Salvadoran Popular Education Team on Campus TODAY

One of the renowned innovators today in the field of Popular Education is Equipo Maíz, a group based in El Salvador. They started their work in 1983 in the middle of the war there. Many of the Center for Global Education's International Travel Seminars and Semester Programs meet with the "Corn Team" during their stay in El Salvador.

Equipo Maiz helps people discover how their daily lives and communities are connected to the larger world. Through this understanding, people are then able to form opinions and decide how to create positive change in their community, their country, and the world.

Come meet two members of Equipo MAIZ!
Pick up your lunch in the cafeteria and join them to learn all about their creative and empowering educational techniques.

WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 6, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: The Century Room, Christensen Center

WHAT: Popular Education is a collection of politics and pedagogy that is about the liberation and empowerment of communities. This tradition was stimulated by the work of Paulo Freire in Brazil in the late 1960s, and subsequently spread throughout Latin America and the world through movements for social justice.

Equipo Maíz produces wide-ranging curricula and conduct training around the world. To learn more, visit www.equipomaiz.org.sv/HisTodo.html

Faculty Scholarship Forum

Faculty Scholarship Forum

Thursday Feb. 28, 2008
4 - 5:45 p.m.

*Oren Gateway Johnson Conference Center*
*Gage Gallery*

In order to build our academic community and recognize the professional work of colleagues, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of the Dean invite your participation in the Faculty Scholarship Forum. This event is an opportunity for faculty to showcase their research and creative projects. The format involves two rounds of presentations to a generalist audience: 4 - 4:40 p.m. and 5 - 5:40 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28. Wine and appetizers will be offered during the “intermission.”

You are invited to present in one time slot and learn about other colleagues’ work in the second slot. Each presenter gives a 20 minute roundtable talk followed by 15 minutes of discussion with an audience of six to eight faculty and staff colleagues. Please bring handouts or objects as no electronic support is available for this type of presentation. If you need a particular time slot to present, let us know.

Faculty from all disciplines create scholarship throughout their careers. This event is a wonderful opportunity to discover what that looks like from many different perspectives. We hope this forum will showcase the work of a diversity of colleagues. Faculty recently returned from sabbatical, as well as colleagues who received research and travel grants are particularly encouraged to participate. This is also an excellent venue for newer faculty members to introduce their talents. Your participation as an audience member is essential. And this is fun. Please join us in celebrating this vibrant aspect of our professional life together.

NEW: Very brief abstract forms are available on the CTL webpage and should be submitted online at www.augsburg.edu/ctl. We plan to offer 12-14 different presentations (six to seven different faculty each round) and to repeat this forum with different presenters next November. If this model is successful, we hope to offer the Forum as a regular event twice a year.

Details are on the web site and questions are welcome to: pike@augsburg.edu.

On-line Abstracts due Feb. 22.

NB: This event replaces the faculty presentations at Zyzzogeton, which will be held in April and focus on student work.

Greg Mortenson, author of the New York Times bestseller "Three Cups of Tea," is scheduled to be a presenter at this year's Peace Prize Forum. He has established schools in the most remote poverty stricken parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and is the founder of nonprofit Central Asia Institute and Pennies For Peace.

Given this wonderful opportunity to hear him speak at the Peace Prize Forum, we have decided to change our winter book selection to his book, "Three Cups of Tea."

“Three Cups of Tea is one of the most remarkable adventure stories of our time. Greg Mortenson’s dangerous and difficult quest to build schools in the wildest parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan is not only a thrilling read, it’s proof that one ordinary person, with the right combination of character and determination, really can change the world.” - Tom Brokaw

We will meet the following dates in the Riverside Room from noon - 1:15 p.m. to discuss the book:

Feb. 13, 2008
March 5, 2008

All staff members are welcome! Books will not be provided this time, so please obtain your own if you would like to participate. This book can be found in the Augsburg bookstore, as well as at other retailers and online sites. Holman Named MIAC Women's Track Athlete of Week

Augsburg's Whitney Holman named MIAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/020508holman.html

MINNEAPOLIS (2/5/08) -- Augsburg College women's track and field athlete Whitney Holman (SO, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

Holman earned the conference honors after claiming a win in the women's 55-meter dash in a conference-best time at the Bethel Invitational on Saturday. Holman won the event in 7.50 seconds, the fastest time run by a MIAC female in the event so far this indoor season. Her time is edging closer to the NCAA Division III national meet provisional qualifying time of 7.32 seconds. Also at the Bethel meet, Holman also finished third in the 200-meter dash in 27.78 seconds, currently the sixth-fastest time in the conference in the event.

Holman has been Augsburg's top women's sprinter the past two seasons. As a first-year student last year, Holman earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors during the indoor season with a fourth-place finish in the 55-meter dash and fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash at the 2007 MIAC indoor championships. At the 2007 MIAC outdoor championships, Holman just missed earning All-MIAC honorable-mention honors, finishing seventh in the 100-meter dash.

A two-sport athlete at Augsburg, Holman earned 2007 All-MIAC honorable-mention honors as a forward/defender on the Augsburg women's soccer team. Holman showed her versatility in 2007 by moving from forward to defense midway through the campaign. She finished the 2007 campaign with one goal and one assist for three points, and has five goals and four assists for 14 points in her two-season career (36 games, 36 starts).

Augsburg competes at the Carleton Meet of the Hearts on Saturday (2/9) at 11 a.m. in Northfield, Minn.

MINNEAPOLIS (2/5/08) -- Augsburg College men's hockey forward Cory Ellertson (FY, Albert Lea, Minn.) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

Ellertson earned MIAC Player of the Week honors for his five-point weekend (two goals, three assists) against Gustavus Adolphus College. Ellertson had a hand in every goal in Friday’s 4-3 Augsburg win at Gustavus, assisting on the first two tallies and scoring two power-play goals, including the game-winner with 1:35 left in the third period. In Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Gusties in Minneapolis, Ellertson assisted on Augsburg's lone goal, a power-play tally at the 4:05 mark of the first period.

Ellertson is now third on the team in scoring (seven goals, four assists, 11 points), including four power-play goals, tied for the team high. Ellertson currently stands seventh among MIAC first-year athletes in total points, with his seven goals tied for third-most among league first-year players.

Augsburg, now 3-14-2 overall and 1-9-0 in MIAC play, has a conference series at Concordia-Moorhead this weekend, with Friday's (2/8) game at 7 p.m. and Saturday's (2/9) game at 2 p.m.
