Attend Open Session -- Signature Academic Building

Many thanks to everyone who attended last Friday's Brown Bag lunch that featured a discussion about the signature academic building. Architects from Holabird & Root and the Project Management Team appreciated your feedback on the building project. Barbara Farley will gather additional feedback during a coffee break scheduled on Feb. 27th from 2 - 3 p.m. in the Marshall Room. We need your best ideas to make this a great building in the heart of campus.

Faculty Scholarship Forum
Thursday, February 28

Staff and faculty are invited to attend the Faculty Scholarship Forum, 4 - 5:30 p.m., in the Johnson Seminar Room, OGC. As a community of scholars, this is a key opportunity to learn about the work of a diverse faculty involved in sabbatical and summer research, travel, conference presentations and publishing.

The Instructional and Course Design initiative in the Center for Teaching and Learning offers four Design Proposal Guidance Sessions to help you prepare your I&CD summer proposal, all held in Lindell 202:

Friday Seminar, Feb. 29

"Images and Experiences of God's Presence Among ELCA Youth"

In what type of God do youth believe? How do they experience this God's presence and activity in their lives? Jeremy Myers (Assistant Professor of Religion - Youth and Family Ministry) has recently finished quantitative and qualitative research into the ways in which youth in the ELCA image and experience God. This research, and its implications for the church, will be discussed at the upcoming Friday Seminar.

Refreshments are served at 3:30 p.m. in Lindell 301. The presentation begins at 4 p.m.

“Multiculturalism and the Right to Offend: Ayan Hirsi Ali’s Infidel” facilitated by Jacqui deVries and Jim Trelstad-Porter. There are 20 spaces reserved for faculty and staff. Costs are paid by the Center for Teaching and Learning. The book “Infidel” by Ayann Hirsi Ali is available in the CTL office, link level of the library. Mileage Reimbursement/Rochester Flat Rate Change

Effective immediately, Augsburg College will be changing the mileage rate reimbursement from $0.40 per mile to $0.505 per mile. The flat rate when traveling to Rochester will be $82.00. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact Amy Daugherty at X1031 or daughera@augsburg.edu.

Eating Disorders Awareness Week -- Mindful Eating

In honor of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, here are a couple of thoughts from author Susan Albers on Eating Mindfully:

Thinking Mindfully: Observe how critical thoughts like “I don’t want to gain the Freshman Fifteen,” or “I’m so stupid, how could I do that!” can creep into your consciousness. Just because you think these thoughts doesn’t mean you have to act on them or let them sway your emotions. Negative thoughts can trigger overeating or stop you from adequately feeding your hunger. Remember: A thought is just a thought, not a fact.

Mindful Speech: Chit chatting about dieting and fat is so commonplace that we often aren’t truly aware of the impact it might have on our self-esteem. When you are with friends and family, be mindful of your gut reaction to “fat talk” (e.g. “I’m so fat!” or the “I’m so fat; No you’re not” debate). Keep in mind how the words might affect someone struggling with food issues.

St. David's Day Celebration with Gymanfa Ganu

Monday in Chapel...Celebration of St David's Day, Patron Saint of Wales, with a Welsh Hymn Sing, Gymanfa Ganu.

The Welsh are a nation of singers, and whenever gathered together, they perform in harmony, rarely unison. Singing is part of the culture. Welsh emigrants brought their vocal traditions with them, and the Gymanfa Ganu, translated as "gathering for song" is a regular event in any community with a significant Welsh population.

The hymns are not simply sung through at a Gymanfa. The director may pick and choose among the verses; may designate them for men's or women's voices; may repeat verses because they weren't sung enthusiastically enough the first time or because he/she likes them and feels like it. Gymanfa challenges the congregation and it eliminates the boredom of singing all melody, all the time.

You are invited to come and sing or listen as Mary Morris Mergenthal, a leader in the Minnesota Welsh Community, leads us in Gymanfa Ganu!

Interested in Playing Intramural Co-Ed Volleyball?

Intramurals is now taking rosters for the first 16 teams to get signed-up. Those first 16 rosters will actually be broken down into two different divisions this time around: Division I (Teams can have up to two Auggie Volleyball players, or just think you can play at this level; or Division II: (Teams cannot have any Auggie Volleyball players, more emphasis on just having fun).

Sign-Up Deadline: March 12, 2008
League Starts: March 25, 2008

A-Club Seeking A-Club President Nominations

The Augsburg A-Club is seeking nominations for a new A-Club President!
The A-Club is a service organization of former and current Augsburg College athletes and friends of the college committed to providing student athletes with the opportunity to have a quality athletic experience, by supporting Auggie athletic teams, the athletic department, and the mission of the college.

President Job Description:
-Must be an Augsburg Alumnus
-Represents the A-Club as the official spokesperson
-Presides over A-Club Executive Committee meetings (About 6 meetings held per year)
-Approves the agenda for each meeting
-Approves all A-Club correspondence with members and potential members
-Should be at all club functions or appoint an officer to attend (Functions include: annual golf tournament, Annual Hall of Fame banquet, and occasionally others)
-Works with the Membership Chair to increase membership participation and dues
-Works to recruit new Executive Committee board members
-Works with the A-Club Coordinator to write an annual report detailing the club’s activities, meetings, events, and future plans. To be submitted to Executive Committee, Athletic Department and Alumni Relations by July 1 of each year.
