I&CD Summer Stipends

Instructional and Course Design Summer Stipends
Call for Proposals - Summer 2008

The Instructional and Course Design initiative in the Center for Teaching and Learning invites proposals for design-based course creation or revision projects to be undertaken during Summer 2008 and completed by the end of Fall term 2008. Proposals are due March 8 and funding decisions will be made before mid-term break. Faculty who are creating new learning experiences or revising existing ones are encouraged to submit.

Program Description

Funding levels are intended to provide a realistic alternative to teaching summer courses in order to re-direct faculty effort to design questions and have a direct impact on the effectiveness of mainline academic year courses. The program supports both design- based critique and revision of existing courses and design-based creation of new courses. The stipend amount is $4,000.

Submission, Selection Process, and Selection Criteria

You are encouraged to attend one of the four Design Proposal Guidance sessions offered on Mach 4 and 5 in Lindell 202, as well as the Panel Discussion featuring some of 2007-08’s Design Project Leaders on March 7.
Proposals should be submitted directly to the Asst. Director for IC&D as Microsoft WORD files attached to an e-mail "cover letter" message. The e-mail address is: anderstu@augsburg.edu

Proposals are due by March 8, 2008 and should follow the requested format to facilitate evaluation and turnaround. They will be evaluated by the IC&D committee composed of the Asst. Director of CTL for IC&D, a member of the IT staff, a member of the library staff, and a representative from CFD. Decisions will be made before Spring Break.

Projects are selected on the basis of the overall impact of the proposed student learning improvements, including the need for the project, the significance of the proposed improvements.

Project Execution and Compensation

Kickoff meeting. Awardees will meet with the Asst. Director for IC&D and each other during April before commencing work on the project as well as while the work is progressing over the summer. The purpose of the initial meetings is to clarify the expectations of the design process (working from learning objectives to evidence to assessments to choice of instruction) as it relates to each particular project, set timetables for subsequent gatherings and communication during the project, and identify fruitful connections to design and resource expertise within the library, IT, or other areas.

Communication during the project. During the project work period, the awardee will maintain communication with the Asst. Director and others as agreed upon in the initial meeting to report progress and acquire assistance with the design effort.

Final Report

After the project is completed, the awardee will prepare and submit a written report that summarizes the results the work, focusing principally on extent to which the learning objectives that drove the design process were achieved as well as the effectiveness of the IC&D process in achieving these results. In addition, the report should include a portfolio of all materials whose modification (before and after versions) or creation resulted from the project. Finally, participants are expected to serve as panelists in a public discussion for the benefit of others interested in design projects.

Stipend Disbursement. Release of stipend funds will occur in two parts: half to be released after successful initial meetings and the remaining half released after the final report is received.

General Announcements

Bike Trip Sponsorship, Bikes at the Library

Over the last month, a group of 14 students have been diligently planning for a alternative spring break bicycle trip from New Orleans to Biloxi, Mississippi, 100 miles away. The trip is based on social and environmental justice: riding the Greyhound to reduce fuel consumption, biking as our mode of movement once we're there, and serving alongside social and environmental groups along our journey. You'll hear and see more about the trip when we return, and hopefully from as many people as possible.

To make it possible for all the students to afford to go, we're accepting donations to offer small scholarships to students needing it. Any amount would help. If you are interested in supporting the students in this way, please let me know. noy@augsburg.edu

Speaking of bikes, student Leann Vice-Reshel has been working on a program for the library to check out bicycles for free. She is currently collecting bicycles, so if you have a dusty one in your garage that you could contribute, please e-mail her at viceresh@augsburg.edu

Thank you for all your support

Winter Soldier -- Iraq Veterans Against the War

To support soldiers against the war:

Iraq Veterans: It’s our turn to tell our stories
Iraq Veterans Against the War to convene "Winter Soldier" as occupation enters 6th year

Washington, D.C. – Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) is preparing to launch an event that will give veterans and service members a chance to speak out about the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan will feature testimony that will expose the human consequences of failed policy. From March 13-16 at the National Labor College just outside of Washington, D.C., veterans from across the country will be standing up to share their experiences. Their stories will show that wrongdoings in Iraq and Afghanistan are not isolated incidents perpetrated by “bad apples.” “We’ve heard from the politicians, we’ve heard from the generals, we’ve heard from the media – now it’s our turn,” said Kelly Dougherty, executive director of IVAW and a former sergeant in the Colorado Army National Guard, who served in Iraq as a military police officer. “It’s not going to be easy to hear what we have to say. It’s not going to be easy for us to tell it. But we believe that the only way this war is going to end is if the American people truly understand what we have done in their name.” The event has been named Winter Soldier to honor a similar gathering 30 years ago of veterans of the Vietnam War. Winter soldiers, according to founding father Thomas Paine, are the people who stand up for the soul of their country, even in its darkest hours.

Hundreds of veterans are planning to travel to Washington for the event, which will feature live testimony – along with supporting video and photographic documentation – as well as panel discussions that will focus on the human impact of the war as well as the continuing break down of the military. For those who won’t be able to travel to Washington, live video and audio feeds of the entire Winter Soldier weekend will be available – groups across the country are already planning to gather and watch the event. Iraq Veterans Against the War was founded in 2004 to give those who have served in the military since September 11, 2001 a way to come together and speak out against an unjust, illegal and unwinnable war. Today, IVAW has over 700 members in 49 states, Washington, D.C. and Canada and on military bases overseas.

Alum Mastro Finalist for U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame

Augsburg alum Dr. James Mastro '73 a finalist for induction into U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/022908mastro.html

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (2/29/08) -- Augsburg College alumnus Dr. James Mastro '73, a pioneer in athletics for the blind, is one of five Paralympic athlete finalists nominated for induction into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame, it was announced this week.

The award is the latest for Mastro, a former Augsburg wrestler and four-sport competitor in seven Paralympics (Olympic competition for disabled athletes). In May, Mastro will receive the Medal of Courage award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in ceremonies in Stillwater, Okla.

Members of the public can help to determine the 2008 class of inductees by voting on the USOC's Hall of Fame website. Voting ends on March 28, and the 2008 class of inductees will be announced the week of April 14. Six individual Olympians, one Olympic team and one Paralympian, along with a coach, veteran and special contributor, will be honored during the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Presented by Allstate, on June 19 in Chicago, Ill. The finalists in the various categories were selected by a nominating committee consisting of athletes, members of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, historians and USOC representatives.

Mastro, who has been totally blind since age 18, was a member of the Augsburg wrestling team from 1968-73, earning All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors twice and winning the conference title at 177 pounds as a senior in 1973. Despite his visual impairment, he shined as an amateur wrestler. He competed as a member of the U.S. team at the World University Games in 1973, while earning bronze medals at international competitions three times. In 1976, he became the first blind athlete to be a member of an Olympic team, when he was an alternate on the U.S. Greco-Roman wrestling team at the Montreal Olympics.

Mastro competed in seven Paralympics, becoming the first Paralympic athlete ever to medal in four different sports. He earned 10 medals (five gold, three silver, two bronze) while competing in wrestling, judo, track and field and goalball (an on-court team sport designed for blind athletes). He has also earned 17 international medals in other competitions, including the gold medal at the 1995 World Judo Championships for the Blind. In 1996, he was named as the flag-bearer for the United States team at the Paralympics opening ceremonies in Atlanta, Ga. In 1995, Mastro was named Blind Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Olympic Committee, and he was inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. He is also a past president of the National Beep Baseball Association and served on the board of directors of the United States Association of Blind Athletes.

A professor of professional education and physical education at Bemidji State University, Mastro has also been a pioneer in education. He was the first student with a visual impairment to earn a Ph.D. in physical education in the United States, when he earned his doctorate, with an emphasis in adapted and developmental physical education, from Texas Woman's University. He taught at the University of Minnesota before moving to Bemidji State. He has authored or co-authored 47 published articles and performed 26 national and international presentations on adapted and developmental physical education for state and national organizations, as well as athletes with disabilities.
