Subject: Faculty Conversation - Faith and Learning

Submitter:
John Knight, Associate Director, Center for Faith and Learning

Message: On behalf of the Office of the Dean, the Religion Department and the Exploring Our Gifts Program, we would like to invite you to a conversation on the future of a proposed Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning. Please consider attending one of these two meetings:

Wednesday, April 4, 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Or
Monday, April 9, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Both conversations will be held in the Marshall Room.

David Tiede, Mark Tranvik, Phil Quanbeck and John Knight have made several presentations on this idea to the faculty, staff, senior College administration, volunteer leadership and alumni since last fall. You may also recall that this is a proposal to sustain the work of our Lilly grants, in accord with Augsburg 2004. We are moving ahead with our plans and we would like your feedback about the shape of the Center. The latest draft reflects conversations that we have had with a number of people, including many of you. Now we desire a wider conversation.

You can find a draft of a business plan proposal for the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning on the Exploring Our Gifts public drive, or feel free t email knightj@augsburg.edu and request a copy. We would like you to read the draft (number five) and respond to the following questions:

1. Can you advise or help us identify and articulate the desired educational results related to this proposal? (See especially Exhibit B among the appendices)

2. Can you advise us with regard to the work that will be required to produce the intended results in: a) faculty development, b) student engagement, c) public presence of the ACFL and the College?

3. Finally, is there anything else that you believe requires comment, evaluation or reevaluation?

Our desire is to incorporate as many ideas and insights into a new draft that will be presented to the Board of Regents at the end of April. If you are unable to attend one of these gatherings please feel free to send comments to Mark Tranvik, David Tiede, Phil Quanbeck II or John Knight.

Thank you for your participation in this worthy effort.

Faculty Scholarship Roundtables
Abstracts due March 30

On Thursday, April 19 we will host the Faculty Scholarship Roundtables. Please consider making a presentation in a roundtable setting on your current research, scholarship (broadly defined) and professional work. In particular, we hope this will become a forum for those recently returned from sabbatical (last fall and last spring) to share their learning with the campus; we hope to see most of you at this opportunity. Finally, this is a critical opportunity for all of us to model life long learning by attending these events and knowing what we are about as a college. Abstract forms are available on the CTL webpage, CTL public folder or by calling x1229.

Teaching and Brain Science –ne’er the twain shall meet? March 27 and 28. Bring what you have come to believe about brain science and learning and compare it with what some current experts have to say. How do the various ways we teach work with or against brain function? What does brain science tell us about crafting learning environments and experiences that are efficient and produce durable results?
Lindell 301

Brain science, ‘best practice’, and instructional design April 9 and 10. Bring your favorite ‘best practice’ guiding principles for an exploration of the relationship between these and brain science and how this can inform intentional choice in crafting learning experiences.
Cedar Room

The designing professor: changing students on purpose April 24 and 25. Bring a learning experience you’ve been working on to dip your pedagogical toes into the waters of design. We’ll work with a process that starts by identifying the change(s) we want in our students and progresses systematically (but not too fast!) to creating experiences that not only change and empower students, but also enable us to develop a habit of reflective empathy in our work.
