Challenges of Combat Veterans Returning to College

Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, from 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. in Sateren Auditorium.

I am sure many of you are well aware of the large number of returning military from Iraq deployments and that our Minnesota National Guard has experienced one of the longest unit deployments since WWII for a National Guard unit. You may not be aware, however, of the large number of military-connected students we have at Augsburg. There were 73 students this past term who were veterans or currently serving military members, and that number is expected to grow to about 80 in January -- many of these students have recently returned from deployment. They face unique challenges.

To help in understanding and better our institution's ability to provide a successful academic environment, we have set up a unique educational event for faculty and staff. Chaplain John Morris and three others will be here on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008 to speak about reintegration issues that these soldiers face.

Chaplain Morris is the person in charge of the reintegration program that the Minnesota National Guard has developed, which is soon to become the national model for returning National Guard Units.

The members of the Military Support Group (Ann Garvey, Michael Bilden, Karena Jones, Sadie Curtis, and Wayne Kallestad) invite you to attend this event.

Two Auggies Named as Division-III Baseball Players to Watch

Augsburg's Rick Andersen, Craig Henry named among Division III "Players to Watch" by Collegiate Baseball newspaper

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/010808baseball.html

MINNEAPOLIS (1/8/08) -- Augsburg College baseball players Rick Andersen (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Craig Henry (SO, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) were among nine Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players recently listed in the NCAA Division III "Players to Watch" list by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

The list of players to watch was compiled by Division III baseball coaches and included in the January issue of Collegiate Baseball, a newspaper that covers all levels of college baseball. A total of 273 athletes were listed.

Henry developed into one of the top catchers in the MIAC last season, earning a spot as one of only two first-year players to be named to the 27-member All-MIAC team. Henry led the team in hitting in 2007 with a .395 (45-of-114) average, finishing with team highs of 17 RBI, 15 doubles, two triples, two home runs and a .614 slugging percentage. He scored 25 runs, second-most on the team. Defensively, Henry had a .960 fielding percentage, with just seven errors in 177 chances. He also threw out 12 baserunners trying to steal.

His .395 batting average was eighth-best among MIAC players in overall statistics in 2007, while his 15 doubles were tied for second-best and his .614 slugging percentage was 11th-best. His 12 runners caught stealing was third-best among MIAC catchers. In league games-only, Henry's .403 batting average was eighth-best among MIAC players, while his .701 slugging percentage in MIAC play was 10th-best.

Andersen started nine games in the outfield and five as a designated hitter last season, finishing third on the team in hitting with a .367 (18-of-49) batting average, with four RBI, five doubles, a home run, a .531 slugging percentage and .429 on-base percentage. His .367 batting average was 15th-best among MIAC players in overall statistics in 2007. He had five multi-hit games in 2007.

Augsburg finished 18-19 overall, 10-10 in MIAC play in 2007, finishing in a tie for fifth place in the league standings. Head coach Keith Bateman, now 76-79-1 overall entering his fifth season in 2008, has recorded double-digit win seasons in each of his previous four seasons at Augsburg.

Augsburg opens its 2008 season on March 1 with a 10 p.m. doubleheader against Edgewood (Wis.) at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
