Subject: Why Talk About Winter Weather?

Submitter:
Bruce K Bengry, Safety Specialist, Public Safety

Message: • Each year, dozens of Americans die due to exposure to cold. Add to that number, vehicle accidents
and fatalities, fires due to dangerous use of heaters and other winter weather fatalities and you have
a significant threat.
• Threats, such as hypothermia and frostbite, can lead to loss of fingers and toes or cause permanent
kidney, pancreas and liver injury and even death. You must prepare properly to avoid these extreme
dangers. You also need to know what to do if you see symtoms of these threats.
• A major winter storm can last for several days and be accompanied by high winds, freezing rain or
sleet, heavy snowfall and cold temperatures.
• People can become trapped at home or in a car, without utilities or other assistance.
• Attempting to walk for help in a winter storm can be a deadly decision.
• The aftermath of a winter storm can have an impact on a community or region for days, weeks or even months.

The National Weather Service issues various products for hazardous winter weather events. It is important for you to be familiar with these terms, so that you can prepare for the onset of dangerous weather.

Winter Storm Watch: Severe weather conditions may soon affect your area. These conditions may include heavy snow and blowing snow, freezing rain or sleet. If a watch is issued for your area, you should pay special attention to forecasts and statements.

Winter Storm Warning: Severe winter weather conditions are occurring or are expected within 12-24 hours. Most warnings are issued for heavy snow and wind, but warnings may also be issued for ice storms.

Blizzard Warning: Visibilities are reduced to less than 1/4 mile for several hours due to falling and/or blowing snow. The wind will be at least 35 mph.

Ground Blizzard Warning: Visibilities are reduced to less than 1/4 mile due to existing snow cover being blown around. The sky might be clear, but the strong winds cause near zero visibility in blowing snow.

Heavy Snow Warning: This is issued for snowfall of at least 6 inches in 12 hours, or 8 inches in 24 hours. Generally, this type of warning is issued for heavy snowfalls without any other weather hazards such as wind or freezing rain.

Wind Chill: The cooling effect upon exposed skin, produced by the combination of temperature and wind. Note that the wind chill is based on a formula revised in 2001. A copy of the new Wind Chill Chart is available on our web site.

Advisories: These are issued for conditions which warrant increased public awareness, but where the weather is not severe enough to merit a warning.

More detailed information concerning winter safety can be acquired by contacting the Minnesota Division of Homeland Security and
Emergency Management, your local county or city emergency management office, or your nearest National Weather Service office.

Subject: Travel to Prague and the Czech Republic in 2007

Submitter:
Joseph A Erickson, Professor, Education

Message: Travel to Prague and the Czech Republic: Join us for a journey of cross-cultural discovery on a travel seminar to Prague in late May and early June 2007. Experience contemporary Czech culture and society through paired courses in Education and Business.

Prague is considered by many to be the most beautiful city in Europe. This will be your home base for exploring both educational and economic forces that have created vast changes in Czech life. Developing capitalist enterprise in the former communist world offers significant challenges.

Examine the obstacles as well as the models that are succeeding in this period of transformation. Discover the critical role the educational system has in the formation of changing social norms and values of this emerging free market economy.

Proposed activities include:

· Converse with leaders of education, business and industry, about the promises and perils of privatization.
· Meet with families of varying economic means to speak about the impact of the free market economy on their lives.
· Tour Prague’s historic district and discover the rich culture of Czech life.
· Meet with government representatives about the process of entry into the European Union.
· Talk with people from various sectors of the community about how their lives have changed in this post-Soviet era of history.
· Meet with a NATO General to discuss the politics of the post-Cold War era.
· Visit Auschwitz, site of the World War II death camp.
· Travel to Krakow, Poland and hear stories from local people about economic and social relationships with their Czech neighbors.

Cost: Anticipated to be approximately $6,500 includes tuition, round-trip airfare, lodging, all meals, programming, exit/entry taxes, and ground transportation.

Application Deadline: January 31, 2007, but don't wait until the last minute--get more information and sign up now!

For more information, contact Professor Stuart Stoller at 612.330.1772, (stoller@augsburg.edu) or Professor Joseph Erickson at 612.330.1647, (erickson@augsburg.edu).

November 10, 2006

As some of you may already know, on Saturday, November 4 two Lutheran Pastors, Francisco and Jesus, were assassinated in El Salvador. Up to this date the motives of the crime are unknown. What we know is that both Pastors were committed and worked tirelessly with the Salvadoran Lutheran Church, concretely speaking in the area of Jayaque, were they lived and served different communities.

We ask you to offer prayers for Francisco, Jesus, their family and the Salvadoran Lutheran Church.

We are including the name of the Salvadoran Lutheran Bishop, a telephone number and an email address, in case you would like to establish direct communication.

Submitter:
Teresa M Barnhill, Student

Message: Good day knitters! Did you ever wish you could put your knitting skills towards a cause to better life for others? Well now you can! Alia Scheirman and I are looking to start a group here on campus, where we'd knit for charity, called Knitting Knerds (cute huh?)

We need people who would be interested in getting involved including students, faculty, staff, and anyone you think would like to help out!

We need at least 4 people to get the group started, but we'd like more. If you are interested in being involved, please send me an email at: barnhill@augsburg.edu

If we get enough people interested, we're planning on launching the group at the beginning of next semester! We hope you want to be a part of this amazing new project!

If you don't know how to knit but you are interested, GREAT!! We'd love to teach you and help you learn, so don't hesitate to get involved!

Thanks and keep knitting!!

Cheers!
