Servant Leadership Discussion Feb. 7

Please join us on Thursday, Feb. 7 for an exploration of the profoundly moving ideas behind servant leadership and how they can be applied in our lives.

The Servant-Leader: Grounded in Service, Guided by Questions
Carol Knicker and Patty Park, panelists
Norma Noonan, facilitator
Minneapolis Room, Christensen Center
6 p.m., refreshments at 5:30 p.m.

In part because of its poetic and metaphoric quality, servant leadership has been subject to a broad range of interpretation. Greenleaf, aware of the elusive quality of his servant-leader model, offered his readers helpful guidelines in determining true servant leadership. He wrote that the best test for servant leadership lies in asking and re-asking fundamental questions: “Do those being served grow as persons?” “What is the effect on the least privileged in society?” Yet another of his questions highlights the importance of intention: “What are you trying to do? -- one of the easiest to ask and most difficult to answer of questions.”

For more information or to reserve a space, contact Patty Park at 612-330-1150 or parkp@augsburg.edu.

Changes to Summer Study Abroad Programs

There have been a few changes to the Summer Faculty-led Programs coming up in a few months. First, student application deadlines have been extended to March 1 for the "Sustainable Cities" program to Canada and for the "Exploring the Migrant Trail" in Mexico. Second, two programs have had to be canceled due to low enrollment; these are the "Art & the Middle Age" program to France and the "International Business" program to Germany. The other two programs are continuing as planned; "Experiences in Thai Education & Culture" in Thailand and "WWII & Its Aftermath" in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.

For more information on these programs, or to apply for the programs whose deadlines have been extended, visit the Augsburg Abroad web site at http://www.augsburg.edu/augsburgabroad/

Ways to Live Green

MPIRG would like to address the entire student, staff, and faculty body with a little education on how to live more "green." We know what a huge success Focus the Nation was, and if you wish you could help out more, here are some great ways:

1.) Turn OFF lights and turn UP the love! When you turn off lights when they aren't in use, you're saving energy.

2.) Wash your dishes by hand...using an older dishwasher can take 14 gallons of water!

3.) UNPLUG all appliances that are not in use (cell phone charger, iPod, etc.)

4.) Use lamps in stead of overhead lights. Use energy efficient bulbs when possible.

5.) Turn the heat down (just one notch at first). Wear warmer clothes, bundle up, and use blankets to keep energy levels down. Also, if you leave for a weekend, turn the heat way down, or even off.

6.) Buy locally - an easy and healthier way to shop in our area!

7.) Eat less meat! (This is more possible especially now that it's the advent season). It takes 12 pounds of grain to equal 1 pound of meat. There would be enough food for the whole world if everyone stopped eating meat. If you have to eat meat, choose local farms where the animals are not caged or fed hormones, aka "free range".

8.) Use natural sunlight when available. Open your blinds and let the sun shine in!

9.) Use a power strip for your computer, printer, etc. TURN OFF the power strip when computer is not in use.

10.) Use mesh or cloth bags instead of paper or plastic. Did you know that a BRAND NEW TREE is cut down for every single paper bag that is used at the grocery store?
