Subject: What’s this “AA” - Academic Alert?
Submitter:
Sheila Anderson, Associate Director of Academic Advising, Academic Advising

Message: Have you checked your Augsburg e-mail account lately and found a message with the subject line “AA” and followed by your name? Perhaps you’ve avoided opening this message in fear of infecting your computer with a virus. Thankfully this isn’t another virus. It also isn’t a hoax. If you receive this message, you’ve gotten an Academic Alert from a concerned instructor. It’s important that you open and respond to the instructor’s academic issues.

Academic Alert is an electronic tool used by faculty to make students aware of academic concerns. It is often used in conjunction with individual meetings. An instructor will send an alert to an individual student when issues limiting academic success are identified. Some examples of reasons for sending an alert include: lack of class participation, poor performance on test or homework, and lack of attendance. The alert message is automatically sent to the student recipient, his or her faculty advisor, and members of the Academic Alert response team.

What should you do if you receive an alert? First and foremost, don’t ignore it. Students might think of the alert process as a warning call. It is meant to identify issues and give you a chance to resolve them. Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away. Next, we encourage alert recipients to speak with the faculty member submitting the message. This helps to clarify issues and determine options. Finally, decide how you to resolve the issue(s). Some factors to consider when making your decision include: course requirements, financial aid, withdrawal deadlines and enrollment status. Advisors are available in many offices to assist you evaluating your options. Please feel free to contact any of the resources listed in the alert message for assistance in evaluating your options.

Subject: MUE 129 Music Improv Combo Ensemble
Submitter:
Kent Christian McGuire, Instructor, Music

Message: It is not too late to register for the coolest ensemble course on campus

All students and at any level of proficiency (and any instruments) are welcome!

This Wednesday we will meet at the posted class time as scheduled, BUT I will be on campus both prior and after class to meet with those of you who have conflicts. (I teach another class on Wednesdays between 12:10-1:10 in Room M23, then I hang out for a bit until the Improv Class. Track me down or call me on my cell phone (651-270-5807)

Ideally, I'd like for everyone to be available either before or after 3:30 on this first day of class so that we have a chance to meet each other.

Lets try to hammer out a schedule for us all to meet as a class. Also lets try to find a time on your own to practice as a group (speaking of which, start brainstorming for a "band name")

Bring your instruments plus any MUSIC (recordings, printed notation, tab) that you would like the ensemble to attempt.

KCMcG

Sincerely,
K. Christian McGuire

Subject: Academic Alert Reminder
Submitter:
Sheila Anderson, Associate Director of Academic Advising, Academic Advising

Message: The Academic Alert system is up and running for the term. Thanks to each of you who submitted Academic Alert messages in previous terms. We hope you will continue to use Academic Alert. All Instructors, Day/Weekend, regular/adjunct, are encouraged to send an alert message to a student when academic problem areas are identified. Problem areas might include, but are not limited to: lack of attendance, unprepared for class, poor performance on test and assignments, and or lack of participation. Academic Alert is not meant to replace face to face interaction with students. Each of you likely addresses academic issues with students as they arise. The alert message can however be used in addition to speaking with the student and/or when you have been unable to reach them via phone or e-mail. The electronic alert message replaces the paper format of the Mid-Term Progress Report. We hope that by reporting concerns early, students will have greater opportunity to correct the situation and salvage the course.

Now is the perfect time to report students who have never attended your course(s). This gives us an opportunity to contact students and process withdrawal paperwork as needed. The Academic alert message is generated from the Augnet Records and Registration class roster. When logged into Augnet, click on Records and Registration. From Records and Registration, go into the appropriate class roster. You’ll see a “Prepare Alert” link next to each student’s name. Click on the link to access the alert message system. You can also access the alert system through Augnet Administrative Tasks.
Please contact me (andersos or X1777) if you have difficulty using the academic alert system.

Subject: New Book Group for Staff: World Visions
Submitter:
Lynn Ellingson, Graduate Recruiter, Weekend College Admissions

Message: We are excited to launch a new book group for staff, “World Visions,” which will illuminate diverse perspectives from around the globe.

Our primary goals include learning about other cultures and worldviews, as well as building community on campus. And yes – we plan to have fun! We will launch a Moodle site to post additional resources and encourage additional discussions. We have received funding from workculture@augsburg to pay for most of our books. After our discussions, we plan to donate our used books to local community centers or CGE sites abroad.

Details: Throughout the academic year, we will discuss four books (fiction and non-fiction) and view one film. We are inviting guest speakers with expertise on the topic or region, including Augsburg professors and friends from the community. We will meet once a month, over the lunch hour, to accommodate busy schedules. (Wednesdays, Noon – 1:15) Each book will be discussed during two meetings. You will register for one book at a time, and may join us for one, two, or all five selections. The selections and schedule for the first 3 of the series are below.

If you’d like to participate in the discussions for book one, please RSVP to Emily Cronk (cronk@augsburg.edu) before September 14th. The first ten to rsvp will receive a free book; at the end of our discussion, we will donate our books to other communities.

Please feel free to contact us with your ideas or questions. Happy reading!

Respectfully,

World Visions charter members: Emily Cronk, Lynn Ellingson, Kathy Fagen, Amy Greeley, Holley Locher, and Lisa Roe.

Selections and Schedule:

Book 1: The Book of Lamentations, by Rosaro Castellanos.
Dates: Wednesday, September 26 and October 17 (Noon – 1:15)
Description: Our first book is in honor of CGE’s 25th anniversary! “A masterpiece of contemporary Latin American fiction, this novel transposes episodes from actual Maya uprisings in Chiapas in 1712 and 1868 to the 1930s. This book, by Mexico’s most important woman novelist of the twentieth century, combines historical events with modern times.” (Resource Center of the Americas synopsis)

Book 2: Infidel, by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Dates: November 14 and December 5 (Noon – 1:15)
Description: A fascinating and controversial memoir by a Somali woman. "Ultimately a celebration of triumph over adversity, Hirsi Ali's story tells how a bright little girl evolved out of dutiful obedience to become an outspoken, pioneering freedom fighter. As Western governments struggle to balance democratic ideals with religious pressures, no story could be timelier or more significant.” (publisher description)

Film: Yi Yi, Edward Yang
Date: January (TBD)
Description: Taiwanese director Edward Yang’s 2000 film Yi Yi (A One and a Two) won the Best Director award at Cannes and Best Film from the National Society of Film Critics. Yang's best-known film is an absorbing three-hour portrait of a middle-class Taipei family over the course of one year, as fathers, mothers, and children follow their hearts down long and complicated paths. A sumptuously shot masterpiece of everyday drama, Yi Yi treats with great seriousness nearly every aspect of contemporary city life. (New York Magazine)
