Conference Opportunity

The Center for Teaching and Learning has money available to send four faculty or staff to the Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching and Learning February Conference, “Critical Thinking in the Age of the Internet.” The conference is Feb. 15-16 at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel. Further information is available at the Collaboration web site www.collab.org.

Applications are available in the Center for Teaching and Learning. In order to take advantage of the early bird special applications will be due on Jan. 22 in CTL.

Please note on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 21, there are no classes on the Minneapolis and United campuses. Rochester classes will be held that night. There will be a MLK Day Convocation at 1 p.m. in the Foss Chapel. Student, staff and faculty are encouraged to participate.

Soup & Sexuality on Tuesday, Jan. 22

The first Soup & Sexuality for 2008 will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 22 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Century Room.

Please mark this time on your calendar and join us for free lunch and some fascinating conversation around the topics of gender identity and sexual orientation. All students, staff, and faculty are welcome to this relaxed and informal time for story-telling. Plus, come check out some new items on the menu while you're here!

Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - Friday

Every day we acquire new knowledge and skills; we learn through our experiences. In order for us to learn a fact or skill, the neurons in our brains must permanently change the way they function. This is called neural plasticity. On Friday, Jan. 18, Dr. Katherine Bradley, a prospective job candidate for biology, will speak about neural plasticity in the striatum, the brain region that responds to rewarding properties of behavior. The seminar will be held from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. in SCI 123. Refreshments will be served.

Writing Lab Opens Monday, Jan. 21

The Augsburg College Writing Lab will open for spring semester on Monday, Jan. 21. The Lab is located on the main floor of Lindell Library, to the left of the entrance. Regular hours are as follows:

Monday: 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Tuesday: 3 - 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 - 10 p.m.
Wednesday: 3 - 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 - 9 p.m.
Thursday: 3 - 5:30 p.m.
Friday: 6 - 8 p.m.
Sunday: 5:30 - 8 p.m.

Stretch and Strengthen Session TODAY

Counseling and Health Promotion reminds all interested students, faculty, and staff that the second session of stretch and strengthening will be offered today from noon - 1 p.m. in the Marshall Room. This session replaces yoga this week and next week.

Please feel free to join instructor Andrea DuKane for these sessions. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a mat.

Welcome Back to ABO Chicago Trip Participants

Congratulations to the members of the Augsburg Business Organization who returned to campus late Sunday after spending 5 days in Chicago. During their visit, the 23 students along with faculty advisor Marc Isaacson had the opportunity to visit / tour the Chicago Board of Trade, Chicago Mercantile, and the Federal Reserve. In addition, the group got to hear three different presentations from Augsburg Alums ranging from the class of 1967 to 2005. Each of the speakers shared their unique career / vocational stories and provided students with advice and inspirations as they begin to plan their careers after Augsburg.

Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.

I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military-connected students we have at Augsburg. There were 73 students this past term who were veterans or currently serving military members, and that number is expected to grow to about 80 in January -- many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.

To help in understanding and better our institution's ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris and three others will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues that these soldiers face.

Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program that the Minnesota National Guard has developed, which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.

The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.

World Visions Staff Book Group – Schedule Change

After our last announcement, we received an excellent suggestion to add the book "Three Cups of Tea," by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, to our 2007-2008 schedule. Author Greg Mortenson is one of the plenary speakers scheduled to appear at the 2008 Peace Prize Forum.

"Three Cups of Tea" will replace "A Thousand Splendid Suns" on our reading schedule. Again, participants will be responsible for obtaining their own book. "A Thousand Splendid Suns" will be added to the schedule at a later date.

Spanish Conversation and Lunch

Spanish conversation and lunch will start next Thursday, Jan. 24, from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The exact room in Christensen will be announced next week and signs will be posted. This is in informal group that has the goal of giving people a chance to chat in Spanish in a stress-free environment. Drop in for 10 mins. or for the whole 90 mins. -- whatever works for you! Intramural's Table TODAY in Christensen Center

Keep an eye out for an intramural table set up in the Christensen Center Lobby today from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. There will be rosters available for five-on-five basketball with a representative present to take questions and suggestions for additional activities.

Furthermore, Intramurals is still taking rosters for the first eight teams to sign-up for each of the two divisions, being both a men's or a women's/co-ed league. (The number of teams could be subject to change -- however, turn in your completed rosters as soon as possible to ensure yourself a spot!)

The sign-up deadline is currently Monday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m., with the start date still to be determined.
