Struggling With Eating and Body Image?

From the National Eating Disorders Association:

•Do you spend time wishing parts of your body looked different?
•Do you skip meals?
•Do you count the calories or fat grams in everything you eat?
•Do you exercise so much that you are fatigued or have frequent injuries?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, keep reading….

Living in our culture, it’s not surprising if you feel you have to look a certain way to be happy or even healthy. You may think that dieting is a normal or even necessary part of life. However, constant concern about body weight and shape, fat grams and calories can start a vicious cycle of body dissatisfaction and obsession. The things you’re doing to be thin can quickly spin out of control and become a serious, life-threatening eating disorder.

Just because you weigh yourself, skip meals, count calories, or over-exercise doesn’t necessarily mean that you have an eating disorder. But you may be dealing with what’s called “disordered eating.”

For more information, check out the website, www.NationalEatingDisorders.org. Or, see the Counseling & Health Promotion webpage on Eating Concerns at www.augsburg.edu/cchp/eatingconcerns.html.

Freedom Friday

The Center for Counseling & Health Promotion invites you to take a break from your diet (if you are on one) and eat something you don't usually let yourself enjoy. Stop by the "Freedom Friday" table tomorrow in Christensen Center from 11:30 - 1:00 p.m. and get some delicious dark chocolate, sign the "Body Peace Treaty" from Seventeen Magazine and learn about "Why Diets Don't Work."

Here are a few of the messages from the Body Peace Treaty:

I vow to:
*Never blame my body for the bad day I am having.
*Stop joining in when my friends compare and trash their own bodies.
*Notice all the amazing things by body is doing for me every moment I walk, talk, think, breathe...
*Quiet that little negative voice in my head when it starts to say mean things about my body that I'd never tolerate anyone else saying about my me.
*Respect my body by feeding it well, working up a sweat when it needs it, and knowing when to give it a break.

Visit www.augsburg.edu/cchp/eatingconcerns.html for great web sites on body image and eating concerns. Or go to the national eating disorders week web site at www.nationaleatingdisorders.org.

If you would like to make an appointment with one of the CCHP counselors, please call 612-330-1707 to set up an appointment.

Green Thumbs up

This spring, Augsburg College is starting a community garden in partnership with some gardeners and other organizations in the neighborhood. We hope this garden will become an educational tool for both the Augsburg and neighborhood community, provide fresh food for gardeners and the Campus Kitchen alike, and become an inviting gathering space at the western edge of our campus.

There is still space available if you'd like to garden, and we're always looking for folks with expertise to share! Come help us grow something everyone can be proud of!

Please contact Tim Dougherty for details, x1208.

She was also named an American Women's College Hockey Association Division III National Scholar-Athlete honoree the past two seasons.

Magnuson, a forward, earned All-MIAC first-team honors for the third straight year, joining St. Thomas' Jackie Carroll and Bethel's Beth Spurrier as the only conference juniors to earn All-MIAC first-team honors each of their first three seasons. Also a two-year starting second baseman for the Augsburg softball team, Magnuson has earned All-MIAC first-team honors in that sport each of her first two seasons.

Magnuson finished the season with the team's lead in goals (12), assists (11) and points (23). She ranked seventh among MIAC players in overall points, sixth in goals and 15th in assists. In MIAC games-only statistics, Magnuson was tied for sixth in total points (20), sixth in goals (10) and eighth in assists (10). She had a goal or assist in 15 of Augsburg's 23 games this season.

In 73 career games over three years, Magnuson now has 56 goals and 24 assists for 80 points, standing second in school history in goals and fourth in total points. Lauren Chezick (2001-05) holds the school’s overall scoring record with 137 points (55 goals, 82 assists), while Angie Rieger (1997-2001) holds the school’s goal-scoring record with 68.

Menth, a goalie, earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors for the second straight year. Playing in all but 20 minutes of Augsburg's season in goal, Menth collected 817 saves for a .912 save percentage, with a 3.44 goals-against-average. Her save percentage ranked seventh among MIAC goalies, while her 817 saves were second-most among conference goalies.
