A-moodlin’ and A-wiki-n’ Around China

I have traveled the world around, and yet a recent trip to China blew my mind as my eyes were opened to one of the fastest developing nations in the world and its impact on biodiversity and global climate. My Bio102 students and I are reading and discussing E.O. Wilson’s /The Future of Life/, and how my worldview has been changed by China. We are examining different countries and "hotspots" to find solutions and “save our world” from global climate change. To do so I designed and implemented an online wiki project supported by a constructionists approach to education on Moodle. In this Friday seminar I plan to share my wiki on China along with some student examples, and some photos and ideas of how China changed my worldview.

Refreshments will be served at 3:30 in Lindell 301; the presentation begins at 4.

Subject: Please Check Your Last Pay Stub

Submitter:
Linda M. Vlieger, Payroll / HRIS Coordinator, Human Resources

Message: In preparation for year-end 2006 and the mailing of W-2 forms in January, we ask you to review the items below on your last pay stub for the 11/22/06 payday and contact us right away with any changes or updates to your personal information on record with Payroll.

1) Verify the Name and Social Security Number on your pay stub

In order for your social security tax to be applied to your account correctly, two elements must be present: 1) The social security number must be correct; and, 2) the name on your pay stub must match the name on your social security card.

To help reduce the potential of identity theft, we normally do not print your social security number on your pay stub. However, once per year in November, we do print it on the pay stub so that you have an opportunity to verify its accuracy. Please take a moment to look at your November pay stub and verify that your social security number is correct. If it is not, please contact me at x1216 or Lor at x1052.

We require official documentation to change the name of an employee in our system. If your name has changed for any reason, and it does not match your pay stub, you must submit a copy of a revised social security card to Human Resources to update your employment record. If your social security card does not display the correct name, please call 1-800-772-1213 or visit a local Social Security Administration office to resolve the discrepancy.

2) Verify the address on your pay stub

We will mail W-2 forms to your home address, so it is essential that we have the correct address on file. You may change your home address and phone number with Human Resources by sending the information via email to vlieger@augsburg.edu or yangl@augsburg.edu or by completing a Change of Address form available from Human Resources.

We appreciate your help and wish you a happy and safe holiday season.

Subject: Andrew Neumann named Academic All-American
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg's Andrew Neumann named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Team
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/113006neumann.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/30/06) -- Augsburg College tight end Andrew Neumann (Sr., Somerset, Wis.) was named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced on Thursday. Neumann was a second-team selection to the Academic All-America squad.

Neumann is an elementary education major with a 3.51 grade-point average. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V first team for football earlier this month.

The Academic All-America award is the latest in a postseason of honors for Neumann. He earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference first-team honors for the second season in a row, and was recently selected to play in the annual Aztec Bowl, an all-star game featuring top NCAA Division III seniors facing a Mexican national team, in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on Dec. 16. Last season, Neumann also earned Football Gazette All-West Region honorable-mention honors.

Since 1981, Augsburg student-athletes have earned 19 Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA. Neumann is the fifth Auggie football player to earn Academic All-America honors, and first since the 2001 season. Auggie football players have earned Academic All-America honors six times in school history (Scott Hvistendahl earned the honor in both 1997 and 1998).

Neumann finished this season with 741 receiving yards on 74 receptions, both totals tops among Augsburg receivers. He also scored four touchdowns this season. His receiving totals led MIAC tight ends for the second season in a row. Among all conference receivers in overall statistics, Neumann led the league in receptions per-game (10.0) and was fifth in receiving yards per-game (74.1). In league games-only statistics, Neumann was second in receptions per-game (7.75) and third in receiving yards per-game (75.8). Through the end of the regular season, Neumann ranked eighth nationally among NCAA Division III players in receptions per-game (7.4).

He became the fourth Augsburg player -- and first tight end -- to reach the 2,000-yard plateau in career receiving yards, finishing with 2,006 career yards on 186 receptions (second-most in school history). He finished his career with seven receiving touchdowns.

Neumann is also the starting heavyweight on Augsburg's wrestling team. He earned his first trip to the NCAA Division III national tournament last season, and has a 54-30 career record on the wrestling mat. He earned National Wrestling Coaches Association Scholar All-America honors in 2006.

As a high school athlete in Somerset, Wis., Neumann earned All-State honors and was a member of a Somerset squad that won a 2002 Wisconsin state championship. He earned all-conference honors twice. As a high school wrestler, he also won an individual state championship and finished with a school-record 125-18 career record. He qualified for state wrestling tournaments six times in his career, earning all-conference honors three times and all-region honors four times.

Under second-year head coach Frank Haege, Augsburg finished 1-9 overall, 1-7 in MIAC play in 2006. Augsburg's roster was a young one this season, with 43 freshmen on the 82-player roster.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program is administered by CoSIDA. Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs, who have already earned Academic All-District first-team honors, are eligible for inclusion on the team. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.20 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. The Academic All-America ballot is voted on by a committee of CoSIDA members.

Subject: Venter named to NSCAA All-Region soccer team
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Pascaul Venter named to NSCAA Division III All-Far West Region men's soccer team
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/113006venter.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/30/06) -- Augsburg College men's soccer goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) was named to the All-Far West Region Team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, it was announced on Thursday.

Venter was named to the third team on a vote of regional coaches. He was one of only five sophomores among the 33 players named to the three regional teams.

The regional honor is the latest in a postseason of honors for Venter. He also earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors this season, and earlier this week, was named to the D3Kicks.com All-America second team and All-West Region first team. ege soccer. Three All-American teams of 11 players each were selected, with Venter one of only six sophomores selected among the 33 players.

Venter was one of the top goalkeepers in all of NCAA Division III men's soccer in 2006. Venter set a single-season shutout record with 12 this year, breaking the old single-season mark of eight set by Augsburg Athletic Hall-of-Famer Mark Anderson in 1980. His 13 career shutouts are now second-most in school history.

Playing all but 141:37 of the team's 1791:43 in goal this season, Venter compiled a 12-3-3 record, making 99 saves (.943 save percentage) while allowing just six goals (0.33 goals-against-average).

Venter compiled a personal shutout streak of 1,101:05 (929:54 this season and 171:11 from last season), the third-longest individual goalkeeper shutout streak in NCAA Division III history. Peter Boyer of Drew (N.J.) holds the record of 1,428:00, set in 2003, while Terry Leiendecker of St. John's is second with 1,110:00, set in 1982.

As a team, Augsburg set records for most shutouts in a season (14) and lowest goals-against-average (0.30). Among all NCAA Division III squads in the national statistics (as of Nov. 19), Augsburg currently stands first in team save percentage (.945), second in team shutout percentage (0.74) and third in team goals-against-average (0.30), while Venter ranks first in individual save percentage (.943) and fourth in goals-against-average (0.33).

Under head coach Greg Holker, Augsburg finished 13-3-3 overall, qualifying for the MIAC four-team postseason playoffs for the first time in school history with a 5-2-3, third-place conference finish. The Auggies' 13 wins this season were the second-most in a single season in school history, behind only the 15 wins in the team's MIAC championship season of 1975 (15-2-1), and the 13 points in league play were the most for the Auggies since their last MIAC title season in 1980 (11-1-3 overall, 9-0-3 MIAC, 21 points).

Augsburg had the longest unbeaten/unscored-upon string to start a season in all of NCAA Division III men's soccer this year, a streak that lasted for the first 10 games of the season (8-0-2). Augsburg's consecutive-game shutout streak was halted at 12 games, a span of 1,111:31 (981:31 this season). The streak is the fourth-longest in NCAA Division III history, behind the 17-game streak of Drew (N.J.) in 2003 and the 13-game streaks of St. John's (Minn., 1982) and Muhlenberg (Pa., 1998).
