Subject: NA Heritage Month - Did You Know?

Submitter:
Cindy G Peterson, Director, American Indian Student Services

Message: As children growing up in the US we learn that Thanksgiving is about the Pilgrims and the Indians coming together for a feast. As is usually the case, the story might be different depending on the perspective of the principals involved. I encourage you to research for yoursleves the Native version of this national holiday.

For traditional Native people giving thanks for all of the gifts of creation and sharing what we have with others is a daily occurence. It is part of the culture.

A traditional feast today for my people consists of turkey or walleye, wild rice, fry bread, corn, blueberry pudding.

Traditional foods for other tribal nations: corn soup, posole, mutton stew, salmon, squash, beans, venison.

Wherever you are this holiday, whatever your traditions, I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Subject: Check Your Pay Stubs This Month

Submitter:
Linda M. Vlieger, Payroll / HRIS Coordinator, Human Resources

Message: In preparation for year-end 2006 and the mailing of W-2 forms in January, we ask you to review the items below and contact us right away with any changes or updates to your personal information on record with Payroll.

1) Verify the Name and Social Security Number on your pay stub

In order for your social security tax to be applied to your account correctly, two elements must be present: 1) The social security number must be correct; and, 2) the name on your pay stub must match the name on your social security card.

To help reduce the potential of identity theft, we normally do not print your social security number on your pay stub. However, once per year in November, we do print it on the pay stub so that you have an opportunity to verify its accuracy. Please take a moment to look at your November pay stub and verify that your social security number is correct. If it is not, please contact me at x1216 or Lor at x1052.

We require official documentation to change the name of an employee in our system. If your name has changed for any reason, and it does not match your pay stub, you must submit a copy of a revised social security card to Human Resources to update your employment record. If your social security card does not display the correct name, please call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local Social Security Administration office to resolve the discrepancy.

2) Verify the address on your pay stub

We will mail W-2 forms to your home address, so it is essential that we have the correct address on file. You may change your home address and phone number with Human Resources by sending the information via email to vlieger@augsburg.edu or yangl@augsburg.edu or by completing a Change of Address form available from Human Resources.

Subject: Faculty Volunteers Needed - "Augsburg Promise"

Submitter:
Barbara Edwards Farley, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College, Academic Affairs

Message: Faculty volunteers are needed to meet with the marketing consulting firm retained by the College for the "Augsburg Promise" initiative.

Mindpower has been on campus several times in past weeks, meeting with students, alumni, and some faculty and staff to collect stories about their Augsburg experiences. We would benefit from further faculty input in this process. Three faculty focus groups will be held on the dates and times specified below. These focus groups are designed to help us identify and articulate the promises we make to our students, to our community, and to each other -- and how well we keep those promises. The meeting dates and times are:

Wednesday, Nov. 29 8:30 - 10 a.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 29 4:30 - 6 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 30 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Please contact Kathryn Croyle at croyle@augsburg.edu or ext. 1171 if
you'd like to attend. Your stories are vital to the success of this work.

Subject: Science Labs

Submitter:
Wayne Kallestad, Registrar, Registrar's Office

Message: Most lab science courses will require a separate registration for the lab. When scheduling courses, be sure to register for both the course and the lab. Please check your active course listings on AugNet Records and Registration to ensure you are properly registered for both the lecture section and the corresponding lab section. Use the course listing on AugNet Records and Registration to determine if your science course does have a required lab.

Subject: Upcoming changes to residential internet

Submitter:
Erin S Voss, Student and Public Computing Co-Manager, Information Technology

Message: Beginning Monday, November 27, Student Computing will activate additional features of the Clean Access agent. Currently, the Clean Access agent is only being used to register computers on the Augsburg network. The features being activated will assist students in making sure their own personal computers are protected against viruses, and that all security updates are in place.

Specifically, the software will check to see if your computer has a recognized anti-virus program installed and up-to-date, and if the appropriate Windows updates and security patches have been installed (see note below). A list of recognized anti-virus programs is available at http://www.augsburg.edu/stucomp/resnet/CA_antivirus.html . The Clean Access agent will notify you of any items that need your attention.

It is important to note that the Clean Access agent will only be *checking* for anti-virus and Windows Updates at this time. Enforcement of the anti-virus and Windows Updates requirements will begin on Monday, January 8th. At that time, any Windows computer that does not meet these requirements will have restricted internet access in the residence halls until all security requirements are met. It is our hope that by starting the checking and notification process six weeks prior to the enforcement period that all students will have adequate time to make any required updates or changes.

--------------

NOTE: In order to download all necessary security updates and patches via Windows Update, Microsoft requires that a genuine copy of the Windows operating system be installed on your computer.

We encourage you to use the Windows Validation tool found at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/default.mspx as soon as possible to check to see if your copy of Windows is genuine.

If you discover that your copy of Windows is NOT genuine, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#Question5Label and follow the suggestions listed there. Student Computing will not be able to provide you with a valid license key!

---------------

Any and all questions and comments can be sent to Student Computing via e-mail to stucomp@augsburg.edu or you can contact the Student Computing Desk at 612.330.1400.

Subject: Neumann, Matson, Schreier named All-MIAC football
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Andrew Neumann, Mike Matson, Ricky Schreier named to All-MIAC football teams
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/112106football.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/21/06) -- Augsburg College's Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.), Mike Matson (Sr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Ricky Schreier (Sr., Maplewood, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) were named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football teams, it was announced on Monday.

Neumann, a tight end, and Matson, an inside linebacker, were named to the All-MIAC first team. Schreier, a wide receiver, was named to the second team. Matson was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. Each earned All-MIAC honors for the second time in their careers. Neumann was also a first-team selection in 2005, while Matson and Schreier were second-team selections.

Neumann finished this season with 741 receiving yards on 74 receptions, both totals tops among Augsburg receivers this season. He also scored four touchdowns this season. His receiving totals led Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tight ends for the second season in a row. Among all conference receivers in overall statistics, Neumann led the league in receptions per-game (10.0) and was fifth in receiving yards per-game (74.1). In league games-only statistics, Neumann was second in receptions per-game (7.75) and third in receiving yards per-game (75.8). Through the end of the regular season, Neumann ranked eighth nationally among NCAA Division III players in receptions per-game (7.4).

He became the fourth Augsburg player – and first tight end -- to reach the 2,000-yard plateau in career receiving yards, finishing with 2,006 career yards on 186 receptions (second-most in school history). He finished his career with seven receiving touchdowns.

Neumann is also the starting heavyweight on Augsburg's wrestling team. He earned his first trip to the NCAA Division III national tournament last season, and has a 54-30 career record on the wrestling mat.

This season, Neumann was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V first team for football. Neumann is an elementary education major with a 3.51 grade-point average. Last season, Neumann also earned Football Gazette All-West Region honorable-mention honors.

Matson led the Auggies this season with 110 tackles (46 solo), including 7.5 tackles for loss, one sack, three fumble recoveries and a blocked kick. For the second season in a row, Matson led the MIAC in both overall and conference-games-only (90) tackles. He had 28 more tackles than the second-place finisher in the MIAC's overall statistics, and was the lone MIAC player to average double-figure tackle totals per-game in both overall (11.0) and conference-games-only (11.2) play. His 11.0 tackles-per-game average ranked 20th-best nationally among NCAA Division III players at the end of the regular season.

Matson finished his career with 355 tackles (146 solo), including 21.0 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, four forced fumbles and three blocked kicks. He reached the century mark in tackles in both his junior and senior seasons.

This season, Matson was named to the 2006 Preseason All-Division III first team by Lindy's National College Football Preview magazine. Last year, he earned D3Football.com All-America third-team and All-West Region second-team honors, while also being named to the Football Gazette All-West Region third team.

Matson was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the conference is establishing sportsmanship teams in each league sport. Members are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Schreier finished the season second on the team in both receptions (61) and receiving yards (525), scoring two touchdowns. Among MIAC players in overall statistics, he finished third in receptions per-game (6.10), also finishing third in the category in conference-games-only (6.50). His 6.1 receptions per-game also ranked 26th-best nationally in the NCAA Division III statistics at the end of the regular season.

In his career, Schreier finished with 140 receptions (sixth-most in school history) for 1,563 yards and nine touchdowns. Adding his 843 return yards, including 788 yards on kickoff returns, he finished with 2,414 all-purpose yards in his career.

Schreier is also a starting outfielder on Augsburg's baseball team. He earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 2006. He hit .357 in 2006 and enters his senior season with a .338 career batting average.

Under second-year head coach Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 1-9 overall, 1-7 in MIAC play in 2006. Augsburg's roster was a young one this season, with 43 freshmen on the 82-player roster.
