Security Notice: Arrest Made in Science Building

On Monday, June 9, 2008, two college employees reported that a man they did not know had entered a classroom and a private office, claiming he was looking for the Architecture Department. Augsburg Public Safety Officers located the man and found that he was carrying thieves tools. The officers called Minneapolis Police who arrested the man for possession of thieves tools and a possible parole violation.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

- Always lock your room or office whenever you leave.

- Thieves commonly claim to be looking for an employee or department when found wandering in an office. It is NEVER appropriate for someone to be wandering in your private office, regardless of how lost they may be. Please, ALWAYS call DPS when you encounter this situation. If the person is genuinely lost, we will politely escort them to the person or office they are looking for.

- Keep valuables out of view. If possible, secure them in drawer or cabinet. Better yet, leave unnecessary valuables at home.

- Keep your car keys on your person at all times. This is especially important if you have a remote unlocking device for your car!

- Immediately report suspicious persons or activity to the Minneapolis Police or Augsburg DPS. You can reach Augsburg DPS all day, every day at x1717.

If you have questions or concerns regarding crime at Augsburg, please contact John Pack, Director of Public Safety at 612-330-1644 or pack@augsburg.edu.

Winford Named to Preseason All-America Team

Augsburg's Royce Winford named to Consensus Draft Services Division III Preseason All-America first team

MINNEAPOLIS (6/10/08) -- Augsburg College wide receiver Royce Winford (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) has been named to the Division III Preseason All-America first team by Consensus Draft Services, it was announced this week.

Winford is one of three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players to be named to the 54-member first and second teams by Consensus Draft Services, a pro football draft scouting website. St. John's defensive tackle Nick Gunderson was also named to the first team, while Gustavus wide receiver Chad Arlt was named to the second team.

Winford enters his senior campaign after earning multiple honors as one of the top receivers in the MIAC in 2007. He was named to the D3Football.com All-America second team and the D3Football.com All-West Region first team, in addition to being named as a first-team All-MIAC selection.

In 2007, Winford set a single-season school record with 16 receiving touchdowns, while becoming the first Auggie since 1998 to record a 1,000-yard receiving season. He caught 101 passes for 1,403 yards, the second-most receptions and receiving yards in a single season in school history. He had seven 100-yard-plus receiving yardage games in 2007, including three straight games with 200 or more receiving yards midway through the season. In Augsburg's 38-16 victory over Carleton on Oct. 20, Winford set a team and MIAC single-game record with 20 receptions, a total that was tops among all NCAA football players, regardless of division, during the 2007 campaign.

His 10.1 receptions per-game finished second-best among all NCAA Division III receivers, and his 140.3 receiving yards per-game and 1,403 receiving yards were third-best among all Division III receivers and were tops among all MIAC receivers in overall play. In league games-only, his 89 receptions (11.1 per-game) and 1,189 yards (148.6 per-game) were both tops among all MIAC receivers.

Among all college football receivers (all NCAA divisions and NAIA) in 2007, Winford's 10.1 receptions per game ranked seventh-highest nationally, while his 140.3 receiving yards per-game were fifth-highest nationally and his 1,403 receiving yards were eighth-highest nationally.

In 28 career games, Winford has 154 catches (fourth-most in school history) for 2,143 yards (fourth-most in school history) and 24 receiving touchdowns (third-most in school history).

Under Haege, in his third year as Augsburg's head coach, the Auggie football team finished 5-5 overall, 3-5 in MIAC play in 2007, marking the first time Augsburg had reached the .500 mark since 2003 (5-5 overall, 4-4 MIAC). With its five victories, Augsburg also eclipsed its number of wins from the previous three seasons combined (4-26).

Longtime Assistant Coach Darrell Wiese to Retire

Longtime Augsburg assistant coach Darrell Wiese to retire
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/060208wiese.html

MINNEAPOLIS (6/2/08) -- Longtime Augsburg College assistant coach Darrell Wiese (Augsburg '59) is retiring, baseball head coach Keith Bateman has announced. Wiese, who spent the past 13 seasons as a baseball assistant coach, announced his retirement at the baseball team's postseason banquet recently.

Wiese has spent nearly his entire life as an important fixture in Augsburg athletics. He attended Augsburg from 1956-59 and was a member of the 1959 Augsburg baseball team that tied St. Thomas and St. Mary's for the MIAC baseball title. He also served the college as an assistant athletic recruiter and was a football assistant coach for more than a decade, and was a volunteer assistant in Augsburg's athletic programs for many years.

A Northfield, Minn., resident, Wiese was known for his recruiting prowess, scouring the small towns of southern Minnesota for talent for the Augsburg baseball and football programs. He personally recruited many of the top athletes to ever wear an Augsburg uniform in both sports.

In 2004, Bateman recognized Wiese's lifelong contribution to Augsburg athletics by naming a baseball team trophy in Wiese's honor -- the Darrell Wiese Most Respected Player Award.

"Darrell has truly been the backbone of this program for the past 12-plus years," Bateman said about Wiese's retirement announcement. "His love for Augsburg College and the baseball program has brought many kids to this campus. Through his dedication and hard work, those kids have left here as men. Darrell is a great representative for this institution and this baseball program. I cannot tell you how much I will miss him.

"Darrell has done more for this baseball program and institution than any one will ever know," Bateman added. "His passion and dedication to Augsburg College is second to none. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to have been around this great man for the past five years. The game will feel a little different without him around. My first year here at Augsburg, Darrell had recruited 32 of the 34 guys on the team. If it were not for him holding things together behind the scenes, the program would not have made the (MIAC) playoffs in 2005."
