brand new, so $75 is a great deal! It's practically new and does NOT come with a box or instructions.

It works great and is in excellent condition. Comes with everything and a remote that needs batteries.

The stereo is a 5 CD changer, with radio and cassette capabilities as well. Gray and blue in color.

Thanks!
