Subject: Holiday Fire Safety Information

Submitter:
Bruce K Bengry, Safety Specialist, Public Safety

Message: Facts
• In 2003, 51 percent of all civilian fire deaths occurred between November and March
• Fire deaths in greater Minnesota outpace those in the metropolitan area by a rate of slightly over two to one.
• A dry Christmas tree can be consumed by fire in an instant, while generating enough heat to ignite an entire room.
• Holidays mean more time socializing with friends and relatives. In 2003, alcohol or other drug use was present or identified as a factor in one-third of all fire deaths and in 60 percent of fire deaths attributed to careless smoking.
Safe Behavior

Winter holidays can be a joyous time for all, if you practice holiday fire safety at home.
• Protect neighborhood homes this winter. Keep your nearest fire hydrant clear of snow.
• After holiday parties, check wastebaskets and furniture for smoldering cigarettes.
• Place holiday decorations well away from heat sources. If you use a tree, water it daily.
• Do not burn holiday wrappings in a fireplace; it may cause a chimney fire.
• Pay attention to cooking. If a pan is on fire, cover it with a lid. Water will spread the fire.
• Turn off and unplug lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving your house. Buy electrical decorations that have been approved by a national testing laboratory. Don’t overload outlets.
Candle Burning Safety Tips:
• Place candles on a secure surface in sturdy noncombustible holders that won't tip over. Make sure holders are big enough to catch drippings.
• Keep candles away from children and pets. Candles should be out of children's reach.
• Keep candles away from combustible items such as curtains, books, and paper. Remember the "three-foot rule" — anything combustible needs to be kept three feet from a heat source.
• Keep candles away from flammable liquids. Do not use a candle for light when fueling a kerosene heater or lantern. The flame may ignite the fumes.
• Avoid using candles during a power outage. A flashlight is a safer option. Don’t carry a lit candle.
• Remember to extinguish candles when leaving the room or going to sleep. Never leave children or pets unattended in a room with a lit candle.

Alia Scheirman and I are looking to start a group here on campus, where we'd knit for charity, called Knitting Knerds (cute huh?)

We need people who would be interested in getting involved including students, faculty, staff, and anyone you think would like to help out!

We need at least four people to get the group started, but we'd like more. If you are interested in being involved, please send me an email at: barnhill@augsburg.edu

If we get enough people interested, we're planning on launching the group at the beginning of next semester! We hope you want to be a part of this amazing new project!

If you don't know how to knit but you are interested, GREAT!! We'd love to teach you and help you learn, so don't hesitate to get involved!

Cheers!

Subject: Tickets Now on Sale!

Submitter:
Sarah E Teich, Student

Message: The Augsburg College Theatre Arts Department is excited to announce that tickets are now on sale for “Exceptionally Ordinary” and “No Exit.”

“Exceptionally Ordinary,” guest directed by David Deblieck, is a collection of movement-based vignettes featuring an ensemble of performers dancing though space with an array of objects and structures.

This piece performs together with “No Exit,” student directed by Justin Hooper. “No Exit,” by Jean-Paul Sartre, tells the story of three characters, a man and two women, who find themselves in hell. Since existence, for Sartre, is the will to project oneself into the future – to create one’s future – the opposite of existence, where man has no power to create his future, is hell.

The performances take place in the Foss Studio Theater. Performance dates are:

November 17 and 18 at 8 p.m.
November 19 at 2 p.m.

Tickets: $1 Augsburg College Students; $4 ACTC faculty, staff, and students; $5 general public.

For reservations and more information, please call 612-330-1257.

Subject: Matson, Neumann featured in Star-Tribune
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: In today's (Wednesday 11/15) Minneapolis Star-Tribune, there is a feature story on Augsburg football players Mike Matson (Sr., Cedar, Minn./St. Francis HS) and Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.). The story is on Page 2 of the Sports section in a weekly feature titled "10,000 Stories" by Michael Rand.

The story discusses how Matson and Neumann, two of the captains on this year's Auggie football team, are going to be attending Luther Seminary in the future with their goals of becoming ministers.

Matson, a linebacker, and Neumann, a tight end, finished their Auggie football careers last Thursday as part of a 28-17 victory over Hamline at the Metrodome. Both are among the top players in the MIAC at their positions.

Message: Five Auggies earn All-MIAC women's soccer honors
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/111406wsoccer.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/14/06) -- Five Augsburg College women's soccer players earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors, it was announced on Monday.

Senior defenders Aili Brom-Palkowski (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) and Shannon Olson (Sr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS) were named to the 20-member All-MIAC team, while forward Emily Anderson (Sr., Hudson, Wis.), goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (So., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) and defender Felicia Faison (So., Minneapolis, Minn./South HS) were among 23 conference players named honorable-mention all-conference. In addition, DeGroot was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

Brom-Palkowski and Olson, both four-year starters, were anchors of an Augsburg defense that allowed just 70 goals in their four years (72 games, 0.92 team goals-against-average). It's the first appearance for both Brom-Palkowski and Olson on an All-MIAC squad in their careers.

Brom-Palkowski scored three goals with one assist for seven points this season, while Olson had two assists as the team's sweeper. Brom-Palkowski appeared in all 72 games in her career, starting 71, while contributing seven goals and five assists for 19 career points. Olson appeared in 69 games in her career, starting 67, with one goal and two assists for four points in her career.

Anderson earned all-conference honors each of her four seasons as an Auggie, earning All-MIAC first-team honors in 2004 and 2005, and All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 2003 and 2006. Anderson finished third on the team in scoring this season, with four goals and two assists for 10 points, including three game-winning goals.

In her career, Anderson started 71 games, with 28 goals and 20 assists for 76 points. Each career scoring total is third-best in school history. She also contributed 13 game-winning goals in her career.

Faison earned all-conference honors for the first time in her career. She has started each Augsburg game as an outside defender in her two seasons (36 games), scoring one goal and two assist for four points this season.

DeGroot earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors for the second straight season. This season, DeGroot set a single-season school record with 10 shutouts this season. She broke the old single-season record of nine shutouts, set by Beth Petrik in 1997 and Laura Hoffman in 2002. Her 18 career shutouts are now third-most in school history. She has allowed just 25 goals in her two seasons, playing every minute in goal for the Auggies in that span.

She allowed just 12 goals in 18 games this season for a 0.64 goals-against-average and .881 save percentage. Her save percentage was second-best among MIAC goalkeepers in overall statistics, while her GAA was fourth-best. Her 0.62 GAA in league games only was fourth-best among conference goalkeepers, while her .875 save percentage was fifth-best.

DeGroot was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the conference is establishing sportsmanship teams in each league sport. Members are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Under eighth-year head coach Mike Navarre, Augsburg captured a third straight berth in the MIAC postseason playoffs and finished 10-6-2 overall, 7-3-1 in league play -- the team's fourth double-digit victory season in the past five years. Augsburg's 15 points in conference play this season were the most for an Auggie squad in the 21-season history of the program.

Subject: Holker MIAC Coach of Year, All-MIAC men's soccer

Message: Holker MIAC Men's Soccer Coach of Year; 5 Auggies earn honors
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/111406msoccer.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/14/06) -- Augsburg College head coach Greg Holker was named the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Coach of the Year, joining five Auggies who earned conference honors, it was announced on Monday.

Goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) and midfielder James See (So., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) earned All-MIAC honors, while defender Alex Hildebrandt (Fr., St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and midfielder Andrew Seidel (So., Woodbury, Minn.) were named honorable-mention all-conference. In addition, defender Cassidy Duerr earned All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team honors.

Holker has led a dynamic rebuilding of the Auggie men's soccer program since being named head coach in 2004. Taking a team that had won just five games in the year before he arrived, Holker's teams have shown strong improvement in each of his three seasons, including this year's 13-3-3 overall record and first-ever berth in the MIAC's four-team postseason playoffs. The Auggies finished 5-2-3 in league play for a third-place conference finish. Holker's career coaching record of 26-22-7 is now third-best in Augsburg history.

The Auggies' 13 wins this season were the second-most in a single season in school history, behind only the 15 wins in the team's MIAC championship season of 1975 (15-2-1), and the 13 points in league play were the most for the Auggies since their last MIAC title season in 1980 (11-1-3 overall, 9-0-3 MIAC, 21 points).

Augsburg had the longest unbeaten/unscored-upon string to start a season in all of NCAA Division III men's soccer this year, a streak that lasted for the first 10 games of the season (8-0-2). Augsburg's consecutive-game shutout streak was halted at 12 games, a span of 1,111:31 (981:31 this season). The streak is the fourth-longest in NCAA Division III history, behind the 17-game streak of Drew (N.J.) in 2003 and the 13-game streaks of St. John's (Minn., 1982) and Muhlenberg (Pa., 1998).

The Auggies' dramatic run this season came from a team with just three seniors and 26 underclassmen -- and all five Auggies who received conference honors this season were underclassmen. Venter and See were two of only six underclassmen to earn spots on the 20-member All-MIAC first team.

Venter was one of the top goalkeepers in all of NCAA Division III men's soccer in 2006. Venter set a single-season shutout record with 12 this year, breaking the old single-season mark of eight set by Augsburg Athletic Hall-of-Famer Mark Anderson in 1980. His 13 career shutouts are now second-most in school history.

Venter compiled a personal shutout streak of 1,101:05 (929:54 this season and 171:11 from last season), the third-longest individual goalkeeper shutout streak in NCAA Division III history. Peter Boyer of Drew (N.J.) holds the record of 1,428:00, set in 2003, while Terry Leiendecker of St. John's is second with 1,110:00, set in 1982.

As a team, Augsburg set records for most shutouts in a season (14) and lowest goals-against-average (0.30). The Auggies finished the regular season first among all NCAA Division III squads in team save percentage (.945), while Venter finished first in individual save percentage (.943) and third in goals-against-average (0.33).

See established himself as one of the top midfielders in the MIAC, with one goal and two assists for four points in 17 games (15 starts) in 2006. In his two seasons at Augsburg (34 games, 29 starts), he has one goal and three assists for five points.

Hildebrandt was one of only two freshmen to claim a spot among the 36 players who were named either All-MIAC or all-conference honorable-mention. A two-time Minnesota all-state selection and Pioneer Press State Player of the Year in 2005, Hildebrandt immediately stepped into the starting lineup as an outside back, starting 18 games and contributing three goals and three assists for nine points.

Seidel was the team's leading scorer for the second year in a row, with six goals and five assists for 17 points. Among MIAC players in overall play, Seidel finished tied for seventh in points and ninth in goals. In his two seasons at Augsburg (37 games, 31 starts), Seidel has nine goals and 12 assists for 30 career points. His 12 career assists are now seventh-most in school history.

Duerr was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the conference is establishing sportsmanship teams in each league sport. Members are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Duerr, an All-MIAC first-team selection last year, appeared in 19 games, starting 14 as a central back on the Auggie defense. He has appeared in 37 games (31 starts) in his two seasons.
