Updated Curriculum Committee Forms

Faculty submitting proposals to any of the curriculum committees (Academic Affairs Committee, Graduate Academic Affairs Committee, AugCore Subcommittee and Committee on Academic Planning) should always download the appropriate form from the Academic Affairs public folder, where the most current versions are located. Committees periodically refine questions asked on these forms (e.g., New Course Proposal Form, Course Revision Form) and updated versions are kept current in this public folder for your use.

World Visions Staff Book Group - Book Two

The World Visions Staff book group is moving to their second book after an excellent start learning about Mexico and indigenous issues through the book "Lamentations," by Rosario Catellanos.

The next book is:

"Infidel," by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
A fascinating and controversial memoir by a Somali woman. "Ultimately a celebration of triumph over adversity, Hirsi Ali's story tells how a bright little girl evolved out of dutiful obedience to become an outspoken, pioneering freedom fighter. As Western governments struggle to balance democratic ideals with religious pressures, no story could be timelier or more significant.” (publisher description)

The first 10 to RSVP to Emily Cronk at cronk@augsburg.edu will receive a free book (there are six left!); at the end of our discussion, we will donate the free books to other communities. This book is also widely accessible at book stores and with online retailers.

Here are the two scheduled meeting times for this book:
Nov. 14 and Dec. 5, 2007

Time: Noon – 1:15 p.m.
Location: Riverside Room

No need to complete the book to attend the discussion. Please feel free to contact us with your ideas or questions.

Respectfully, the World Visions charter members: Emily Cronk, Lynn Ellingson, Kathy Fagen, Amy Greeley, Holley Locher, and Lisa Roe.

"Way of the Warrior" Film Screening

For poster, maps, and directions visit: www.augsburg.edu/ais/filmseries

Nov. 4: "Way of the Warrior" (Patty Loew, 2007), Hosted by Patricia Loew
Time: 6 - 8 p.m. Film Screening, Science 123
8:30 - 10 p.m. Reception (Wolves Den, 1201 E. Franklin Ave., Minneapolis, 612-871-6373)

Way of the Warrior uses personal stories of heroes and soldiers to examine the warrior ethic and to try to answer the question why, during the wars of the 20th century, Native men and women volunteered to serve in the U.S. military in numbers that far exceeded their proportion in the general population. These gripping stories from WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam weave a tapestry of positive and negative themes—the warrior ethic, prejudice and stereotypes, forced assimilation, poverty, cultural pride, redemptive acts and healing. The documentary uses historical footage, period photographs, Native music, personal diaries and interviews to reveal what it means to be “ogichidaa,” one who protects and follows the way of the warrior.

Joel Torstenson: 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27

Joel Torstenson's life and the many contributions that he made to Augsburg, Trinity and the wider community will be celebrated at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the Foss Center. Visitation will be at 4 p.m. and a reception will take place in the Atrium following the service. Joel graduated from Augsburg in 1938 and led the Sociology and Metro-Urban Studies programs beginning in 1947. Augsburg's understanding and embracing of what it means to be a "college of the city" is largely due to his work among us. As was celebrated in the book, SUCCESSFUL SERVICE-LEARNING PROGRAMS: NEW MODELS OF EXCELLENCE IN HIGHER EDUCATION, Joel Torstenson is the "giant on whose shoulders we stand." Joel was a colleague whose vision and leadership gave us much of what we do under the banner of experiential education, internships, community-based service-learning, Engaging Minneapolis, the Augsburg Experience, HECUA and CGE. Come and celebrate this life that has nourished so much of our life at Augsburg.
