Financial Information

To keep the College Community updated on the current status of the College's finances, I have posted the recently completed audit report and the current budget status.

The information can be found in my public folder within the Department of Finance and Administration. J:\Finance and Administration\myren\public

The audit report is for the fiscal year ended May 31, 2007. The Budget Status folder contains the budget versus actual through December 2007 for the unrestricted current fund of the college, the balance sheet for the same fund, and a brief analysis of the current information.

It is our intent to keep this folder current with the most recent college-wide budget information.

Please also remember the brown-bag information session on the current financial highlights that has been scheduled on Feb. 6 at noon in the Minneapolis Room.

Youth Sustainability Confabulation

We want you! If you are college student, teenager, young farmer, aspiring farmer or just a regular person under the age of 35 who cares about sustainability issues and thinks the future is an exciting, yet slightly scary place, you need to attend the Youth Sustainability Confabulation (YSC) on Friday, Feb. 1 from 2 - 8 p.m. at Gustavus Adolphus College in St Peter, MN.

A Confabulation, or “Confab,” is an informal talk, a discussion, a chat. The YSC is designed to amplify the voice of youth, and it is an opportunity to make your perspectives, ideas, concerns and solutions heard. Connect with other innovative, future-focused and concerned young adults who may share parts of your worldview, but who also bring a unique perspective to the Confab. Finally, we will work to identify and promote youth leadership aspirations and ability. You will lead us toward a more sustainable future, and we have a vested interest in your voice. You ARE our future.

At the Confab, a World Café setting will guide you through a series of informal, thought-provoking, small group discussions. You will discuss a wide range of sustainability issues, along with the forces that are driving change in the world today, and envision scenarios of how the future might unfold. Music and video clips will inspire the discussions. The afternoon will wrap up over tapas (made with local ingredients), a panel discussion and interaction with the "elders" of sustainability.

We want to involve you as future leaders in designing sustainable food, energy, and agricultural systems. SFA will announce internships for college-age youth who seek deeper experiences outside of the classroom that will connect them with sustainable farmers, farming systems, farm marketing, and food and farm-related events. Our partners will announce future leadership and learning opportunities to broaden your knowledge and experience.

For more information, contact Anne Borgendale, communications@sfa-mn.org or (320) 226-6318. Register online at www.sfa-mn.org. RSVP for free on-campus lodging so you can attend SFA of MN’s 17th Annual Conference – “Local Foods: The Next Step” on Saturday, Feb. 2.

Youth Sustainability Confab Basics:
Who: Young adults (under 35 years old) to discuss a wide range of sustainability issues, connect with others and have a good time
When: Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, 2 - 8 p.m. (Youth Sustainability Confab Celebration starts with tapas at 5 p.m.)
Where: Jackson Campus Center, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN
Cost: FREE to those 35 years and under (includes tapas!)
YSC is hosted by the Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota in partnership with the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, Gustavus Adolphus College and others.

*The Sustainable Farming Association of Minnesota is a non-profit organization with a wide range of farmer and non-farmer members across Minnesota. It supports the development and enhancement of sustainable farming systems through innovation, demonstration, education, and farmer-to-farmer networking. SFA is working to develop and expand on-campus and on-farm experiential learning opportunities in sustainable agriculture for college-age youth.

Campus Dining Services

We have listened to the campus community. Through various means, including surveys, the 95 Theses, and various committees, we have heard consistent concerns about the quality of service offered by our current campus food services provider. Accordingly, we have decided to conduct a search process to determine who can best meet our needs to provide dining services to our campus community.

I am in the process of selecting a committee of students, faculty, and staff who will review a Request for Proposal (RFP), that outlines our objectives for food service on campus and that will be sent to potential service providers. The committee will review the responses to the RFP, taste test samples, visit other campuses and interview the finalists. The committee will then choose the best candidate to provide food services for Augsburg.

The committee will keep you posted as this process unfolds during the next several months.

The quality of food we eat and service we receive are critical to the health and well-being of our campus community. Routinely evaluating this contract, as well as the provision of all services on our campus, is sound business practice. It appears that quite some time has passed since our current food service contract has been thoroughly evaluated. We certainly anticipate that our current provider, Sodexho, will respond to the RFP, and along with responses from other potential providers, we look forward to this important opportunity to ensure that our food service and catering operations are aligned with Augsburg's mission and vision.

Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.

I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military-connected students we have at Augsburg. There were 73 students this past term who were veterans or currently serving military members, and that number is expected to grow to about 80 in January -- many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.

To help in understanding and better our institution's ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris and three others will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues that these soldiers face.

Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program that the Minnesota National Guard has developed, which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.

The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.
