Last Design Proposal Guidance Session

The Instructional and Course Design initiative in the Center for Teaching and Learning offers its last Design Proposal Guidance Sessions to help you prepare your I&CD summer proposal (held in Lindell 202):

ACTC Women's Studies Conference this Friday

Friday, March 7, is the second annual ACTC Women’s Studies Student Conference. Exploring issues such as the real messages in Disney movies, the application of transgender theory to Cymbeline, sexual assault education and policy at Augsburg, African American feminist philosophy, and much more, students will share their research and activism around gender and sexuality.

This free conference runs from 3:30 - 8 p.m., and it is not necessary to register in advance:

Scholastic Connections Applications Available

Applications are now being accepted for Scholastic Connections for 2008-09.

SC is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color (American Indian, Hispanic/Latino, Pan-Afrikan, Pan Asian) at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate receive a $5,000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color who serves as mentor to the student.

Five "new" students will be selected for the program for 2008-09.

Eligibility Criteria:
Returning Augsburg student or advanced-standing transfer student
Demonstrated involvement in community activities (on or off campus)
Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
GPA of 2.5 of higher
Completed financial aid file by April 15, 2008.

Application deadline: April 15, 2008

Join us as we watch the documentary "Do I Look Fat?" and discuss body image in the gay men's community.

This discussion series takes place on the first Tuesday of each month; same time, same place.

Creation: The Common Story Continues TODAY

Today, we continue Augsburg College’s Inter-Religious Dialog. This morning, we will hear from Rabbi Lynn Liberman, Director of Congregational Learning at Beth Jacob Congregation. This afternoon, Hatem al-Haj, MD will speak to us about the Muslim view of creation. A closing panel will bring all three guests together for further conversation.

Augsburg's Day of Silence

Every year QSU invites the Augsburg Community to participate in the National Day of Silence, a movement practiced throughout middle schools, high schools, and colleges in America. The purpose of the Day of Silence is to bring attention to the silence and prejudices the LGBTQIA community face daily.

Because the National Day of Silence falls on the last day of school this year, Augsburg is hosting their own Day of Silence on March 6. If you are interested in participating, stop by the QSU table this week to sign up. Or you can e-mail us at qsu@augsburg.edu.

Prayer Stations

Tomorrow night, as a part of Lent, Campus Ministry is offering prayer stations. Before and after communion, beginning at 7 p.m., there will be prayer stations located in and around the chapel. The Augsburg Native American Film Series 2007-8 and the ACTC Women's Studies Program Proudly presents:

This documentary chronicles her career as she rises to prominence in the 1960s Greenwich Village folk music scene and blazes a groundbreaking path as an Aboriginal activist, digital artist and popular songwriter.

Volunteers are needed for the Nobel Peace Prize Festival on March 6 from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Hours are flexible and can possibly be used to meet a service learning component for your class. The Nobel Peace Prize Festival is an event where students from around the metro area honor a Nobel Laureate and your help would be greatly appreciated.

Student Speaker Nominations for May Commencement

Faculty,

Planning for the first Commencement ceremony of this year, to be held on Saturday, May 3, is well underway across campus. An important part of this planning is the selection of a student representative to speak at this ceremony.

Each year, a senior undergraduate student is selected from faculty nominations and invited to deliver a 4-minute speech at the May Commencement. Many of you have advisees and/or students in your classes who will graduate this year, and who have made significant achievements in their academic careers at Augsburg. The theme of this year’s commencement, “Global Learning,” provides an opportunity to reflect on the collective experience of an Augsburg education and experience within the context of our changing world. I encourage you to submit the names of those students whom you feel can reflect on the significance of an Augsburg education within this context.

Nominations for Linda Schrempp Alberg Award

The Linda Shrempp Alberg Award was established to recognize Linda's outstanding commitment and exemplary leadership to student affairs and to Augsburg. Linda served as the Director of Residence Life and Associate Dean of Student Affairs and served Augsburg for 19 years. She died in 1996 at the age of 44.

The Leadership Award is given annually to an Augsburg undergraduate student who reflects the qualities of leadership and commitment to enhancing college life. The amount of the award is approximately $500.

Nominations are accepted from the campus community. Self-nominations are also encouraged.

The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 14. The nomination form can be found at http://web.augsburg.edu/~garvey/Albergawardform.doc

The award recipient will be announced at the Annual Student Leadership Recognition event, Sunday, April 13.

Women's History Month Honorary Dinner

In celebration of Women's History Month, LINK and the Student Feminist Collective invite you to join us for a chance to honor a select group of women from the community who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others. Dinner is free and will be enjoyed with local musician Chastity Brown sharing her gift of music. You will then get a chance to meet and listen to these wonderful women share a bit of their story and their lives.

Day Spring Elections and Wind/Energy Referendum

Greetings Day Students,

Spring elections for Day student government are Sunday, March 9 through Wednesday, March 12.

A petition was submitted to Day Student Government to place on the Spring Elections ballot a referendum for wind energy. Day Senate voted to approve the referendum. Day Senate asks the Day students to vote on the referendum that reads:

“The Day Student Body imposes a non-refundable permanent fee of $14.75 per semester to purchase wind energy.”

If the referendum passes, the fee will appear on your tuition as a separate fee, similar to the newspaper readership fee. If the referendum does not pass, no fee will be assessed.

Elect your representatives for the 2008-2009 academic year and vote on the Wind Energy Referendum by clicking the elections icon on Inside Augsburg.

The Brian Coyle Foodshelf: Multiply in March

This March, as part of the Minnesota Foodshare program through the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches, the Brian Coyle Center is holding a massive donation drive for its foodshelf. The more food and dollars they can recruit, the more support they will receive from Foodshare's incentive food fund.

As one of our core commitments to the neighborhood, the Augsburg Community has always been incredibly generous and this year we hope to generate a lot of support.

As always, the Coyle Center is looking for the following staples:

Pasta, rice, flour, and sugar (in 1 lb. bags)
vegetable oil
Canned tomato products (no meat)
Canned tuna

There will be bins near the stairs in the Christensen Center. Please consider making a cash donation as well, as the Coyle Center can then have the flexibility to purchase what our neighbors most need. Contact Tim Dougherty in CSWL for more information (x1208, doughert@augsburg.edu).

Dharma Teacher at MCTC on Wednesday

The Diamond Way Buddhist Center of Minneapolis will be hosting traveling dharma teacher Mike Freeland for a talk entitled "Buddhism in a Modern World" on the Campus of the Minneapolis Community and Technical College. The program will take place on Wednesday, March 5 at 8 p.m. in room 3360 of Kopp Hall.

There is a Suggested donation of $10, or $7 with student ID.

Minneapolis Community and Technical College is located at 1501 Hennepin Ave S. in downtown Minneapolis. Parking is available in the College parking ramp located on Hennepin Avenue across from the campus. Newcomers are always welcome.

Need Some Stress Relief?

If you need a little stress relief and also want to get in some exercise, there are two FREE opportunities to do so today. Yoga will be offered from noon - 1 p.m. in the Marshall Room today (and Thursday). You should wear comfortable clothes and bring a mat if you want to do so.

Tonight from 5 - 6 p.m., tai chi instruction will be held in the Century Room (lower level of Christensen Center). Tai chi is known both as a martial art and a form of exercise. Please feel free to come each week as you are able to do so and of course friends are always welcome.

Free Ice Skating for All Augsburg Students, March 7

Free skate rental, admission, and light-rail tokens for first 50 students!!!

Students can go separately to the Depot if they want on FRIDAY, MARCH 7 from 4:30-11 p.m. Otherwise, Community Advisors will be leaving every half-hour from the U/M lobby starting at 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Skate time is 4:30 -11 p.m. You can stay as long as you like until the rink is closed.

Only Augsburg students with their IDs will get the free rentals and admissions.

Non-Augsburg students will have to pay $12 at The Depot.

Nobel Peace Prize Festival on Thursday

Young People Celebrating the Nobel Peace Prize

The annual Nobel Peace Prize Festival is taking place this Thursday, March 6 in Si Melby. The Festival opens to the public at 11 a.m., with the opening stage program beginning at 11:15 a.m. Come see students from around the metro area celebrate Dr. Yunus and other Nobel Laureates through musical performances and displays.

Christensen Center Task Force report

The Christensen Center Task Force continue its work on renovating Christensen Center to better meet the needs of the campus community for a student center.

The former bookstore space is slowly being converted to lounge space with pool tables and a ping pong table. Furniture will arrive the week of March 17-20, and we'll have two TVs in the space as well. Eventually, we'll be able to provide games via an Xbox or Playstation.

Watch for news of our grand opening March 24-29.

The Task Force is looking at two options for the coming year.
1.Converting the Marshall room to the 24-hour computer lab
2.Seeing what changes/progress we can make in the food areas, along with the Food Committee and the RFP Work Group.

English Majors Present

On Friday, 29 February, at the annual ACTC English Majors' Conference, hosted by Hamline University, Augsburg English majors Kari Aanestad, Emily Hanson, Suzanne Stenson-O'Brien, Sean Stanhill, and Niki Vaith presented their scholarly and creative work. The overarching theme of the conference was "Literature and Everyday Life: Texts and Contexts" and involved 5 sessions: Stenson-O'Brien spoke about "The Nine Worthies: Origin and Meaning" at the session on British Literature; Aanestad presented her work on "Ragnvald Aanestad and the Lutheran Sermon" at the American Literature session; Vaith presented "Yin and Yang in Snow Flower and the Secret Fan: The Birth of a New Generation of Feminism" at the session on Multicultural/World Literature; Stanhill discussed "Reading Cymbeline through Modern Transgender Theory" at the session on Media/Theory; and Hanson read her two Engman Award-winning poems "Prague House of Photography" and "August 1965," as well as "Girl," at the final literary reading. The English Department is proud of the accomplishments of these fine students.
