Subject: Introduction to GIS Programs

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:

The Metro-Urban Studies Program is pleased to announce a workshop, "Introduction
to GIS Programs," to be held on Monday, December 4 from 3:45 - 5 in the CTL
Resources Room Lindell 202.

GIS refers to Geographic Information Systems, which describes software that
maps social data, such as demographic information from the U.S. Census,
commuting patterns, labor patterns, etc. GIS is a great tool to use in your
classes to show how social characteristics have distinct spatial patterns. The
types of software we‚ll demonstrate are all free, internet-based, and easy for
you and your students to use. Some programs we’ll be showing are limited to
Minnesota, while others have data on the continental United States.

Nancy Fischer and Lars Christiansen, with the additional expertise of Amanda
Peterson, will be leading workshop participants through several GIS programs.
Even if you are not an urbanist, we guarantee that you'll find at least one of
these programs applicable to your work in the social sciences and humanities.

Please RSVP to Nancy Fischer at fischern@augsburg.edu by Wednesday, November
29th so that we have an accurate count of workshop participants. In your e-
mail, include any specific mapping questions/ideas that you would like us to
address.

We are looking forward to sharing these cool programs with you!

Nancy Fischer, Lars Christiansen, Amanda Peterson

Subject: NA Heritage Month - Did You Know?

Submitter:
Cindy G Peterson, Director, American Indian Student Services

Message: That Augsburg has a little more than $600,000 in endowed scholarships for American Indian undergraduate students.

When AISSP was first founded in 1978, Bonnie Wallace realized that the biggest need for AI students was financial aid. She was pretty agressive in raising funds to ensure aid opportunities for our students.

Two tribal nations have contribued funds: Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and Prairie Island Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Little Six, Inc. is also an donor.

Kraus-Anderson and Pillsbury Grand Met are two of the corporate donors.

All 12 of the scholarships we have work like a pool of money from which we are able to help as many AI students as possible.

Augsburg is one of 4 higher ed institutions in Minnesota, and the only private college, that receives money from the State legislature each year to train AI teachers.

Subject: Upcoming changes to residential internet

Submitter:
Erin S Voss, Student and Public Computing Co-Manager, Information Technology

Message: Beginning Monday, November 27, Student Computing will activate additional features of the Clean Access agent. Currently, the Clean Access agent is only being used to register computers on the Augsburg network. The features being activated will assist students in making sure their own personal computers are protected against viruses, and that all security updates are in place.

Specifically, the software will check to see if your computer has a recognized anti-virus program installed and up-to-date, and if the appropriate Windows updates and security patches have been installed (see note below). A list of recognized anti-virus programs is available at http://www.augsburg.edu/stucomp/resnet/CA_antivirus.html . The Clean Access agent will notify you of any items that need your attention.

It is important to note that the Clean Access agent will only be *checking* for anti-virus and Windows Updates at this time. Enforcement of the anti-virus and Windows Updates requirements will begin on Monday, January 8th. At that time, any Windows computer that does not meet these requirements will have restricted internet access in the residence halls until all security requirements are met. It is our hope that by starting the checking and notification process six weeks prior to the enforcement period that all students will have adequate time to make any required updates or changes.

--------------

NOTE: In order to download all necessary security updates and patches via Windows Update, Microsoft requires that a genuine copy of the Windows operating system be installed on your computer.

We encourage you to use the Windows Validation tool found at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/default.mspx as soon as possible to check to see if your copy of Windows is genuine.

If you discover that your copy of Windows is NOT genuine, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#Question5Label and follow the suggestions listed there. Student Computing will not be able to provide you with a valid license key!

---------------

Any and all questions and comments can be sent to Student Computing via e-mail to stucomp@augsburg.edu or you can contact the Student Computing Desk at 612.330.1400.
