Subject: New Book Group for Staff: World Visions
Submitter:
Lynn Ellingson, Graduate Recruiter, Weekend College Admissions

Message: We are excited to launch a new book group for staff, “World Visions,” which will illuminate diverse perspectives from around the globe.

Our primary goals include learning about other cultures and worldviews, as well as building community on campus. And yes – we plan to have fun! We will launch a Moodle site to post additional resources and encourage additional discussions. We have received funding from workculture@augsburg to pay for most of our books. After our discussions, we plan to donate our used books to local community centers or CGE sites abroad.

Details: Throughout the academic year, we will discuss four books (fiction and non-fiction) and view one film. We are inviting guest speakers with expertise on the topic or region, including Augsburg professors and friends from the community. We will meet once a month, over the lunch hour, to accommodate busy schedules. (Wednesdays, Noon – 1:15) Each book will be discussed during two meetings. You will register for one book at a time, and may join us for one, two, or all five selections. The selections and schedule for the first 3 of the series are below.

If you’d like to participate in the discussions for book one, please RSVP to Emily Cronk ( cronk@augsburg.edu ) before September 14th. The first ten to rsvp will receive a free book; at the end of our discussion, we will donate our books to other communities.

Please feel free to contact us with your ideas or questions. Happy reading!

Respectfully,

World Visions charter members: Emily Cronk, Lynn Ellingson, Kathy Fagen, Amy Greeley, Holley Locher, and Lisa Roe.

Selections and Schedule:

Book 1: The Book of Lamentations, by Rosaro Castellanos.
Dates: Wednesday, September 26 and October 17 (Noon – 1:15)
Description: Our first book is in honor of CGE’s 25th anniversary! “A masterpiece of contemporary Latin American fiction, this novel transposes episodes from actual Maya uprisings in Chiapas in 1712 and 1868 to the 1930s. This book, by Mexico’s most important woman novelist of the twentieth century, combines historical events with modern times.” (Resource Center of the Americas synopsis)

Book 2: Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Dates: November 14 and December 5 (Noon – 1:15)
Description: A fascinating and controversial memoir by a Somali woman. "Ultimately a celebration of triumph over adversity, Hirsi Ali's story tells how a bright little girl evolved out of dutiful obedience to become an outspoken, pioneering freedom fighter. As Western governments struggle to balance democratic ideals with religious pressures, no story could be timelier or more significant.” (publisher description)

Film: Yi Yi, Edward Yang
Date: January (TBD)
Description: Taiwanese director Edward Yang’s 2000 film Yi Yi (A One and a Two) won the Best Director award at Cannes and Best Film from the National Society of Film Critics. Yang's best-known film is an absorbing three-hour portrait of a middle-class Taipei family over the course of one year, as fathers, mothers, and children follow their hearts down long and complicated paths. A sumptuously shot masterpiece of everyday drama, Yi Yi treats with great seriousness nearly every aspect of contemporary city life. (New York Magazine)
