Teaching and Learning

Disability Awareness Month:
Seminar on Students with Asperger's Syndrome

Learn more about Asperger's Syndrome at CTL's Friday Faculty and Staff Forum led by the staff of CLASS! This session will be held in Lindell 301 on Friday, Oct. 19 from 3:30 - 5 p.m. The program will start at 4 p.m., but feel free to come and ask questions during the gathering time.

October is National Disability Awareness Month. Based on Feedback from Augsburg Faculty, the CLASS Office presents: College Students with Asperger’s Syndrome, a discussion of impacts on learning and behavior in the classroom. Students with Asperger’s Syndrome attending Augsburg College have increased 1000% since 1998. While this is a national trend, it is very likely to impact teaching and learning within your classroom. Please join us for an interactive discussion. Faculty and Staff experiences and questions are welcome. Visit the Center for Teaching and Learning web site for more information: http://www.augsburg.edu/ctl/

-----------------------------------------------------------------

To help raise awareness during this month, we will be posting brief notes on how we as a community can be supportive of persons with disabilities.

Today's fact...

Typically, individuals with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) have difficulty with social and communication skills, as well as nonverbal communication skills. Many individuals with AS have good cognitive and verbal skills, and typically have normal to superior intelligence.

Some traits that are typical of Asperger's Syndrome, such as attention to detail and focused interests, can increase chances of university and career success. Many people with AS seem to be fascinated with technology, and a common career choice is engineering. However, scientific careers are by no means the only areas where people with AS excel.

Indeed, many respected historical figures have had symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome, some of which include Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Albert Einstein, Marie Curie, and Thomas Jefferson.

World Visions Staff Book Group - Book Two

The World Visions Staff book group is moving to their second book after an excellent start learning about Mexico and indigenous issues through the book "Lamentations," by Rosario Catellanos.

The next book is:

"Infidel," by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
A fascinating and controversial memoir by a Somali woman. "Ultimately a celebration of triumph over adversity, Hirsi Ali's story tells how a bright little girl evolved out of dutiful obedience to become an outspoken, pioneering freedom fighter. As Western governments struggle to balance democratic ideals with religious pressures, no story could be timelier or more significant.” (publisher description)

The first 10 to RSVP to Emily Cronk at cronk@augsburg.edu will receive a free book; at the end of our discussion, we will donate the free books to other communities. This book is also widely available at book stores and online retailers.

Here are the two scheduled meeting times for this book:
Nov. 14 and Dec. 5, 2007

Time: Noon – 1:15 p.m.
Location: Riverside Room

No need to complete the book to attend the discussions. Please feel free to contact us with your ideas or questions.

Respectfully, the World Visions charter members: Emily Cronk, Lynn Ellingson, Kathy Fagen, Amy Greeley, Holley Locher, and Lisa Roe.

Four Paws for Ability - Alexander's Quest

Hi,

You may have seen my post this past month about fund raising for my 6-year-old son with Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, anxiety disorder and mood disorder. How delighted I was to see a class on adults attending school with Asperger's Syndrome!

We are raising funds to get my son, Alexander, an Autism Service Dog from the "4Paws for Ability" non-profit organization. To find out more, please visit their web site at www.4pawsforability.org and click "Make a Dream Come True" to see Alexander's entry. This dog will be trained to help Alexander with meltdowns, trained in tracking to help find Alexander if he wanders off, give Alexander independence, and most of all give him a loving friend who loves him like we do…for the wonderful, God-given gift he is.

We have raised $5,000 so far for Alexander's service dog, but we still have $9,000 to go. We are selling Baker's Square pie certificates for $13.00 each ($4.50 of which goes to 4Paws) and Herberger's certificates - a $5.00 coupon book gets you $10.00 off any purchase and other additional discounts for the sale on Nov. 10 (all profits go to 4Paws). We also ask for donations directly to the organization. Please send your tax-deductible donation payable directly to 4 Paws For Ability, 253 Dayton Ave, Xenia, Ohio 45385. Include Alexander Lubrant’s name on the memo portion of the check. An account has been established in his name. For more information on 4 Paws, go to www.4pawsforability.org, or contact us at (763) 531-0921; slubrant0921@msn.com.

Thank you and God Bless
- Sally Lubrant (Mom & Augsburg Student)

Movie Night at the Augsburg House

The Jane Fonda film fun continues Wednesday, Oct. 24, with "JULIA," also starring Vanessa Redgrave and Meryl Streep. Popcorn and a show at 6:30 p.m. followed by a discussion. Hosted by Abigail Pribbenow at the Augsburg House, 2848 West River Parkway. Campus Security can escort you to the house if you need a ride. Call x1717 to make arrangements.

"JULIA"
From "Pentimento," the memoirs of late playwright Lillian Hellman, "JULIA" covers those years in the 1930s when Lillian attained fame with the production of her first play, "The Childrens' Hour" on Broadway. Not surprisingly, it centers on Lillian's relationship with her lifelong friend, Julia. It is a relationship that goes beyond mere acquaintance and one for which the word "love" seems appropriate. While Julia attends the University in Vienna, studying with such luminaries as Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein, Lillian suffers through revisions of her play with her mentor and sometimes lover Dashiel Hammett at a New England beachhouse. After becoming a celebrated playwright, Lillian is invited to a writers conference in Russia. Julia, having taken up the battle against fascism, enlists Lillian en route to smuggle money through Nazi Germany which will assist in the Anti-Fascist cause. It is a dangerous mission especially for a Jewish intellectual on her way to communist Russia. During a brief meeting with Julia on this trip, Lillian learns that Julia has had a child which is called Lilly. Shortly after returning to the States, Lillian is informed of Julia's murder. The details of her death are shrouded in secrecy. Lillian sadly travels to England to search for her namesake the child she had promised Julia to care for.

Wednesday, Nov. 7: "9 to 5" (with Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton)

Auggie Athletics

Last Day For Auggie Ultimate Tryouts is Tomorrow!

The last ultimate tryout will be held tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 19 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (please arrive 15 minutes early) on Edor Nelson Field. Tryouts are meant to determine the team(s) that will represent Augsburg College in a booming sport. Potential players are required to make only one of these dates. If these days do not work, please let me, Justin or Al know ASAP, so we can determine if we need another day of tryouts or something else.

Tryouts will be based on seven core skills of an ultimate player. These include endurance, throwing, catching, defense, offense, overall game-play and teamwork. To test these strengths, there will be several drills and exercises, including a 1-mile run with a target time between 6 and 7.5 minutes. Throwing will include forehand and backhand, nothing else. On the day of tryouts, please bring a white shirt and a dark shirt (people with gray shirts will be punished), a disc (if you have one, put your name on it), cleats (if you don't have cleats, wear flats; barefoot is not acceptable), water, and arrive 15 minutes early, as we will start on time.

*During all tryouts, we will be using UPA Rules

For more information, contact brownp@augsburg.edu or fever@augsburg.edu
