Winter Retreat

Life of the Mind Retreat
March 7, 2008
Oak Ridge Conference Center, Chaska

“Creating Dialogue on Tough Issues: Religion, Politics and Violence” facilitated by Jacqui deVries and Jim Trelstad-Porter. There are 20 spaces reserved for faculty and staff. Costs are paid by the Center for Teaching and Learning. The book “Infidel” by Ayann Hirsi Ali will be available for reading by each participant prior to the retreat. You may register by calling x1229 or send an e-mail to martin. Books for retreat participants are available in the CTL office in the link level of the library. Specific retreat information will follow in early February.

Biology Candidate Seminars

The Biology Department is hosting faculty candidates this week.

On Wednesday, Feb. 6, Dr. Jennifer Bankers-Fulbright will give a talk entitled "Search and Destroy: How Your Immune System Finds and Kills Microbes (a.k.a., the study of immunophysiomicrobiology!)." This seminar will be held in SCI 123.

On Friday, Feb. 8, Dr. Lakshmi Nagarajan will present "Designing effective DNA vaccines using molecularly engineered biomaterials for targeted delivery of DNA." This seminar will be held in SCI 123.

All seminars will be held from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. Refreshments will be provided

ACTC Women's Studies Conference

Are you doing work in Women’s Studies? Are you involved in feminist/womanist activism? We're looking for student posters and presentations on research, activism, or creative works. Spring Workshop Series: Living Leadership

The Center for Leadership Studies (CLS) invites you to its spring series entitled “Living Leadership.” The ideas of Robert Greenleaf, who created the concept of servant leadership, continue to inspire and challenge us. The series will begin with a discussion of the nature of servant leadership and how it can be applied in our lives. The second workshop will explore a concept that is vital to servant leadership: the important role that self-reflection plays in informing and strengthening our leadership activities.

In part because of its poetic and metaphoric quality, servant leadership has been subject to a broad range of interpretation. Greenleaf, aware of the elusive quality of his servant-leader model, offered his readers helpful guidelines in determining true servant leadership. He wrote that the best test for servant leadership lies in asking and re-asking fundamental questions: “Do those being served grow as persons?” “What is the effect on the least privileged in society?” Yet another of his questions highlights the importance of intention: “What are you trying to do? — one of the easiest to ask and most difficult to answer of questions.”

Join us as we explore these and other aspects of the profoundly moving ideas behind servant leadership.

Bring your curiosity, humor, imagination, and a pencil. Come prepared to think, feel, write and/or draw your way into an understanding of what you know, or don’t know, about yourself as a leader. This evening is a time to explore the rich and fertile inner territory of leadership.

Focus the Nation Local Food Resources

According to the non-profit group Sustainable Table, the typical carrot travels 1,838 miles before it ends up in your kitchen. That’s a lot of food miles, and a tremendous amount of wasted fossil fuels and packaging.

To remedy that, one can eat seasonal, eat local, and eat lower on the food chain.

Here at Augsburg, we're trying to make that as easy as possible. If you are interested in a community garden space, or in purchasing produce directly from a local farmer throughout the growing season, please contact Tim Dougherty (doughert@augsburg.edu) or Brian Noy (noy@augsburg.edu).

BioMedical Science Panels on Feb. 19

In conjunction with the MN Private College Job/Internship Fair, there will be Biomedical Science Panels -- sponsored by Aerotek Scientific -- on
Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Each panel will be comprised of 5-8 scientists from local biomedical/medical device, pharmaceutical science, or biotech organizations. Panelists will present information on their organization, what they do, their career path, and the like to students interested in the industry.

Organizations represented at previous job fair panels include: 3M, Aerotek Scientific, Beckman Coulter, Boston Scientific, Ecolab, General Mills, Guidant, Medtox, and Medtronic

Panels at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

World Visions Staff Book Group -- Book Change

Greg Mortenson, author of the New York Times bestseller "Three Cups of Tea," is scheduled to be a presenter at this year's Peace Prize Forum. He has established schools in the most remote poverty stricken parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and is the founder of nonprofit Central Asia Institute and Pennies For Peace.

Given this wonderful opportunity to hear him speak at the Peace Prize Forum, we have decided to change our winter book selection to his book, "Three Cups of Tea."

Forum in Law

Come to this free event focused on all things law. From noon - 2 p.m., you can browse tables staffed by representatives of law schools and organizations that hire law-related positions. This is a great way to explore law schools or careers related to law. In addition to schools, participants include paralegal organizations, corrections, and law enforcement organizations. You can also gather information about law school tests, test prep centers, pre-law advising at the U of M, and the U of M Pre-Law Student Society.

From 2 - 4:30 p.m., various event participants will give short presentations about their organization or school. See the presentation schedule at the event and sign up for any that might interest you.

Reminder: Namibia Info Sessions Thursday, Feb. 7

Cheryl Leuning will hold two information sessions on Thursday, Feb. 7, for the Nursing Department trips to the Republic of Namibia scheduled for April 10 - 25 or July 9 - 24. You do not need to be a Nursing major to participate in the July course, as it is offered as a Women Studies course (WST 362).

The first info session on Thursday, Feb. 7, will be held at noon and will meet in Lindell 1 on the Minneapolis campus and will teleconference to Rochester at Bethel Lutheran (room TBD). The second session that same day will be held at 6 p.m. and will also meet in Minneapolis in Lindell 1 and will teleconference to Bethel Lutheran in Rochester (room TBD).

Cheryl Leuning will have a brief presentation at each session and will be available for questions and answers. You only need to attend one session, and handouts will be available.

Washington Center Project Application Due Monday

Does your vocational calling include a career in politics, journalism, or public policy? Or do you just find the political process and elections fascinating? Either way, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you!

Because of Augsburg’s commitment to experiential education/internships in government and public policy arenas, the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars unanimously selected Augsburg as its partner for the Republican National Convention Seminar. The two-week seminar will begin one week prior to the Convention which will be held Sept. 1 - 4 at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul. Augsburg will host 250 students from across the country who will interact with local and national politicians, journalists and others during the convention. Spaces have been reserved for twenty Augsburg students (at a reduced rate)! To learn more about this exciting program visit the Washington Center's web site at www.twc.edu

In addition to the Washington Center Seminar, Augsburg students can earn academic credit by enrolling in one of the following opportunities during the fall term (this is NOT required to participate in the Seminar):
• POL 326 (Political Parties and Behavior)
• Independent Study (299 or 499) with Augsburg faculty interested in working with students on a project linked to the Convention or the 2008 Presidential Election
• Internship (199 or 399) with Augsburg faculty interested in working with students on a project linked to the Convention or the 2008 Presidential Election

Washington Center Seminar dates: Sunday, Aug. 24 – Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 (Republican National Convention: Sept.1–4).

Eligibility: Open to ALL Augsburg students(including those who plan to graduate in May) with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.

To apply: The application is available in the Dean's Office (1st floor Memorial Hall). DO NOT apply at the Washington Center web site. DEADLINE: Monday, Feb. 11 by 5 p.m. Submit applications to the Dean's Office.

Students accepted to the program will be required to participate in a resume writing workshop conducted by the Center for Service Work and Learning. This workshop will assist students in completing a resume that must be sent to the Washington Center by March 1 (time and location: TBA).

Program cost: $500 for Augsburg students

Housing: On-campus housing is available for students who will be living on the Minneapolis campus during the fall semester. Also, students may live off campus or stay at the Washington Center's hotel (Holiday Inn Metrodome) if there is space available. More information about the availability and cost of hotel accommodations will be sent to applicants.

Vagina Monologues on Campus

Vagina Monologues, a play depicting women and their lives, will be held on campus Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 7:30pm in Sateren. Tickets are available at the door. The prices are as follows: Augsburg students $12, Non-Augsburg students $15, $5 if you volunteer at the show. Yoga and Tai Chi TODAY

Need a little stress relief? Need some low impact work outs? Yoga and tai chi may be able to help. Yoga will be held today from noon - 1:00 p.m. in the Marshall Room and tai chi will be held from 5 - 6 p.m. in the Century Room.

Does Your Vehicle Have the Heart of a Hero?

Does your car/van/truck have the heart of a hero - to bring meals to our neighbors in need? The green voyager that has passionately delivered meals for the Campus Kitchen for the last few years still has the heart but no longer the ability to do it all the time.

Is anyone able to speak for their vehicle and volunteer it to deliver occasional meals? Our delivery times are Tuesday 3:30 - 5 p.m. and Thursdays 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 3 - 5:30 p.m. It'd be great if you yourself could tag along and help with deliveries (especially the 3 - 5:30 p.m. shift), but if that is not an option, we have a solid team of responsible students that will take good care of it.

As you may know, our longtime colleague John Knight, formerly the director of development at Augsburg and for the past two years the Associate Director of the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning, has embarked upon a new personal and professional adventure. He has joined the staff of Desiring God Ministries with responsibilities for fund development and strategic planning. Desiring God is a non-profit ministry organization birthed from his church several years ago. Though we are sad to see him leave Augsburg, we are happy that he will be using his considerable skills to fulfill this important new role.

Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College -- TODAY

TODAY, Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.

I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military-connected students we have at Augsburg. There were 73 students this past term who were veterans or currently serving military members, and that number is expected to grow to about 80 in January -- many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.

To help in understanding and better our institution's ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris and three others will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues that these soldiers face.

Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program that the Minnesota National Guard has developed, which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.

The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.
